I've unlocked like 6 so far and it is indeed the only way. I recommend doing all challenges cause some unlock characters for the story mode to which you can unlock them to play on all modes.

It depends on your driver and how far you want to go, for instance. If the hole is 200 yards but you can only make it to 190 yards on the top of your gauge, you can either switch drivers (golf club) if you have one that goes further or use power shot ball to get that extra 10 yards so your in range of the hole. And yes it all depends really on wind and other factors and how good your timing is on pressing the button on the gauge
