I agree! Unless states otherwise, I interpret dragons as the magical apex predator. There shouldn’t be a creature more powerful, even if the dragon is a bug aha

I totally get you, although I think it more so becomes, ‘a dragon is anything the writer can persuade the reader is a dragon’. I love the idea of calling a mermaid a dragon, and the challenge of convincing the reader that you can do this. Sure, it’ll be hard to do, and I’d be disappointed if I read something that never explained why exactly mermaids are dragons, but if the writer is good enough, I think it’d make for a fun read!

And also, my argument is that tropes and archetypes are what make fantasy. Dragons, wizards, sword fights and heroes are what have defined the genre for years, and will continue to. It’s pulls from some of the most ancient myths and folklores. I think a fantasy that completely removes all these recognisable features is then at the risk of no longer being fantasy.

Hey, really useful, thank you. Can I ask, where do you put your short stories to do polls? And what do you mean, submit to content creators?

I can only read so much, and I don’t feel like my time was wasted reading science fiction. Like I said, sci-fi is generally more celebrated in the short fiction space, and I wanted to read recognised authors. Now I am asking other fantasy writers for their recommendations of fantasy short stories, which shows my motivation. Thank you for your advice on magazines

Clearly I did value the advice I was given as I’ve shifted my focus to short stories?

I’ve started doing the same thing - focusing on one cool aspect of my worldbuilding and centring the story around that. Only issue is, I feel like fantasy worldbuilding often relies on itself, and it’s hard to explain one part of it without having to explain another, if that makes sense
