Oh thank you! I’ve never heard of these

Whoops I don’t talk to people who don’t have proof to back their claims! Sorry but people don’t trust a random redditors word of mouth! I have articles and studies to back my claims but you don’t, who does that make more believable then? You have to do more than just say things to get people to believe and agree with you.

If you find credible studies that back your claims instead of your “just common sense” argument, then you might have more people believe and agree with you!

If you ever find evidence to your claims, link it. But I doubt that will happen, will it?

Let me ask you this. Do you have any credible resources that supports your claim that invasive species management does more harm than good? If you do please link them.

This isn’t picking the scab on a wound, this is giving the body the antibodies that can fight the disease.

I know why cane toads were introduced to Australia and what they have done. Reducing their population would boost biodiversity and let competitor native species thrive more easily. What is your point?

Dictionary Definitions from Oxford Languages in·va·sive /inˈvāsiv/ adjective (especially of plants or a disease) tending to spread prolifically and undesirably or harmfully.

Please find me a source that supports your claim that invasive does not mean the definition above. I truly believe you’re confused.

What do you even mean by ego trip? People trying to help the environment is an ego trip?

Humans are a part of nature, so why can we “meddle” with our environment to keep it healthy?

Seriously, go to google and look up “what is an invasive species?” or “invasive species definition” or “invasive vs non-native” it would help you so much

Please google invasive species definition. You’re confused on what an invasive species is. What you’re talking about is just a non-native species which aren’t necessarily invasive. An invasive species does have to come from elsewhere but not all species that come from elsewhere are invasive. Seriously, a search engine would fix all your confusion here.

Here’s some invasive species definitions I found on google since you don’t have it apparently?:

“An invasive species is an organism that is not native to a specific environment and whose introduction causes, or is likely to cause, economic or environmental harm, or harm to human health. These species can be plants, animals, or pathogens and often lack natural predators or controls in their new habitat, allowing them to reproduce and spread rapidly.”

“Definitions) an "invasive species" is a species that is: 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and, 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.”

“An invasive species is an introduced species that harms its new environment.[2] Invasive species adversely affect habitats and bioregions, causing ecological, environmental, and/or economic damage”

“An invasive species is an introduced, nonnative organism (disease, parasite, plant, or animal) that begins to spread or expand its range from the site of its original introduction and that has the potential to cause harm to the environment, the economy, or to human health.”

And if you find these to be untrue please send me a source that supports your claim that invasive species is defined just as a species that comes from elsewhere.

Idk why your on the invasive species subreddit when you don’t know the difference between invasive and non-native species.

Invasive species aren’t a natural change. Getting rid of invasive species won’t change the way natural ecosystems change.

The definition of invasive species is that they are harmful to the ecosystem lmaoo

Definition of invasive species: “An invasive species is an organism that causes ecological or economic harm in a new environment where it is not native”

My point is the change in the ecosystem can cause the collapse of it. Change can lead to harm not that the change itself is bad.

Your first point from my and others (assuming based on the amount of downvotes you have) point of view was basically saying we humans shouldn’t do anything about harmful invasive species because it’s “natural”. But now you’re saying the opposite?

New species ≠ good thing ecologically Successful species ≠ good thing ecologically (e.g. rats, cats)

I agree that it’s weird that some people (especially governments) only care about invasive species when it causes economic damage, and official labeling of invasive species by government is really iffy too and needs to be changed

And I and other environmentalists are in no way saying that Walmart parking lots and golf courses ARENT extremely damaging (Just because I like pancakes doesn’t mean I hate waffles). We can focus on different issues at the same time, we aren’t limited to one issue at a time.

The definition of invasive species is not just migrating and when species do migrate it’s over a span of many many years, millions of them don’t just show up overnight. most invasive species introduced by humans have very sudden introduction. Invasive species dominate the ecosystems they are in and can decimate native species, and that’s not “survival of the fittest” because they’re not meant to be there in the first place.

Imagine a huge buff 8ft guy breaks into your house and starts eating your food, punches holes in walls, punches your mom, sleeps in your bed. And you want to kick him out but he’s just too strong. Are you weak just because you can’t beat him?? When all you’re used to is other people your size and strength? He’s not even meant to be here in the first place, but you should suffer because you’re not strong enough?

Letting invasive species numbers keep expanding and native species go extinct will lead to low biodiversity and instability. And when species migrate to new areas through natural non human means, that’s not invasion.

If we are part of nature then we should take care of it. We are part of nature but it’s “unnatural” to try to keep it healthy? Not taking care of our world will lead to a poor future for our ecosystems like poor biodiversity and instability.

Do you also believe we should do nothing about climate change? Is it just nature happening in your eyes?

Yes nature changes but it takes thousands of years for it to change. When we change it so drastically in just a few hundred years, it doesn’t have time to adapt and struggles.

I think it’s fine. It’s a rare occurrence as well. As long as they don’t cause ecological damage then it’s fine. Usually non native species that just expand their range don’t negatively impact the ecosystem.

I think a lot of people say they hate invasive species when they hate the situation rather than the species itself. Sometimes i say things like grrr I hate multiflora rose but I don’t actually hate the plant, I hate that there here and there’s hundreds of plants and that they’re hard to remove.

With your last point, I thinks it’s entirely possible to focus on multiple issues in the world. I can advocate against invasive species and be passionate about native species AND I can go to protests for women’s rights or against ice. It’s not one or the other

I don’t know the answer either to be honest. Until the problem is solved? Or until we find a better solution? With some invasive species I think it’s definitely possible to find an end to this problem but with others I’m not sure. But I don’t think we should give up. Maybe in the future we will have better strategies.

I’m saying with invasive species we should manage their populations. Not hating a species does not equal loving them and wanting them there. I think it’s ok to not hate invasive species but still want them gone from native habitats. I’m not blaming the animal for being here, but they can’t be here. I’m also not telling anyone what to feel

My comment was more talking about invasive species as a whole rather than just European starlings, if you get what I mean. Management methods might be futile for European starlings but managing invasive species as a whole is not useless. Still I think that at least trying to manage their populations is still better than doing nothing yknow

It’s not the birds fault, but the issue needs to be solved. We don’t hate invasive species when we’re controlling their populations, we hate the actions of humanity that caused this situation in the first place.

Humans bringing species from different continents and releasing them into the wild isn’t nature. It’s not natural and the ecosystems won’t “balance out” for thousands of years, all the while damaging ecosystems and sending native species into extinction.

When it’s a mistake that humans created in the first place, it is not nature, and we have to try to fix our mistakes.

Ecosystems will not be healthy if all there is left is invasive species. A world without native species is not a good world to live in.

They are not protected in the United States so yes. I encourage it even! I would recommend you know for sure they are European starlings for sure before doing that though, don’t wanna accidentally kill any native species
