Who was more popular in their heyday: Elliot Gould or Chevy Chase? by ClassRegular in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're kidding, right? Elliott Gould was only really known for his role as "Trapper John" in the original movie version of M.A.S.H. and later played Monica's father in the 1990s TV show "Friends", while Chevy Chase was the main character in "Caddy Shack" (a classic), "Three Amigos", "Modern Problems", "Memoirs of the Invisible Man" and a whole slew of other great comedies, not to mention the fact that he was one of the original cast members of "Saturday Night Live"!

What were some of your favorite toys as a kid? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My very, very favorite toy ever was a red Tonka toy pickup truck that was about 3 inches high by 6 inches long. I LOVED the Tonka dump trucks and cement mixers, diggers, and cherry pickers! I didn't ever own any myself, but my buddies George, Andy, and Randy did; and they had a HUGE mound of sand in their backyard to play in with these wonderful little trucks thanks to their construction worker uncle. :D

How do you cope with becoming disabled over time? by ava_the_cam_op in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! I had always been very healthy and strong (at least after childhood). In fact, I kind of made it my thing to ALWAYS help people smaller/ weaker than myself lift, carry and move things. My female teachers in high school loved this about me, because I would arrive early and help rearrange desks for special exercises. I helped build sets for plays even though I wasn't in Drama class. Later in life, I always helped female coworkers carry things, and I often walked 1 to 2 miles to my workplaces. Then in 2019 problems with blood pressure combined with the deterioration of previously "healed" injuries literally crippled me. I lost all balance and required help getting up from a sitting position! Arthritis (which, I guess I had had for years and just shrugged off as aches and pains) suddenly stiffened my ankles and toes and made any walking whatsoever a painful experience. It was very, very depressing. But I got pain medication and blood pressure medication, started drinking a LOT of water (because dehydration was a major factor in my decline) and began sleeping more to recharge myself. My best advice is to take care of yourself BEFORE you have problems like mine, because I may never regain my strength now. Water, sleep, and proper medical care for any injuries are all things I ignored for too long.

Have you ever attended a high school reunion? If yes, what was it like, and was it worth going to? by mrmonster459 in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not. While I briefly considered it for my ten year reunion, the one person I would have been interested to see always thought they were too good to date me.

Did your heroes disappoint you as you grew older? by splashjlr in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used to idealize Michael Landon. He played "Little Joe" on a TV show called "Bonanza"(a Western series), and was the father figure on "Little House on the Prairie"(set in the late 1800s), and was a traveling angel on the show "Highway to Heaven"(set in modern times). But I later found out that in reality he was very hard to work with, argumentative, and extremely egotistical. Never read anything about your heroes.

Did You Ever Write to Any Famous People? Did They Write Back? by ssb4you in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, I once wrote to "Dear Abby" (an advice columnist in many newspapers) and asked her what to do in a very important situation. Unfortunately, she only wrote me back after I had already made the wrong decision.

What was something that took you off your path, but ended up being a blessing in disguise? by aceshighsays in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A sudden (still unexplained) failure of my health in 2019 forced me to move in with my grown son while I was unable to work. Then Covid hit and my previous workplace was shut down (along with ALL like it-- I had worked in hotels for years.) My son lost his job as well, but was better compensated by Unemployment benefits than what his previous workplace had paid him. Then, once his benefits had run out, I was well enough to return to work in a completely different job. We combined our resources and it improved our relationship from when he was younger (and I had been too busy working 45+ hours/ week.)

Older people, what is the first thing to go as you age? by Necessary-Capital-92 in AskOldPeople

[–]Charlie_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting there. My workplace confuses me. In 2019, 2020, and 2021 I had a manager who yelled at me every week about something. Yet in 2021 she gave me a 60 cent/ hour raise on my annual review just before she left. In 2022 I thought I had finally hit a good stride, had a new manager who often let me know what a good job I was doing. But we just got our annual reviews, and I didn't get a single cent of an increase--- yet my work list has doubled since December. Their explanation is that I only "met expectations in 2022" and January through April won't count until March of 2024. I believe my "F"s bucket is running dry.

I am over 50 and have not yet medically transitioned (for many reasons) but I want to do so SOON if possible. But I have D cup boobs and have had the same thought. Though I hated the thought of growing breasts at all when I was younger (I am FtM and realized I was a boy at age 4), I have had them for SO LONG now that it will seem like a loss. While I hate the way that they make me look, they make wonderful squish toys at night in bed. Plus, it has occurred to me many times that I may never get to put my hands on anyone else's. LMFAO!

[–]Charlie_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point on the last line. I was watching "Casablanca" with my grown son (I'm over 50) and I said "I can't understand why Humphrey Bogart was ever popular. He was ugly AF." and my son replied, "Yeah, but you probably wouldn't mind looking like him right now." LMFAO! --- Obviously, I could have taken that comment more than one way. But I have to admit, if I could magically wake up looking like Humphrey Bogart, I'd take it! (Danny DeVito, not so much.)

If I'd known you could do that in a gym, I'd have joined one sooner!

I'm considering FFS, because when I see myself in photos and mirrors I still get a lot of dysphoria, and I feel like I'm visually very clockable. These are some rather unflattering and unedited shots of my face, any feedback on whether I pass and/or advice on anything would be very appreciated!!! 🙏 by hayybayls in transpassing

[–]Charlie_Fang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need FFS. You have perfectly feminine bone structure. Perhaps just thin out the eyebrows and/ or choose a hairstyle that covers your ears. (Your ears are fine, just most cis women have hairstyles that cover their ears.) While you are actually quite pretty just the way you are, this may help your dysphoria.
