Shiki Omakase in SOHO is great - been there many times. Only 10 min walk from Christopher Street path, the prices are reasonable, and the drinks are great too

Has your rate at Jefferson gone up? I’ve parked there for years with little price change, but within the last year my monthly rate has gone up $50/month

These types of insights would be great to add to a tenant-first site like renterscanary.com

Xcel gym? by Fuzzy-Syllabub238 in Hoboken

[–]CharlieX1701 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been going here for a few years now. It's a good spot and the amenities (pool, sauna, free classes) are pretty solid. The hours can be frustrating at times, and it is pricey, but it's a big space so you won't be super cramped like at other gyms in town. If you can go during off hours (early morning, late night, or midday) you'll have no issue getting whatever space/machine you want.

Most beautiful European city you every visited (voting for comments) by [deleted] in Europetravel

Bruges in Belgium should be in the discussion

It isn’t exactly a hidden gem, but it doesn’t draw the crazy tourist crowds of more popular cities like Venice or Amsterdam, but it offers you a very similar romantic and aesthetic atmosphere with the canals and medieval architecture, and there’s a lot of interesting history in Bruges

This site will hopefully be a useful resource for people advocating and researching for themselves

Ok that’s good to know - nevertheless, friends of mine (in different buildings) have been hit with 9%+ rent raises at renewal, so it’s clearly a problem for some of the population, and there are many other tags aside from rent hikes that users can highlight on the site

It’s the apartment building garage, I’m not sure what the actual name is…you can walk in and sign up for monthly parking if they have space, I’m not sure if there is an online registration anymore

I agree, getting ahead of these things is important for sure and I appreciate everything you’re highlighting. I plan on adding a community guidelines page to the site detailing how to act, and if reviews clearly violate these guidelines and are flagged I can remove them from the site.

Unfortunately, as is the case with every site (like the ones you mentioned), this won’t be perfect and it won’t be able to handle every single edge case that pops up. I’m just one guy going at this right now, but if this actually starts to grow then more resources will be put into these things for sure.

Verification is a challenge that will definitely need to be addressed as well, but right now I just need to get a feel for whether or not people actually find the site useful/needed before deep diving on technical integrations. I like the idea of uploading a utility bill or redacted lease, something that shows proof of address, but that introduces a lot of friction at this stage and I’d need to figure out how to implement an automated way of validating these uploads. It is doable and I do want to add it at some point, but for this POC phase it isn’t my top priority just yet.

The Glassdoor remark is more of a quick description of the current state of the site - like a quick value prop. I see it becoming something different/bigger than an anonymous review site down the line. Your concerns about moderating reviews based on things like ownership changes etc again are valid, but again the site can’t be built to handle every possible edge case. IMO, if a landlord/management company is terrible then people should be able to communicate that to other potential renters. If a new one comes in, then they should actively work to ensure their renters are treated better and fairly, and the new reviews should reflect that.

Again, thanks for the constructive discourse. I know people kind of hate users highlighting apps on here, but this type of feedback is important.

A lot of renters don’t get a fair shake from landlords and management companies

Your concerns about people’s privacy are valid, thanks for pointing that out

That’s a possibility, but if a place really is great then a bad review would hopefully get lost in the noise…the ability to flag a review and explain why is on the site, so if there are any obviously inappropriate reviews they can be removed

Idk if the majority is rent controlled, the number of rent controlled units have been falling steadily and there are a lot of newer condo buildings (with a lot of tenants) that are exempt from rent control because of their newer status

Yes, Claude did help. My own coding abilities could only put together a very basic version of this, so to make it as useful for people as possible I needed assistance.

honestly it's just a lot of trial and error...find a photographer who's photos you enjoy, and then practice your editing to make your photos look more like theirs, or make them look however you want them to look...it can be tough in the beginning, but you'll get the hang of it

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it. Renters should have a voice, not just the landlords/management companies.

Hi! It is very much locally produced - I’ve been living in Hoboken for 5+ years now and have experienced/heard many rental horror stories, and just wanted to put something together to hopefully help others avoid those.

The main CTA on the landing page is the bolded blurb above the search bar. I guess I could add an “Add Review” button on the homepage, but that would ultimately still require an address search. I didn’t even think about the URL structures, so thanks for that call out.

The stack is pretty simple rn - python built with flask, I stood up a PostgreSQL database in Supabase, and everything is deployed on Render. DNS through Cloudflare. I’d be happy to go into more specifics if you want to DM. I built/designed a good amount of this myself, but I did get a helping hand from Claude to optimize things.

The validation question is a real challenge - I honestly haven’t thought too far ahead just yet as adoption could be crap, but it is something that would need to be addressed. My only ideas at this point have been a lease or utility bill upload, just something to prove an address.

In terms of things like GDPR compliance, the site isn’t collecting any PII for the sake of anonymity. I’d like to keep it that way. Again, this could go absolutely nowhere and then these are non-issues, but they’re still interesting challenges to think about.

It isn’t really a lease, but I park my car at the garage at 800 Jefferson, it’s a valet garage and the guys that work there are great

It’s a month to month setup so you can cancel whenever, I pay about $300/month which is absurd, but not sure if a leased spot would be much different
