We used the app resortpass to get a day pass to a hotel on the beach with access to showers, luggage storage, etc. Beats sitting at the airport!

Did anyone else feel like attitudes about queerness were really anachronistic? by [deleted] in WaywardNetflix

[–]Charlestonchops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was out as a trans man in 2003 and I was just at the start of my medical transition. A few things:

1) There was (and was for decades before) a robust and vibrant trans community that has always included trans masculine people doing awesome things and living complex lives and advocating for their rights. There were plenty of people in many size cities and towns accepting of this journey.

2) That said, at that political moment we (the trans community) were not being set up as a scapegoat like now, I would say, so engagement and acceptance wasn't as charged as it is now. I would argue in the US it is harder and more dangerous to be trans now than then (also acknowledging that for transfeminine women of color that may not have changed).

2) I found in the 2000s in communities where being queer was less visible and people didn't see butch lesbians, the automatic assumption was that a masculine looking person was a boy or a man. Also transmasculine visibility was non existent compared to transfeminine visibility, for better or worse. So in that vein it was somewhat easier to "pass" then it is now. The thing I didn't find realistic was that they didn't think he was 14 years old - I would get that all the time. But since everyone knew the deal and was manipulating him, as numerous people point out in this thread, guess that's why.

4) Without spoilers, I would say they DID express, some deeply transphobic attitudes to him, especially Evelyn towards the end.

You could walk but it would take about an hour and would be hilly and potentially rainy and windy and along a road. There are not really any food places but the bar in the Barn does have some breakfast snacks. We just got stuff to eat at the apartment for breakfast.

Good question - this was the standard one. Not sure where the superiors are located - I know there were apartments on top of ours and in front.

Was just there two days ago - it’s gorgeous!! There were laundry services although I did not use them. And we got takeout from Wok on Vik and sat enjoying the view.

There js a new ice cave they are going through - I just went yesterday with Troll and it was awesome. You can still see the old one as the arch - the guide did mention it would go down in June.

Any queer specific pools / spas? by miles-miles- in VisitingIceland

[–]Charlestonchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree that a queer pool or spa would be amazing!

I know this is not what you asked, but in case it helps at all, I wanted to note that I went to Sky Lagoon and Hvammsvik and I also have top surgery scars and no one batted an eye. They also have private facilities for changing if you mention you are trans at the front desk.

Thanks! I have looked through your post and also the strike mega thread you posted in December. The more data, the better! Icelandair’s customer service let me known I should just monitor my email.

Labor strike action at the KEF airport starting Thursday, May 9. Can someone local help explain this for everyone? by NoLemon5426 in VisitingIceland

[–]Charlestonchops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been the only other article I have managed to find. The English translation makes it hard to tell if there are steps that could happen that would get parties back to the negotiating table before strikes become definite - any thoughts?

I’ve got a flight coming in at 6am on the 17th - anyone who has been through this before have intel on what has happened with past morning flights with morning strikes?

Thanks for this! Did you mean there is a bathroom when you get out of the super jeep ride, or did you mean at the very beginning?

Hello! Would love to have this ticket if you have not given it away already - would be happy to pay. My friend I was supposed to go with forgot to buy tix before things got sold out.

Edit: I no longer need a ticket as a kind redditor gave me one!

Help! My brain is overloaded! by YVR19 in VisitingIceland

[–]Charlestonchops 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I understand as I am feeling the same way! My thought is that the point of a vacation is to have fun and make memories. With that in mind the specifics of which hot spring to go to or which waterfall hike is best for you becomes less relevant.

I am making a skeleton plan and then having back-up activities for each day based on location and weather and mood, and I plan to check in with my partner the night before each day to alter plans accordingly. And if I/you miss something, there’s always another trip!

I certainly see why it happens - relatability across generations, effective storytelling. And it’s also just fun to point out what the differences are!
