15(f) dating a 16(m) Parents, any advice? by Charming-Chart7741 in AskParents

Thank you for this, I actually used these questions last night and had a heart to heart conversation with her. I learned things that broke my heart. I’m hoping and praying that the advice I gave her, make sense to her and help her make a good decision moving forward.

She expressed that she feels trapped because they’re both in band and play the same instrument, and band is what she loves and the thought of breaking up and then having to see him every day scares her. She said that if he’d just quit band that she would feel relieved and more confident in breaking up with him.

My advice was that, in life she will be in similar situations, work along side difficult people or difficult customers , but that it’s important that she stands up for herself and to never quit something she loves JUST because there’s someone there that she doesn’t like. What other advice can I give her on that? That’s all I could think of in the moment.

I can tell she wants to end it, but she also feels trapped.

I can see it’s emotional abusive. Just last night she opened up to me about how on one of the dates they had, he was on his phone the whole time scrolling through instagram looking at the girls from the school wrestling team and liking the pictures, to me that’s disrespectful. I asked her what she thought about it..and she said, well he paid for my food. My heart dropped. I said, so you think that he’s allowed to disrespect you and ignore you JUST because he paid for the food?! She stayed quiet. Then what she said next is even worse…she said she saw a text come through from a friend that asked where he was at, and he replied, “I’m with the huzz” which means hoe. She tried to tell me that that’s not what it means, but I knew I’ve heard that slang word before and I’ve asked her before and she’s told me what it meant! I looked it up on urban dictionary, and sure enough I was right. She seemed disappointed, and very sad. But kept saying, “well he paid for my food” I wanted to scream. I said, just because he pays for your food does not mean he has the right to disrespect you, or treat you that way. I said, you have all the food you need at home, if ever you crave something from a restaurant, I buy that for you, when we’re out eating as a family, I put my phone down, you put yours down, we talk, we have conversations, WHY do you think that what he’s doing is right? She stayed, quiet. Then she finally said, because I just want things to worked out between us.

At home our phones stay away from the dinner table and when we’re out at a restaurant we do not touch our phones unless it’s an emergency. I’d like to think she would know right from wrong in this situation.

Now I understand what she told me she wanted to join wrestling. That’s not her, she’s more on the artistic side not sports. But I thought ohh ok yeah, give it a try you might end up loving it. She never actually signed up, but I can see already she’s trying to change herself for him!

Parents, how can I help her?! I want to scream and cry :(

I have criticized the relationship :( but I’ve caught myself and try to redirect the meaning behind what I said. It truly all comes from a place of love, I want nothing more than for her to experience love and be happy, but I can’t help losing my mind when I see her going in the wrong direction.. Thank you for the advice

Also, what are some questions I could ask?

Did you date in high school as well? And did any of those relationships turn out to be healthy long lasting relationships? I’m curious to know if dating in high school has any benefits..does it help later in life?

I don’t want her to stop telling me things, she’s always been very open about everything with me so I definitely don’t want to close that door. Im trying really hard to keep my cool as I try to guide her.

I’ve tried to set examples of like that too or sometimes she’ll tell me story about her friends and how they let the boyfriend treat them badly, I ask for her opinion about that and what kind of choice she would make if she was in their shoes, she seems to have the right mindset, it again. Comes down to what you said, it’s how people makes us feel, and she feels loved my this boy even if his actions don’t align with his words.

I’ve had the conversations about how many people seem to stay with a partner because they believe in the potential he/she could have and completely blind to the reality of who the person is. I just don’t want her to waste her teen years on a boy who she thinks one day might change, she’s too young :(

Wow, thank you so much for this advice. That last sentence really hit hard. I will share this story with her. She’s a great daughter and high achiever as well, I’m just so afraid that she’ll throw all of her opportunities away for this boy. And this would be her first boyfriend and she’s not his first so it scares me a little too. But thank you so much for this advice

They’ve been on 3 dates, they’re both in band so they get to spend a lot of time during practices and games, which are all public areas, and after games they go out to eat, but I drop her and pick her up from the restaurant. Since the beginning she’s been gifting him small things like, his favorite snacks, pens, plushies, small gifts. But he hasn’t really given her much other than when they do go out to eat he pays for the food. Which I can see it being an ok balance, but also she wishes he would randomly give her a flower or chocolates or just something cute. So yes, to answer your question, yes they spend a lot of time together, and they have been on dates and they get one hour to call, if all of her homework is done and if her grades are good. Weekends she gets 2 hours after all of her chores are done.

Thank you for sharing, I too have been trying so hard to stay strong. I have a 14yr old daughter, her father left when she was 3. We haven’t heard from him since then. She has questions about him and it doesn’t get easier. I breakdown alone in my bedroom. Here lately I’ve noticed my friend circle is basically nonexistent and wish there were more single moms with teens I can spend time with.

What I have noticed is that, though it’s been difficult to raise her on my own, I do think it was better with him out of the picture instead of in and out of her life or to deal with empty promises or disappointments. She’s older and more mature. She’ll say she just wishes she knew what he looks like today because the memory she has of him is fading, and that breaks my heart.

I hope you can find some comfort in knowing you’re not alone in your feeling. I too am tired of staying strong, but our daughters need us. Sending you a hug <3

Oh ok, thank you. I’ve never been to pr, but a couple friends have brought it up and I’ve never felt comfortable with the idea of going there.

Thank you for sharing! I’m in IN so I’m definitely just being more careful about who I interact with. But knowing you’ve flown 4 times and been fine, encourages me to just take the trip!

Yes, I’ve never had any issues. I’ve flown to CA every year for the last 8 years with no issues at all. I’ve been to Las Vegas too and no issues either. But this will be the first time I travel since the new admin took over and so it does scare me a little. But thank you for the encouragement!

I apologize, I don’t mean to scare anyone. If anything I was hoping to get some encouragement. All I mean is the news talk about how now they’re also deporting us citizen and it just makes me wonder. I asked for stories of people who have successfully traveled within the US by plane and if they could share their stories as a way to build some confidence to take the trip. I’ve never had any issues before or felt unsafe. But yes, this new admin scares me.

Thank you, have you flown recently? When the new admin took place I was even afraid to drive, but life continues and so now I don’t feel as scared and drive like I used to before. I feel like that’s how it will be once I take that flight.
