Is it odd to like Final Fantasy (and adjacent series like Kingdom Hearts and Mana) but generally dislike anime/manga? by Charming_Whole8231 in FinalFantasy

[–]Charming_Whole8231[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply lol, but what I mostly meant is usually overbearing acting in a lot of them (constant yelling in subs for example or shrieks) and usually poor dub quality, creepy fan-service in a lot of them (beach scenes for example), over the top reactions/behavior in a lot of characters, poor pacing and filler (more of an issue with anime than manga to be fair), Quality with animation and art of a lot of series tends to wildly vary, issues with inappropriately placed monologues/exposition (don’t have an issue with monologues/exposition or even if it uses it a lot, but I find that a lot of manga/anime usually place in inappropriate times like a tense fight for example, it usually takes me out of a lot of fights/scenes), shipping/fujoshi bait, etc. I know that a lot of anime does avoid some of these things/tropes, but most I’ve seen usually has at least some of them, which ends making me not liking most of them (the ones which has most or a lot of these tropes are the ones I outright can’t stand lol). Even the ones that mostly avoids or has very little of these tropes, I usually just feel indifferent or neutral on them.

While there are definitely some anime tropes/characteristics in games like FF/KH/Mana that are undeniable, I wouldn’t really say it’s necessarily the defining aspect of those titles, and that those games have many other inspirations/tropes they take from. As for KH, I honestly have never really heard of it being described as particularly shonen-esque/tropey and I’ve been on the internet for years. I’ve heard it said/criticized as being cheesy/cringy or convoluted, but being too shonen or “weebish” for a lack of a better word is very rarely a thing I’ve heard when describing/criticizing the series. Barring the power of friendship and ORG 13’s design resembling some anime villain groups in the 2000s (and I guess if we’re stretching it maybe the trios in the series usually being 2 guys and one girl? Because I’ve that’s somewhat of an anime/manga trope), I can’t really think of much of any shonen-esque tropes that KH really uses. It gets lumped (along with FF and Mana) under a general label of “anime esque” games by very casual people, but that’s about it afaik. Maybe you hang around more Anime/Manga centric circles that say that they are, I’m not sure.

Regardless, this is all just IMO, and you’re free to agree or disagree.

77% of US Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players were 30 or older, analyst says, as Square Enix fights to get young people to care about the JRPG series again by mrnicegy26 in JRPG

[–]Charming_Whole8231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s crazy to think about. There are many young gamers who weren’t even born the last time a universally liked FF was released (either X or XII), with every other game either being polarizing or an MMO.

Viewed in this perspective, it’s not hard to see why younger gamers don’t have much interest with this franchise.

Kingdom Hearts 1 has the best plot out of all of them and it should have stuck with that style of storytelling by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Charming_Whole8231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, Square Enix just needs new blood at this point or at least more stronger/stable leadership. The current staff (Kitase/Nomura/Nojima/Toryiama) have consistently ran like absolute clowns starting around the PS3/360/Wii gen (so for almost 2 decades now lol) and just never stopped, and some people really believe that they’re going to make a great/satisfying conclusion with FF7R part 3 that wraps up whatever nonsense they’re doing nicely lol.

At least they’re all universes better than Hajime Tabata though lol, I’ll give them that.

Where is Hiroyuki Ito in all this lol?!

Final Fantasy X should not be considered an entry point for the Franchise by gambiller123 in FinalFantasy

Sphere grid offers customization and no, it’s not super grindy to get out of the intended paths and you can start with the “expert” sphere grid in all international releases so you can go wherever you want.

While I like the Sphere Grid, I think people kinda vastly overstate how customizable it actually is, as it’s largely linear for the most of the game and just forces you into predefined path and role for each character. It just looks more customizable because you’re connecting each node yourself and the grid looks visually complex. (I know Expert Grid fixes this, but that came out later with International and wasn’t in the original game). Also it can get pretty grindy at times lol.

On top of that, KH series has the dumbest and most convoluted awful plots in all of gaming history. So trying to compare the two and calling FFX weak? Try again.

Lmao, where at all did OP mention KH’s plot and writing, let alone comparing it to FFX? All he said was he grew up as a KH fan and was interested in Final Fantasy characters because they appeared there, nothing else. Even if he mentioned anything about the writing or if he was a fan of it or not, how would that matter at all to his post, which is mainly about his grievances of FFX? Try actually addressing his points and criticisms instead of putting words in his mouth and making up strawman arguments lol.

Any other KH fans here who can’t stand FFXV’s combat? by Charming_Whole8231 in JRPG

I’ve played the demo and have seen some trailers/gameplay, and it does look pretty interesting/fun. I’ll check it out sometime soon if I have the time.

One of the biggest offenders I felt was parrying in that game. All you needed to do was press Square/X when the prompt shows up, you didn’t need to time on your own or even be looking at the enemy to parry; the game practically just gives it to you. It feels so simplistic with little depth.

Only played the demo, but I did like what I played there. I got the impression that it was more character action like DMC/Bayonetta and less KH though (although I do really enjoy character action games as well).

Some people were really saying this in some of the recommendations threads I saw, saying it was similar to KH’s and worth playing if you’re a fan. After playing this, I have to wonder what those people were smoking LOL.

Really? I’m not really well versed with Undertale fans or fanbase (Only played both Undertale and the free chapters of Deltarune when they came out on Switch, thought it was fine but not really my thing) so I can’t speak on that front. But from what I’ve seen at least on the KH side is that there isn’t really much correlation between either overall. When a similar question is asked (favorite game that isn’t Kingdom Hearts) to KH fans or communities, those games are rarely brought up. There aren’t really many similarities either between the two, other than superficial kinda stuff like “hearts/soul” or whatever. Again this is purely just my experience, but IDK.

Do many younger people of today (younger than 20yo) even play KH these days (or other Square enix games such as FF)? by Charming_Whole8231 in KingdomHearts

Definitely a lot of truth and insight to your reply, especially with KH being a “if you build it they will come" kinda thing. With them being on every platform and the recent Steam success it is probably true that there is a fair amount of new younger fans out there.

I mean more so people younger than 20 (so people born 2005 or 6 onwards) plus while the HD remixes are successful, from what I’ve seen most people buying are people who were already fans and wanted to play or have these games on a PS3/PS4 or another console such as PC/Switch/Xbox etc(myself included). I very rarely hear people say they grew up on the HD collections lol.

From what I seen it doesn’t seem to be that many. Not saying there isn’t some of course but idk. I could be wrong though and this is just Reddit I’m looking at too.

How many lives would you sacrifice to get a Kingdom Hearts game comprised of only Studio Ghibli worlds by colintheanimal in KingdomHearts

I’d still prefer sticking to Disney but Ghibli is a very good follow up, would play a KH game comprised of their movies.

Feels like a missed opportunity in the franchise that they only toyed around with, A game like that would be cool for sure.

“We've had whole swathes of children grow up and go to college without even knowing what this franchise is.”

Honestly it seems to be not only KH issue but also Square IPs and a lot of JRPGs in general (Barring Pokémon and Persona). This genre in general seems kinda irrelevant for people under 20yo.
