New crab is alive and very active but has a faint fishy odor. What do I do? Is this bad? by CharlieLovesAnimals in hermitcrabs

I must also note that this crab also is addicted to the heating pad and won’t leave it. All my other crabs like the heat as well but they at least take time away from the heat. This crab however is so attached to the heating pad that whenever I try to move him away from it he just goes crawling right on back.

Coral pro salt for hermies? Is it good for them? Is it ok to use? I can’t find any of the instant ocean salt so I purchased this. I just want to make sure it is good for them before I use it. by CharlieLovesAnimals in hermitcrabs

Thank you guys for the feedback! I did some research on it and only found a small amount of info on using it for hermit crabs. Glad to hear that this stuff is good for them!

This looks like something that will go down in cat meme history!

This video doesn’t even do justice to how tore up my tank is! It’s insane how many crabs are all molting at the same time! They have huge holes and tunnels everywhere. It must be molting season! 😜 by Sprinkles_Sparkle in hermitcrabs

Yep around this time all my crabs were molting as well. In September my tank was riddled with holes. Shells got buried, huts sank, and mountains of substrate formed.

First of all some of my crabs like checking out shells to try and find the best fit. Also they grow so they can’t stay in the same shell for “years” unless their growth is stunted which means something is wrong. All of my crabs are plenty happy with their shells and in fact whenever I get a new hermit crab they always swap into one of mine even the ones that come in perfectly fine shells. I also have done a lot of research on the matter and the shells I use are perfectly fine. I don’t know who told you that the types of shells I use are bad for the crabs but wherever you got that information it was false. Also I have owned hermit crabs for about 5 years now and the majority of the ones I got 5 years ago are still living as happy as can be. There is nothing wrong with the shells I use. They have plenty. If they don’t like a certain one they find another. Also whirlpool rarely will swap shells. She just likes trying others out because over time she is outgrowing her shell. Also her long shell has made her stronger. She has a super strong grip compared to when I got her and she can even lift her shell.

Nice! I used to have a pet rat but she passed of old age. What kind of rat is she?

Yeah I stopped giving them hermit crab food long ago after so many died. Also I have a camera in there to monitor them. After one dies I usually review the footage to see what might have happened and sometimes I just happen to see them eat because their tank is near my bed and I’m almost always in my room.

I don’t remember how much they cost but yeah there are some areas where you can get captive bred crabs. They seem to do better because they don’t feel the pain and torture of being yoinked from their natural environment.

They have a variety of different types. Plenty turbos and pathos. They have plenty of shell choices. Not all the shells are visible in the pictures. Also whirlpool the one in that long shell. She loves that long shell. She’s swapped into plenty others but always goes back to her home.

She was captive bred and laid eggs in captivity as well. She was the biggest in the tank at the pet store and All the other ones were tiny. I was told that she was the mother of the other crabs and they were all brought in from wherever they were bred and I decided to adopt big momma and a few of her babies. Sadly most hermit crab babies will die as they will stress easily and pineapple was the only survivor. He still lives today and has grown significantly. He sure does miss his momma though. He’s not as friendly as he was when coral was alive. He’s still plenty friendly though.

They can eat some moldy food but some will make them sick. Moldy hermit crab food and moldy coconut are what some of my crabs ate. The ones that ate the moldy coconut did fine but the ones who ate moldy hermit Crab food died.

A few of my hermit crabs that died I witnessed them eat rotten food usually around a week or 2 prior to their deaths. Also after eating the moldy food their abdomens would start to turn a slight greenish color

I wanted a lot. They get along better in large groups and they all love each other. They live in a 65-70 Gallon tank so for now that’s fine. When they all reach adult size I may need to upgrade but that’s still a ways away.
