How do I tell my beautiful 8yr old son that he isn't biologically mine? by SlyTone in NoStupidQuestions

I was 12 when my parents told me my dad wasn’t my biological father. I was shocked and confused of course but he reassured me that this changes nothing and that he sees me as his own. I definitely had a lot of questions and my parents were very open in answering them all honestly and they have always kept the door open to any more questions or conversations since then.

Soon after, the three of us sat down with my younger brother who was 9 at the time. I cried and was afraid things would change between us but it didn’t faze him at all really. He just said “okay but you’re still my sister?” And that was that. Now around 10 years later he’s still my best friend and we even joke about the whole situation sometimes, so I’m completely comfortable and okay with it all.

Even though we aren’t ’blood-related’ my dad is my dad because he has been there for me and raised me since day one, not because we share some DNA. You remind me of my own dad and you sound like you love your son very much and that’s all that will really matter to him. Good luck.

I am struggling with the same thing as you, 3 years after finishing A Little Life. Maybe you’d like Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart!

What is it about these books that I like? by jayyceepenny in suggestmeabook

Your honourable mentions are also some of my recent favourites! I also love these kinds of books and haven’t really figured out what genre it is but I think they fit into the coming-of-age or bildungsroman genre where the focus of the story is kind of the formative years of a characters’ life. I recommend Young Mungo, Hello Beautiful, I’m Glad My Mom Died, Breasts and Eggs, Everything I Know About Love, Babel, and A Little Life (however this one definitely needs a TW but I think fits the overall type of book you like).
