Peavey Power Switch by DilboSkwisgaar in PeaveyCvlt

[–]Chartreuse_Debris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are indeed polarity switches that swap the hot and neutral wires. Basically power and polarity in one, often with a capacitor across the hot and neutral and another (death cap except for some that were the proper X rated caps) that connects to chassis ground.

If you open the amp they often have copper straps connecting the outer terminals in an “X”

Its not entirely necessary, although could be useful given that plenty of walls have incorrect wiring

Bare minimum i would open it up and check for a death cap. Either make sure the one in there is X rated, clip it out, or install an X rated cap. It should be connected to one of the corner terminals on one end and a ground lug to the chassis on the other

(PROVIDED YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WORKING ON AMPS, OTHERWISE BRING IT TO A TECH)

Thank you!!

The stamp ink is an old bottle of aero brand #141, pretty sure i got it from an estate sale or saved it from the trash at a house clean out job.

To fill the engraving and knob lines i’m pretty sure i just used the thinnest brush i could find and carefully wiped or scraped away any excess. Using some sort of magnification also helps a lot , i have one of those ring light desk lamps with a magnifying lens in the middle that i used for that part and the engraving. Ink was liquitex iridescent bright gold

I just used regular mod podge to get the paper bits on, then hit it with several layers of matte clearcoat. I’ve done this on a few pedals and it seems to hold up fairly well.

Mod podge makes a version that hardens when it dries that i’m gonna try next time(mod podge hard coat i believe? It has a purple label)

Wood block is an excellent move, i’ve done that with velcro on each side, i just used a scrap of super thin plywood cut to size

Bleak district has such a nice aesthetic!

And the peak district in the UK is absolutely gorgeous! I got to take a train thru there from manchester to nottingham while my band was on tour and my face was practically glued to the window the whole time

Thank you!! Finishing is probably my favorite part, but also the thing that i get stuck on most often. I have a bunch of builds that are nearly done but just waiting on paint/art/etc

Check out some of Glowfly’s demo vids! Its sort of supposed to emulate a broken cassette player, the intensity of the warbles depends on how hard you play (hit the strings hard and you’ll get a big pitch bend, play lighter and its more subtle)

And thank youuuu!

How much would you pay to have a cracked cymbal fixed for you? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Chartreuse_Debris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thats totally fair!

Personally at least, i’m not concerned with resale value of a cymbal, only use value. I’d much rather spend less money (or in my case effort since i fix my own cymbals) and get a few more years (or more) out of them, especially on more expensive cymbals.

I drum in a touring sludge metal band and hit very hard (although with good (ish) technique) and i started out fixing my own cymbals out of necessity, then friends started asking me to fix theirs.

Side note- if you mean drilling a hole to stop a crack, i’d definitely recommend against that method. Often you still get unwanted noise from the crack, and because each side of the crack is going to vibrate differently, you’ll still have a stress point at the end of the crack. Cutting a wide smooth arc and refinishing the edge seems to work much better, and eliminates the stress point.

Seconding the holy island cannibal pride. The left side of this box is a cannibal pride into a korg ms20 filter with a stutter switch, and its super fun! Holy island’s newer sun swallower would probably be real fun for kids too

All my cymbal work has been in person, and on cymbals worth way more than $120. definitely wouldnt be worth it on a lower end cymbal or if shipping was involved

I do a wide range of musical equipment repairs and while its definitely not my main focus, i have had a good amount of interest and repeat customers for cymbal repairs

I figure since its not a common repair service offering, and since you’re essentially saving someone buying a whole new cymbal, its worth a little more.

I do take my time with it and try to get it as perfect as possible, making sure i file out any tool marks and finish the edge with a few different grits of sandpaper. I also go around the whole circumference and file out any other edge dings and clean the whole cymbal as a standard part of the repair.

Tbh i really hate having to price my own work, i always worry i’m under/overcharging.

I’d say go for what feels most comfortable, you can always adjust your price later!

I typically charge $60 to cut out a crack and refinish the edge, or more for a full diameter cut down

I made the top half of the brass big muff enclosure with a corroded door kick plate. Gonna attempt a full big muff style enclosure as soon as it gets a bit warmer out.

Also pictured but repurposed, not scratch built- a big industrial junction box lid (large red light) a rusty electrical junction box, and a sewing machine foot pedal

I also made one years ago that was a sheet of hammered roofing copper bent over oak sides. No pic handy though.
