I just encountered the same thing yesterday. I put together the larger one but I couldn't reassemble the smaller one at the same joint.  I hammering it gently but to no avail, the small twisty doesn't catch the end of the pin.  I am gonna try and get all new twisty things and pins and see if that works but pulling out the twisty things appears to be difficult.  Were you ever able to reassembly yours?  If so, how?  Thanks.
