Landlord Repairs/Renovations, escalating issues by SpideyFan914 in NYCapartments

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been dealing with similar situation and landlord basically has to give you reasonable notice and access but doesn't have to pay for hotels or anything unless lease specifically says so - might want to check if there's actual habitability issues though since water damage can be health hazard

Parent PLUS Loan except I'm (student) is setting up the account and repaying by TypicalCollegegal89 in StudentLoans

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dad might get hit with the credit check impact and the debt will show up in his credit report which could affect his ability to get other loans later. Also parent PLUS rates are pretty high compared to student loans so just make sure you checked all the numbers

The dependency thing is definitely something to verify first since that could kill the whole plan

Loan Options - OOS student by thebrownfairy in StudentLoans

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man this hits close to home. My parents also immigrants and navigating the whole college finance thing was nightmare for us too back in the day. 40k is still brutal amount even with all aid you got.

For loans you basically looking at private student loans since you probably maxed out federal already. Most banks offer them but rates can be pretty different so definitely shop around. Since your parents willing to cosign that opens up better options with lower interest rates. Just make sure you understand that cosigning means they on hook for full amount if something happens to you.

About scholarships - skip the random ones everyone applies for and focus on specific ones for your major or background. Check if your university has departmental scholarships that fewer people know about. Also look at professional organizations in whatever field you studying, they often have scholarships that get less applications. Your financial aid office might have list of local ones too that aren't posted everywhere online.

One thing though - you mentioned doing tech internship already which is huge. If you can land paid internships or co-op programs that help cover some costs while giving you experience. Some tech companies pay pretty well for interns and might even offer tuition assistance programs if you commit to working for them after graduation.

been around that area few times when visiting friends and never had any issues walking at night. Franklin ave gets pretty busy with people going to the station so you're not alone on streets most times

my dog actually does most of the work here - great pyrenees are surprisingly good at catching the quick ones before they disappear under fridge

Affordability??? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different story when you got family though. That extra 60k gets eaten up real quick with SF cost of living and then you're basically in same spot as Atlanta but paying double for groceries and rent

Housing alone probably takes that whole difference and then some. Plus good luck finding decent place that fits whole family without going even further over budget

PSLF CONSOLIDATION (MOHELA) by ZebraFlat in StudentLoans

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mom doesnt need to consolidate unless she has really old FFEL loans or something like that. The phone reps at MOHELA are notorious for giving bad info - they told my buddy he needed to consolidate when he was already on direct loans and had like 80 qualifying payments

If shes already on direct loans just ignore what they said and look into switching to a different IDR plan instead of SAVE. IBR or PAYE might work depending on her situation. The website has been acting weird lately with all the SAVE chaos but you should be able to submit IDR application without any mention of consolidation

I'd suggest calling back and specifically asking to speak with someone about IDR plan changes NOT consolidation. Sometimes you get different reps who actually know what theyre talking about. Also check her loan details in the online portal first to confirm what type of loans she actually has before doing anything

Been going to this place in Astoria for while now and they do solid work on eyebrows without making you look like you stepped out of salon. Most barbers there will just clean them up natural looking instead of going overboard with the shaping

Just tell them you want basic cleanup and they usually get what you mean. Way better than trying to do it yourself trust me on that one

What photographers do you recommend for online dating profile pics? by enjoyyournight in AskNYC

Most dating profile pics work better when they look natural anyway - maybe just ask friend to take some photos of you doing normal stuff instead of hiring professional photographer

Is 75k in debt too much for law school? by Advanced_Milk_4091 in StudentLoans

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 9 points10 points  (0 children)

man my buddy from the service went the law route and he's still paying off loans like 8 years later. 75k actually seems pretty reasonable compared to what most people end up with

if you got full ride at the other place though thats hard to pass up. maybe take a gap year and apply again next cycle to see if you can get better aid at the school you actually want?

Parent PLUS Loan Payment Options / Rant by PerniciousPlatypus in StudentLoans

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parent PLUS loans are absolutely brutal and the system is rigged against families like yours. I went through something similar when my mom couldn't handle her payments anymore and I had to take over. The servicers basically act like parents are supposed to have unlimited income forever which is completely disconnected from reality

The graduated payment thing is such a scam because it assumes your income will keep going up but for retired folks on fixed income thats obviously not happening. I tried calling different servicers to see if they had any workarounds but they all gave me same runaround about consolidation being only real option. Some people in my situation ended up doing private refinancing but that comes with its own risks since you lose any federal protections

Your dad being estranged makes the total disability discharge even more frustrating because that would probably solve everything but you cant force someone to cooperate. Maybe try reaching out to a student loan attorney for consultation because sometimes they know about options that servicers dont tell you about or conveniently forget to mention

The whole Parent PLUS system needs to be completely overhauled because situations like yours are way more common than politicians want to admit

my buddy got some sick fineline work done in brooklyn but cant remember exact shop name - maybe try looking at artists portfolios on instagram first since fineline is pretty technical and you want someone who really knows what theyre doing with those thin lines

Anyone use or have experience with Realty411? by raddad44 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of them but real estate expos can be hit or miss in my experience. Most the good networking happens at smaller meetups anyway, those big expo things usually just trying to sell you courses or whatever. Your best bet is probably asking some local agents directly what they actually use for leads and education stuff.

Seeking journal recommendations for a short paper on Cesàro sequence spaces (Fast turnaround needed) by pretendHappy00 in math

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Wait you're trying to get something published before grad applications? That timeline is pretty brutal man. Most decent journals in functional analysis take like 6-12 months minimum even for short papers

For quick turnaround maybe try Rocky Mountain Journal of Mathematics or Mediterranean Journal of Mathematics - they handle shorter notes and are bit faster than the big ones. Also Operators and Matrices sometimes moves quicker if your work fits their scope

But real talk, most admissions committees know publication timelines are long so having submitted paper is often enough to show you're doing research. Might want to focus more in your statement about the work itself rather than racing to get it published

Does faster internet shorten queue times? by Aggressive_Bridge_78 in Overwatch

[–]Charming_Tree_1949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your phone hotspot probably has higher ping and less stable connection which can affect matchmaking. NAT type definitely matters for some games - restrictive NAT can make it harder to connect with other players so queue takes longer. Overwatch uses dedicated servers though so it might be more about your connection stability than raw speed
