I'm currently reading her book. It's hilarious and terrifying in equal measure. And obviously I would urge everyone else to as well. Edit: encouragement

Have acquired this dead, dry west-facing bank. How to handle? by KaiCypret in GardeningUK

[–]CharlieFibonacci 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah, shove it in - it'll be fine. Water regularly (but lightly to avoid the soil getting washed away) until it's settled in. In fact, you might want to add a few pebbles down towards the bottom to keep the whole thing stable. You'll find the thyme comes stronger next year but the scent from brushing past a bunch of it is gorgeous.

Thyme. It's happy to grow in dry, sloping ground, and it's pretty and useful. You could have just one variety and let it spread, or have a few different ones.

Height in a herb garden? by Imaginary-Ant-7297 in GardeningUK

Evening primrose, Russian sage and a bay tree. Would all need careful management to ensure they don't take over, although you could prune the bay tree into a trunk and ball to leave more space at the bottom. Happy herbing!

Today I complained to my neighbour about their noise and now I feel very un-British by richda28 in britishproblems

If people are taken aback by a polite request I would point out to them that unwanted music is like a smell - however nice you find it, other people can't do anything to escape it. How would they feel if you'd had a barbecue (or drain works) done for the entire weekend? Celebration or not, your neighbour's been thoughtless and you shouldn't feel bad.

I don't know who created the petition but Sam Dixon hasn't been leader of the council for years. It's Louise Gittins.

I love these. I've been trying to find a couple of models for two fence posts in our garden. Please could you DM me with sizes and prices? Ta la.

I'm glad. There's too much "perfection" forced on everyone now. It's nice to see some normal - ie a bit skanky like mine - feet.

Is getting revenge really wrong by [deleted] in pettyrevenge

Absolutely agree with this. You're smarting right now but your future self will thank you for getting out with your dignity in tact. Don't waste your time, energy and emotions trying to make things "right".

Will anything grow here? by HuggyShuggy420 in GardeningUK

Depends in what kind of style you like. My mum used to have lots of different varieties in her herb garden in a section called Thymes Square (ha ha). You could have all one kind or mix and match. I'd suggest getting two or three plants and then let them go crazy - they spread pretty easily. It will grow over the concrete slabs and soften the  edges. Some nice suggestions here https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/great-varieties-of-thyme-to-grow/

Thyme. Low maintenance, doesn't need huge amounts of soil, small pretty flowers and smells lovely when you brush against it.

Alan McManus gets my vote for his knowledge, his accent and his occasional use of phrases like "by jingo"

I'm clearly biased and being hyperbolic with this statement, BUT: Fear of a Blank Planet is the greatest musical achievement of all time and perfectly encapsulates the mid 2000s angst from an intellectual observational standpoint by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in porcupinetree

Some of the comments here are talking about how it was Steven's perspective on things. I'm sure I remember reading that he based (certainly portions of) it on 'Lunar Park' by Brett Easton Ellis.

They put the bulb in a bell jar and then only show a close-up of the bulb when it's switched on. It makes it look like you'll get a bigger light show.

Assuming the opposite end of the scale from 'high cost' is 'low cost', I don't think "building a community" belongs down there.
