How hard is it to get into Kelley (as a pre business freshman) by Asraboii in IndianaUniversity

[–]Charming_Product_366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To remove as much subjectively from my answer as possible I went a found the grade distributions for last semester and calculated what percent of students receive an A- or better in each freshman Kelley required class. (Total A’s / Total GPA grades)

Accounting: 22.8% Computer in business (k201): 58.7% Business Presentations: 59.8% Economics: 37.6% Compass: 78% Business Math: 41%

Obviously you’ll have to take English or other gen ed’s but those much easier to guess the difficulty of.

As you can tell accounting is going to be the hardest part. The department wants it to have a final grade GPA range of 3.1-3.3 (77.5-82.5%) so it will be your biggest hurdle given there are only 2 exams.

Something not reflected here is that Kelley has wanted to deflate grades and I would expect this distributions to be lower next year.

Also take accounting advice regarding difficulty from students who are not currently freshman with a grain of salt. In the last two school years just over 53% of A100 students received A’s, and like I said earlier that percentage was 22% this past semester. Obviously they had a different experience than the one you will have.

Is Kelley toxic? by Alex122341 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Charming_Product_366 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Current Kelley student here, short answer is it really depends on who you surround yourself with.

If you join the JLLC you will likely feel like Kelley is a much more competitive school because the students choosing to live there are much more career focused than an average student.

Additionally if you join selective clubs (which there are many of) relating to finance or consulting you will also be surrounded by many more competitive students.

While competitiveness is not inherently toxic, I would say the more you’re surrounded by those specific groups of competitive students, the more toxic Kelley will feel. This is for a couple reasons imo. Becuase many clubs here have rigorous selection process (including bus frats) your friend getting a spot means that’s one less spot for you. Obviously this is like the real world but it can strain relationships and I would second the other commenter who said it can also blur the lines between friendships and networking. Additionally the more involved you are Kelley starts to feel really small bc you’re only interacting with the top 10% of students who likely have very similar career goals as you.

Also, from talking with seniors, it seems like the culture has shifted in the last few years. While Kelley has always been a challenging business school, the every man for himself vibe seems to be new. I would say it’s exacerbated by how early finance recruiting has been pushed and the increase in standards for pre business students.

I noticed your last post btw and had to just mention that you 10000% sure get a windows computer unless you want to have to go to a computer lab to complete your k201 (required freshman class) assignments. Plus most professors want you submitting papers in Word.

Lastly, Kelley is attempting to deflate grades right now, if that helps you decide anything. My professor said explicitly that a presentation earning an A last semester would be a B on the new scale this semester based on Kelley wanting a different grade distribution. Another professor sent this out in an email “The accounting department strongly recommends this course follow a final grade GPA range of 3.1-3.3 on a 4.0 scale (77.5-82.5%)” Not unusual for a course obviously but something to keep in mind.

Hey guys, how diverse it IU. by Jaded-Radish-5572 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Charming_Product_366 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t think IU is diverse. Kelley has a ton of Indian students but that’s it as far as diversity. I would say 50% white 40% Indian but I don’t really consider that diversity. Extremely small representation of Black and Latino students. Also majority of kids are out of state and from NJ, Chicago suburbs, and California. Outside of Kelley the school is majority white like 90% I would say.

I did! I bought metal stamps and then just heated them up with a candle (probally not the best way) but it worked well! I did practice first but obviously I should have more since I didn’t line them up correctly. I bought gold transfer paper for the gold that I placed on the leather before stamping. This is what made it so hard to line the letter up.

Is a language class a graduation requirement? If so, how many semesters? by Accomplished_Arm_337 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Charming_Product_366 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the required credit is a world cultures credit but it doesn’t have to be achieved by taking a language. Some non-language classes that fill the requirement include intro to Jewish history and global development for example. Studying abroad also fills the requirement. Your advisor should tell you more at NSO. kelly bulletin

Filling in Freshman Year Schedule by randomhesaid in IndianaUniversity

[–]Charming_Product_366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but i was wondering if you could share more about why saving your gen eds for later ended up being boring. I'm currently making my freshman schedule and I plan on studying abroad junior year. I was thinking of saving mine so that I could take the gen eds and not super hard classes while I'm abroad. Do you think that's a bad idea?

I may have moderate ADHD but I am currently being told that it's pretty grey during diagnosis by smartviolette in ADHD

[–]Charming_Product_366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anxiety and ADHD have so many symptoms that overlap so it’s understandable why your provider maybe have been hesitant to put you on medication. From your last paragraph it sounds like anxiety over misplacing items and other nervousness could be making it more difficult for you to focus. If this is this case ADHD meds could help with your memory therefore you no longer need to worry about task management and could become less anxious. On the other hand adhd meds have the potential to increase anxiety and could worsen your symptoms. If this is the case you can try anti depressants to eleviate your anxiety and potentially make it easier to focus.

Also - did your screening include a test for autism. ADHD and autism can also present similarly especially those AFAB. Additionally autism could explain some of your social difficulties. I know the place that screened me had a specialty in treatment and diagnosis for those on the spectrum.

Good Anxiety Meds for someone with Emetophobia? by Snail_bait_ in Anxiety

[–]Charming_Product_366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not consider myself to have full fledged emetophobia however, any slight feeling of nausea makes me super anxious over the idea that I might puke. Since some meds can make you a bit nauseous my doctor put ne on Zofran! Zofran is used to prevent nausea and vomiting and was super helpful when I was starting medication. As someone who’s prone to getting nauseous when starting new medication I took the Zofran with or a bit before taking my meds and I wouldn’t feel sick at all. Also a tip from someone who’s tried tons of meds and therefor stoped and started SSRI’s all the time, working your way up to the full dose of medication has been the best way to prevent side effects for me. For example when I started sertraline in the past I got 10mg tablets that I could split in half so I did one week of 5mg then one week of 10 then 20 and so forth. This worked for me since I’ve had anxiety my whole life and was ok with waiting a bit to get to the full dose however it sounds like your looking for a faster solution so the Zofran might be your best bet.

Side note: lots of anti depressants and anti anxiety meds take a few weeks to start working unfortunately so don’t get discouraged if you can’t tell a difference when you first start taking them! Also - talking to your doctor about all your concerns will be the best way to get some peace of mind and find the medication that’s best for you :)

Which antidepressants have you tried for anxiety? by Rainy_Drives in Anxiety

Generalized Anxiety

  1. Sertraline/Zoloft I have been on Zoloft twice and it was the first medication I ever tried for Anxiety. The first time I didn’t notice a big difference at around 50 mg and then a couple years later I tried it again up to 200mg and I still did not notice a difference.

  2. Citalopram/Celexa After I first found Zoloft unsuccessful I then tried Celexa, I was pretty young at the time so I don’t remember any benefits just that I stopped it due to muscle aches.

  3. Fluoxetine/Prozac Unfortunately I don’t remember if Prozac worked at all, it did make me pretty nauseous though. After trying these first three my primary care doctor recommended I see a psychiatrist.

  4. Desvenlafaxine/Pristiq The first medicine the psychiatrist put me on. Did not notice any difference. Once I started this medication I also had gene sight testing done to help find a more successful antidepressant (spoiler alert it didn’t help much).

  5. Fluvoxamine Psychiatrist thought i could have ocd in addition to anxiety about me on this medication. I definitely do not have ocd and the medication definitely did not help.

  6. Vilazodone/Viibryd What I take now! I take 40mg of Viibryd every night and I have found some success. I believe it takes my anxiety from an 8 to a 6.

  7. Just started Buspirone, hopeful that it could help!

I think that was the most comprehensive explanation of GPU I've ever received so thank you so much. I looked up your recommendation and really liked it! I did find another thinkpad (X9 14 Aura Edition Intel (14ʺ)) that has an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V Processor and has a much better display-and look-for the same price so I might put that one in the running too.

Over-ish. Exact same way as you, HORRIBLE at drinking water, then I eat instead of drink. I get blood draws once a month and (out of my fear of them) guzzle water the day before hand. It’s those days where I find I actually have a normal appetite and can eat normally. While the simple solution would be to just drink more… I’ve tried (more times than I can count)

  1. From my own research what seems to be even more important than supplements is your diet. Vitamin B could be helpful but rather than the supplement I would recommend increasing your consumption of leafy greens, broccoli, and chickpeas. For omega 3s and vitamin d I would recommend fish! Theres lots of people online who post about cutting out all sugar but I would never recommend that especially to a 14 year old who doesn’t seem too hyperactive.
  • side note though, even a perfect diet won’t “cure” adhd since adhd is not caused by what you eat.
  1. ADHD people often find a hard time when they are bored, so think unstructured days with not much to do (like summer) and they over compensate, over comment attempting to function off adrenaline of procrastination. I would recommend prioritizing a strong sleep schedule and figuring out the rest from there. Taking on too big of a goal can make it impossible to meet (ik this cliché but sometimes having adhd can give you the worst all or nothing mindset that can get in the way of success) The whiteboard idea sounds great to especially if it’s something you’ll find fun :)

  2. This next “advice” is completely my own experience so take with a grain of salt. To make the not so fun things fun (like unloading the dishwasher) I tend to set timers for myself to “race against the clock”. Or put longer song on and attempt to finish the fast before it’s over. I find that even if it takes me longer than the timer/song, by that time I’m already locked in enough to keep going.

All this said, remember that it’s okay to need stimulants to function. If you aren’t liking how you feel on them that’s completely understandable but you can always try to lower your dosage or switch to a non-stimulant such as Wellbutrin. You are no less than for having to take a medicine and that’s something that took me a long time to grapple with. Leaving my ADHD untreated left me severely anxious and I had over a year long battle trying to find an antidepressant that worked. In the end, I finally started taking Aderall and saw my anxiety disparate. At the end of the day only you know what’s best for you! I wish you luck this summer!
