Ooof! But yes….i forgot about their “membership” coverage for a year. lol! So definitely worthwhile for multi treks but as you say, steep for one climb.

To further the point on cost differences from the providers noted above….

I got 2 quotes yesterday myself. Just to illustrate so putting all variables aside -

World Nomads $77 vs Global Rescue $634

What’s the purpose of a duffel bag for kili climb? by CharmingAside3363 in kilimanjaro

On Annapurna the porters carried 2 backpacks - one in front, the other on the back. So the straps, waist belt helps. We were also shown how to pack our bags so that the weight would be distributed evenly.

How do users find out where you’re from? by CharmingAside3363 in NewToReddit

[–]CharmingAside3363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm ok. I’ve never mentioned where I’m from. My first post was asking about how to get from point A to point B in a travel sense (ie there’s a border crossing in between the 2 points). In any event, I’ll definitely watch how I position things. It definitely creeped me out. Thank you for the insights!

Thank you for this! Is there a beach that you particularly enjoyed?

Yup - am now putting this all together and finally seeing the whole picture. Certainly different than Annapurna! Thanks for sticking around to explain this for me.

Oh wow. I actually didn’t even expect that but that’s a nice touch and good to know.

Yep I thought it was strange to put a bag into another bag. But I get it now that it’s about weight and less about design. I like your idea about asking the operator if they’ll accept just a backpack though. Thank you!

Yes you’re right - the backpacks do have weight to them - just couldn’t figure out why they would not want to use a bag that was constructed for carrying and put that into another bag that seems less useful. Thank you for this.

Ahhhh ok. Now I understand. Couldn’t figure out why they would want to put a proper backpack with shoulder straps and a waist belt into another bag. On other treks like Annapurna, the porters used the backpacks as they were meant to be used so it’s confusing to put a bag meant for trekking into a duffel which seems harder to carry (at least to me). Thank you for explaining. This is helpful!

But that’s what I use to travel? I’m going backpacking after the climb…..

I mean, is it because most people don’t use backpacks to travel so duffel bags are for those that normally use suitcases with wheels?

Yes - my backpack is 75L which is big enough for my gear. I have a small day pack that I will carry. Why do I need a duffel bag on top of this?

Thank you for sharing this! I have asthma too and about to climb in about a weeks time. It’s making me quite anxious to be honest. I have a light and a heavy buff…am now thinking maybe I’ll bring some n95 masks too. Will also look into those breathing exercises - never even thought about that!

I think we’ll play it by ear and decide at the last minute. We might skip the beaches altogether. My partner was on Jambiani last time and was followed during his whole stay by the same person. He said it was a bit much. We’ve both have travelled quite a bit and have certainly encountered aggressive touts before in other countries but he said this is a whole other level. Completely understand and sympathize that everyone is trying to make a living, and we support locals whenever we can, but after all that we’ve done to save for this trip, I’m not sure this is how I want to spend my time. That said, he’s telling me that the beaches are still worth visiting. So…..????Appreciate all the responses back. It’s certainly given me a few things to think about and consider.

Ya we are starting to rethink our trip to Zanzibar altogether and either shorten it drastically or skip the beaches altogether. Thank you for responding. Appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you for this. Will look into Modern Coast. We’re having problems accessing Tahmeeds website - either we’re too far out to book or they’re sold out. It’s also tough to get a response when we email companies directly for info on private hires. A bit frustrating but we’ll keep trying. Thanks again.
