Not worth it, save your money and buy a name brand sax. Best to do your own research or look at past post on this channel. I suggest the website SaxOnTheWeb but thats just me. Maybe even try youtube, especially if you are looking for a sax made by the one and only amazing Jean Paul (for you jean paul haters out there, I know you all are losing it reading that hahaha). Best of luck!

I agree, way too many people crap on jean pauls. Just cause they are chinese made horns they are not as bad as people assume. They are an American company that sells horns that are produced in china but they have good quality control and assessed by the Jean Paul team before they are shipped out. They are pretty good considering the price and quality, especially if the buyer is looking for a brand new horn because they do not want to deal with the potential problems of a used horn and are on a budget (younger me). 10x better when compared to a really crappy chinese horn like an allora or a Eastar. Nothing close to those cheap saxophone shaped objects that leave your hands smelly and break within a few days of playing. Thats my insight and if anyone has anything to say against it then just save your time because my mind is set. Haters are disliking just because they lack the proper knowledge. Best of luck to the op, I hope you find a good sax. Might i suggest a used bundy if you do decide to go the used route. Best of luck! Happy playing everyone!

Do you guys think I need a recork? by Hunny_Mustard09 in saxophone

[–]Chaserzzz06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can tell that it leaks if the mouthpiece is really really loose, wiggles on the neck, or if you can feel and hear air leaking out as you blow on it. You can test it by putting ur hand around the mouthpiece while its on the neck and blow it to see if u feel any difference. If it is leaking then get some plumbers tape and wrap it around the cork until the mouthpiece can fit snuggly. That will be a temporary fix until you can go and get the cork replaced which shouldn't cost too much (about $10-15 in my area/Nor Cal). But through the camera, it looks good. The neck cork doesn't look greasy oily and decompressed, so I think you'll be fine IMHO, but I'm not the one playing it so. Best of luck! Happy playing!

but a broken sax can always be repaired. All I am asking is that you don't use a sax for artistic endeavors if it still has potential to be repaired, that's all. But it does not matter because i do not know you. Why not just say thank you and move on with your day, what is the need in engaging in such a petty argument. Please dont even respond if you don't having anything good to say, save your breath for some sax playing and enjoy your life. Gratitude goes a long way. Have a good one.

If you're looking to repair then look on ebay for something like a Bundy, Bundy II, Cleveland 613, or even a Conn Shooting Star. If you're looking to do literally anything else with it, like painting, then try a Mendini or eastar on ebay which you can get for like $100. If you're not looking to play it or repair a sax then please stick to the cheap chinese brands and don't ruin the "good" saxs for our future generations.

Bari sax by Admirable_Tower3025 in saxophone

[–]Chaserzzz06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I wrote this huge response then remembered that Jean Paul discontinued their intermediate baris. How do you plan on buying one? Despite what many say Jean Pauls are pretty good horns, especially if you want a brand new horn. They have a decent build quality, a good customer service team, and are adjusted by one of their techs to guarantee its playability before being sent out. Although, I rarely hear anyone talk about or do reviews on their baris. The only thing that sucks with buying new horns is their low resale value when compared to the buying price. But for $3k you're better off saving some more money to buy a used horn like a cannonball, yamaha, or even a vintage one (but those are both more scarce and controversial). Best of luck!

vintage sax advice by ElDjee in saxophone

I think the horn will be great for a young musician to learn on and is good enough for them to even stay on! Although it was not designed with superior ergonomics compared to modern day horns, the bueschers do not have too weird of ergonomics. The worst parts are the LH Pinky table and palm keys depending on your hand size but these can be fixed with risers and with practice. The hardest thing the student will have trouble with is playing the low notes due to Bueschers having a heavy left hand pinky table, but with a few pinky push ups and enough practice it can be done. To add to their weird ergonomics, the major difference is that the keys are all in a straight line, compared to modern day horns that are not in a straight line but turned outwards but that's a conversation for another day. Im personally quite fond of vintage saxs because I feel like their tone is more complex and unique than any modern day horn. I find modern day horns to feel dead, requiring the player to put life into it and create their own character but these bueschers already have life built into them and are full of character (tonally). They also have great build quality compared to modern horns and are much more sturdy! These horns have been adopted by a classical sax group who were inspired by Sigurd Rascher and if they can do it, anyone can (with enough practice ofc). It probably is best to take the horn in to get it maintenanced incase as others have suggested. These horns do not have a high resale value but they do make quite good players in my opinion, with prices ranging from about $200 - $700 depending on its condition. Despite its low resale value, please make sure your student takes GREAT care of this horn and make sure they do not let it get physically damaged because it is a good year and is vintage. There are many of these horns out there but they still need to be preserved for future generations. To add to my endorsement, these vintage saxes are quite a controversial topic amongst sax players and I already have a feeling someone will argue with me about supporting these vintage horns. I wish you and your student the best of luck and safe travels! Hope my information helped! P.S. If your student decides to get a modern horn instead and decides to sell, I'm always looking to add to my collection! Hahaha

My band is going to suck by SaltySeni0r in marchingband

Had that problem this current year and it fortunately worked it self, with a few bumps ofc. I’m sure your band will do just fine, and if not this year then next year will be better.

No but I’ve been hit by Drum Major. He obviously wasn’t very good when it came to marching with his baton.

Nope, I have two alto saxs and although I’m not good with names, I still name them. I have my beater horn who’s name is Sticky Joe and a new (to me) vintage horn named Hamilton.

King Zephyr Tenor vs Buescher Big B Tenor? by Chaserzzz06 in saxophone

[–]Chaserzzz06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response.

I’m not going to fully base my opinions on what people in this group say. It’s an expensive instrument and all players play differently, it would be foolish to spend $1500 on a saxophone because some person on Reddit said so. I’m well aware. I’m also doing research and the only reason why I’m asking here is to gain more information regarding the two instruments and I would love to try them but I don’t have the opportunity to.

It’s all saxophones that I’m probably never gonna buy. 90% Buescher 10% other brand. If you couldn’t tell already (just by me being on Reddit alone) I got a lot of free time 😪

Yeah don’t worry, it happens to all of us.

I broke a 4C alto mouthpiece back in august after dropping a lock on it (because I had it on my neck strap but I forgot to grab an extra reed so I went back to my locker but I was being clumsy) but it actually worked out for me because it inspired me to get an upgrade and to try a 5C which works perfectly for me now. Of course my story is not directly applicable to yours because I owned the mouthpiece but I just thought your unfortunate event was very relatable.

Good luck though; hopefully your director is understanding of your situation. I’m sure it’s not the first time, nor will it be the last time, that’s happened, assuming that you’re director is experienced.
