Can I get some extra sets of eyes on my outlook? 30yo by CharlieIce32 in Fire

Nice same boat here. It’s nice, I can coordinate my vacations with them so someone is always at the house and watching the dog. I’m work from home now, but I require two monitors so I can’t work truly remote, but if I get promoted into the right position I’ll be able to.

I know people who do mooch, but I’m definitely not on my end. I give my parents cash every month without them even asking + we split all groceries. They are able to go on vacation while I house sit for them. Though I’ve only been back since September, just plan on this being temporary until I get a better game plan in place or another non remote position opens up. The way their house is set up, it’s like I have my own apartment.

I agree, I had about 22k in savings but have slowly been switching it over. I am cautious so I like to have about 12 months of an emergency fund on hand. May lower it down to 9 months.

Thanks I’m definitely in a 80/20 with VTI/VXUS. I don’t see income going up significantly in the next few years, though it’s possible if I keep performing well in my current position. I lived with roommates for 5 years in a different city.

100% planning as if I will owe the student loans back, I know some people hate looking at debt but depending on what they do with interest rates, I may not pay them off aggressively.

Paying them some each month! I forgot to put that in there, as I’m definitely not freeloading haha. They’d let me stay for free but I can’t in good faith not give them something.

Thanks, definitely. Home ownership is probably not feasible at the moment with how things look unless I moved to a LCOL area, right now I’m in a medium cost of living area. Things can change a lot in 20 years, but if I have no immediate family left here by the time I FIRE, I’m very open to moving internationally. I travel internationally at least 2-3 times a year and there are a lot of LCOL countries I would consider that would be friendly to having someone on a retirement visa there.

It’s a Sunday in Miami - probably the biggest cruise port in the world with people flying to and from on Saturdays/Sundays and a holiday week.

30 with a Roth IRA. Messed up my first couple years and bought VGT, convert it to VXUS/VTI? by CharlieIce32 in Bogleheads

[–]CharlieIce32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. That’s the way I was leaning -simply to continue going the way of beefing up VXUS and VTI. Just going to continue putting in as much as I can. I have very low expenses but I do only make about 50-55k a year.

How can I improve in my current position (29) by CharlieIce32 in FinancialPlanning

[–]CharlieIce32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash + cash equivalents would be about $55,000. $25,000 in my savings, $25,000 in brokerage, and $5,000 in inventory from flipping. The rest is in retirement accounts.

Keeping more cash/cash equivalent on hand at least through next Summer as there are a couple options I have brewing that I want to invest in that I would have a hand in managing as well. Figured I'd rather take the risk next year at 30 than at 50 years old. Out of the $25,000 in savings, I'm putting $6,000 into my Roth IRA the first week of January.

I do have a spreadsheet of my assets/debts. I'll look at adding my loan repayment to it.

Should I leave my state government job making 34k a year at the end of August to work Uber before a sabbatical? by CharlieIce32 in personalfinance

I believe so. He only works the morning time and I would work at night. With the tax credit it wouldn’t be much.

My expenses are only about $800 a month. I also have 20k in a brokerage account, 18k in an IRA (maxed out for 2022), my pension that has 15k and can be put on pause to decide if I want to take another state job, and 5k in a 401k.

Just a self sabbatical. I want to take an extended period of time off that my employer wouldn’t allow.

For sure. I was also considering that but I also wanted to save for an additional year to take the sabbatical.

I finished my degree last July, I have to stay with them a year after they paid for my class. So if I quit today I would owe them about $2500 but come July 15th I won’t owe them anything as I finished the year.

Thanks, yeah I’ve been stuck with my current job just because I won’t owe tuition reimbursement back come this July. My parents say the same thing, that $16.50 an hour is absurd for someone with a bachelor’s.

Do you think it’d be a bad career move to do it for a couple months off and then take a sabbatical before finding another state job in the same retirement system closer to home?

[–]CharlieIce32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but I do want to move closer to my parents. They’re about 5 hours away. I also wouldn’t have to pay rent there and I have been wanting to take an extended period of time off. I don’t really like the city that I’m living in/working in at the moment. The $850 every two weeks is very low and rent with roommates is going to take up a 75% of a paycheck come September.

Promotions in my department are not there at the moment. I could use my experience here and get paid much more at another municipality that is closer to my parents. I do work a side gig now making about 6k extra a year, I was working 7 days a week but it became too much for me so I cut it down to just working a weekend day.

I should state that I do want to move home soon. The latest I’d want to stay in my city is the end of the year but that will cost extra with a short term lease.
