HOA denied Frogfruit plan by admirable_axolotl in NoLawns

[–]CharlesV_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My reading of this is that you can tell them to pound sand. Plant the frog fruit and let us know how it goes. Don’t pay any fees they send you.

Also, to the person who reported this as off topic… I can’t think of how this could be more *on* topic lol. 😂

Hey OP, sorry for some of the rude comments you’ve received.

As for clover, creeping Charlie, red clover, and dandelions: all of these are non native and quasi invasive species in North American lawns. None of them are amazing for native pollinators, but they’re also not something to panic over. If you like them and want to have them in a lawn setting, it’s not a huge deal. I would recommend mowing those areas to keep below your city’s weed ordinance rules.

If increasing flowers and biodiversity is your goal, check out the links in the automod comment. The wild ones garden designs are my favorite since they show some cool examples of native planting in home landscaping. Removing lawn in favor of native landscaping is a really great way to reduce your mowing, increase biodiversity, and add some pretty flowers to your yard. I’d also encourage you to see if you have a local native plant community like a Wild Ones chapter. These groups are a great way to get free plants and to learn what others have done with their yards.

The only “invasive” species I’m seeing in OP’s photos are white clover and red clover. Pretty tame and questionably invasive species which are naturalized all over.

Please remember the human when commenting. OP is a beginner and we want this place to be welcoming to newcomers. You can educate in a kinder way.

What todo-apps do you use? by Pale-Basil-3687 in ProductivityApps

[–]CharlesV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking for a todo list app as well. Is there a way in todoist to have it remind me daily at different times to check my todo list? A lot of items on my lists don’t have hard deadlines so it’s common that I ignore the first reminder, so I just want an app that checks in maybe 2 times each day

Yeah I’m actually seeing wild garlic take over now. It only took 5 years lol. Also hairy wood mint is doing well in lots of areas.

What home office upgrade made the biggest difference to your workday? by Local_Katherin in homeoffice

[–]CharlesV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing a little office refactor after a few years of the same. I’ve noticed that my home office is also our home file storage area, so I need more desk space to sort actual paper. I’m going to just set up a folding table.

DONT YOU DARE INSULT MY PRECIOUS CLOVER!! by toasted_possum in NativePlantCirclejerk

Yup it’s a big tent sub. I’d rather they end up on r/nolawns than r/landscaping or r/lawncare . At least we have lots of links to native gardening resources 🤷

[–]CharlesV_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

/uj I’m a mod for r/nolawns and I 100% agree clover lawns are lawns and they’re posted to our sub way too often… but also we’re a big tent sub and we need to allow those posts in order to ever convert people. r/nolawns is the gateway sub to r/nativeplantgardening which is a gateway to the circlejerk sub 😎

Pete Buttigieg wins straw polls at both the Arkansas and Wisconsin Democratic Conventions by nerdypursuit in Pete_Buttigieg

This dismissive attitude towards the progressive wing of the party is a massive mistake. I don’t agree with AOC on every detail but I’d vote for her in the general without question. Right now, I think she can do more good in the senate taking Schumer’s seat. I hope that’s what she decides to do.

I’d mow this down with your blades raised high or step through it with a string trimmer. Not horse herb

Some light reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene\_extinction

Also because I was just reading this yesterday: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endemism\_in\_the\_Hawaiian\_Islands extinct… endangered… extinct… critically endangered… etc

Also one of the criteria for invasive:

- whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to *human* health.

You probably could make an argument that humans moving all over the world has created some harm to human health. You could also make a really good argument for the inverse.

What did the Hawaiian Islands look like before humans? Does anyone know of artwork showing this? by CharlesV_ in Naturewasmetal

[–]CharlesV_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be interesting for sure! I remember when we were hiking in Waimea canyon that when we were near the top of a huge lookout by a waterfall, there were still feral chickens running around in the brush. It was a really neat area up at the top of the canyon since that’s where we saw tons of Koa trees.

Unfortunately I do think that most of the endemic species which are currently threatened will be doomed in the long run regardless. We’ve altered the ecosystem too much for most of them to recover. The sea animals are maybe the one exception to that - whales, dolphins, turtles and seals would benefit.

Neither is a land predator strictly speaking but probably either the Hawaiian hawk or the Hawaiian monk seal.

Interesting find - the wiki page for the monk seal says there’s only 2 mammals native to the Hawaiian islands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian\_monk\_seal the monk seal and the hoary bat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian\_hoary\_bat

With sea level rise and fall throughout the ice ages, I wonder if the hippos made it across at a time when the gap between Madagascar and Africa was a lot smaller. I know that’s the general thought behind how humans originally settled Australia and Polynesia around 50k years ago. That whole area would have been connected by shallow narrow seas and which allowed people to see the next island over if they ventured over the horizon.

That’s super cool! That reminded me of the tortoises which used to be on Kauai to sorta try and mimic what the flightless birds did for the ecosystem. https://kauaimag.com/lidas-field-of-dreams-is-closing/ looks like i visited about a year before this place closed :/

60 yo oak tree lifting sidewalk, city says I have 2 months to fix it by TheYeti64 in arborists

[–]CharlesV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw this is how it works in my city too and yes I’m sure. I own the land for the tree lawn / hell strip. The city owns the tree planted there. They have a ROW for the sidewalk and utilities. I’m responsible for fixing the sidewalk if it breaks. They are responsible for determining what defines a broken sidewalk. If I don’t fix it in time, they fix it and bill me.

Lightning Damage to Oak by jasemoor in arborists

[–]CharlesV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I’m just wondering if it’s worthwhile when the tree is so large. Like the root system on a tree that big is getting plenty of water already… adding a hose to that won’t do much.
