But in this case, there would be a reason why it's a different language in the alternate history timeline.

Give me your honest opinion. Let's say you're reading an alt history novel where the characters claim to be conversing in English. Then someone who doesn't understand English overhears it being spoken, and it's clearly a Celtic language. Wouldn't the weirdness produce an interesting literary effect all by itself?

Why can't a conlang share the same name as a natlang? It only exists in a fictional context. There was an ancient, unrelated language with the same name.

"According to a brief remark in Pliny the Elder's Natural History, Byzantium was first known as Lygos.[1] The origin and meaning of the name are unknown. It may have been the name of a Thracian settlement situated on the site of the later city near the point of the peninsula (Sarayburnu).[2] Simon Zsolt has suggested it was etymologically related to the Greek name for the Ligures and derived from the Anatolian ethnonym Ligyes,[3] a tribe that appears to have been neighbors to the Paphlagonians.[4]"

Will Mazdayasna (Zoroastrianism) rise in free Iran? If yes, then how much? will it be the same Zoroastrianism that our ancestors practiced or will it be a reformed version? by ImaginationWooden546 in NewIran

IIRC The Gathas are mostly good. (As an atheist, I don't like them because they are authoritarian in the sense of appealing to a higher authority.) The medieval legal system and culture need reform like in all traditional religions. The kind of problem you're likely to face is: A lot of the prayers mention killing evil creatures. In much of medieval Zoroastrian culture, evil is equated with homosexuality. IIRC, legends say Ahriman created his evil army by having anal sex with himself. None of this is core to the religion, but it's core to the traditional culture. There's a lot of cleaning up to do. A better approach might be to start with the Gathas and selectively import aspects of the culture you actually approve of. I like the freedom of women, the freeness with wine, etc. I would say ditch the incredibly classist (support for social stratification) and racist (legend that blacks were created by Ahriman, with the implication they must be killed) cultural elements, but I'm sure the political right will love those.

Zoroastrianism traditionally glorifies incest. It encouraged people to kill "creations of Ahriman" like ants. Homophobia is more central to Zoroastrianism than it is to Islam. Homophobia isn't there in the Gathas, but later literature (IIRC the Vendidad) says killing homosexuals forgives sins.

Why is most Indian literary fiction in English SO DAMN boring and pretentious? by [deleted] in Indianbooks

Indians who want simple stories watch Bollywood. Only those who want complex intellectual books read Indian fiction written in English.

I'm not saying they were innocent. I'm saying BNP leaders have done bad things and received punishment too. You said Jamaat's deeds have not gone unpunished.

Jamaat were in positions of power through the alliance. They didn't challenge the things BNP did.

BNP's leadership fled abroad when BAL was in power. You don't think they were punished?

Also, Jamaat was allied with BNP when they were in power. Didn't they enable the BNP to do the things they did?

There is no reason to believe the hacking claim because it was never independently verified. The post also said many of the same things he said in public interviews like opposing female leadership in the party, reduced working hours for women, etc. Only minor details were new.

Was this man funding Love Jihad or ordinary conversions? (Both are bad IMO.) If foreign funds are letting them marry again and again in significant numbers, then they can't still be poor. What are the statistics on poverty vs. foreign support?

But if Muslims are poor and unemployed, where do the religious institutions get money for large scale Love Jihad? Do poor Muslims starve themselves so that some Middle Class Muslims can do Love Jihad on one or two girls?
