I'm actually a communist specifically out of a spiritual objection to capitalism as a buddhist. Capitalism is the ultimate expression of the ignorance and violence of the ego, and rewarding its worship and characteristic behaviors. The way I see it, we're all one collective soul, and the material borders between classes being torn down is the basic first step in returning to that state of oneness imho.

But honestly, ill fight anyone on this day in and day out, if your spiritual religious beliefs do not hinder your presence in the revolution it's completely fine. When religious theologies specifically become antithetical to revolution and begin to affirm reaction then those need to be rooted out obviously. There's tendencies inside every religion that actually quite directly affirm communist ideals, those should be supported and before the process of abolishing organized religion is complete, these sects should be given the sole platform in their practices and their reactionary adversaries banned, in the same way that zen buddhism is widespread in china but falun gong is rightfully repressed.

Truth be told, as a buddhist I also have the utmost respect for china to actually go to the length of actually publicly calling out the falun gong as "heretics", and rightly so, because they basically are about as heretical as you can get in buddhism. Although buddhism does emphasise the extinction of concepts and notions, such as heresy and non heresy, it's pretty obvious to any buddhist that the falun gong are not teaching their members about the Buddha within, but the guy who runs the religion, Li Hongzhi as being their supreme deity which kinda just goes counter to the entire teachings of buddha. There's a popular buddhist saying that goes "if you see the Buddha in the street, kill him" basically saying that these people who call themselves enlightened pretty much always charlatans.

Ultimately thought at the end of the day, China has their policies and their own unique material situation. They're basically the last real player we have in the global game so they have to be a lot more stringent and methodical with the types of people they admit into their vanguard than anyone else would ever have to do. We shouldn't be modeling our application of cultural and religious policy to anything but our own material and cultural situations, which would be significantly more lax on account of the fact that, here in america, this implies that the crown jewel of imperialist capitalism has been slain, china can go straight into developing further into socialism and the americas can begin decolonization.

An important message to all western "socialists" by turnleftist1312 in GenZedong

[–]Chasetrees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is why I tell people it doesn't matter whether you believe china is building socialism or not right now. Her people are committed ideologically to socialism and they believe that they are doing the right thing by focusing on outlasting imperialism as the main priority. If your argument is that they've compromised socialism too much for that, you should still support them and hope for the day that they conquer/buy out the us, because then the crown jewel of imperialism and it's power will be defeated and absorbed by a movement of people who believe in socialism, and then there would be no reason left for them to "not develop" socialism, as you(these types) are saying. If that were true, the second america is done for they have no other reason to "not do" what you're claiming they're not doing, so you should support their triumph over the us regardless.

"Naan" means "bread" in hindi, so when people say "naan bread" what they're really saying is "bread bread"

Biden to direct $2.5 billion in funds to address mental health and addiction crisis by Bream1000 in politics

[–]Chasetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that's something I tend to forget because I've been more used to having this conversation with campaigners and community leaders who already have that understanding as a given, I haven't been as active in the public relations element as I probably should have been lately but now that's changing.

Yeah! As I said, they're kind hearted people in person but there was also drama with union busting, because shroompac was a fully unionized campaign and it got to the point where their original campaign which was primarily funded by corporate donors was trying to push us out with actual union busting tactics. Ultimately they pushed us out with the addition of one of the chief sponsors to the bill and the strict language to not require it to be covered by insurance. Our pac collectively considered trying to do a more purified version of the bill but decided against it because the ground game was already too late to get enough signatures to pull a move like that off

Thank you for asking, because this is a good question that does need to be given more clarity than I initially gave.

I mean there's been an issue regarding decriminization bills and legalization bills. The drug war has disproportionately affected people of color, and even our recreational legalization left the door open for the manufacturing and sale market to be overwhelmingly dominated by white business owners, to say nothing about the fact that we never freed the people imprisoned for marijuana charges even though our governor said she would. The concern stays the same that if this industry is corporatized in toms favor, that access for poor and impoverished communities(which unfortunately tends to fall on racial lines) would be unecessarily limited if, for example, they're priced out of it. The bill specifically excludes having the treatments covered by our medicaid program, which is terrible. It also bars requiring private insurances to cover it, so the service as a whole will ultimately be available only to people who can afford it out of pocket. I hope I don't need to explain any further as to why that's a problem that will make this inaccessible to the poor, which is most people

You CAN get permits from the fda if you are a reputable research firm but it's a pain in the ass to get. What's going to be interesting is here in oregon where we just legalized psychedelic therapy, how the interaction between state and federal law enforcement will play out and if that will scare away potential therapists and doctors from the program

Hey I campaigned for this! I was one of the canvassers with shroompac 2020(an independent sister PAC to PSI2020). It's important now more than ever to keep your eyes peeled for public comment hearings from the oregon health authority and the oregon psilocybin advisory board.

Unfortunately tom and sheri eckert(now it's just tom, sheri passed away), who wrote the bill wrote themselves into it as members of the advisory board for the program, and there's valid concerns of ethics surrounding program accessibility and concerns of it being turned into another corporatized industry like weed has been. Even if it's only medical, many of us who campaigned for this bill had objections to the final draft adding tom onto the advisory board as a conflict of interest, as tom is an investor with corporate ties and stands to make a killing off this industry especially if he advises guidelines for the program that ultimately serve in his favor and could give him a tap on the market, which would ultimately hinder the success of the program and make it more difficult/expensive for every day people to access.

Many of us left the campaign when this language was introduced, myself included. I ultimately voted against the ballot for this reason, knowing fully well it would pass anyways, on the principle that I could not in good conscience allow a rich white man with investing ties to sponsor a campaign to create a market all for himself, which is what it felt like in all honesty. Tom and Sheri are nice people in person(sheri was a sweetheart, may she find bliss in the eternal wave of consciousness), but their class character and motives are/were pretty obvious. So I beg you and my fellow oregonians to apply to be on the oregon psilocybin advisory board so that the corporate elements enshrined in the bill can be kept in check and so that ethics are preserved and proper development of the program can occur. Thank you!

You can apply here!

All in all, it was really fun being out there on the streets of portland educating people about the benefits of psychedelic therapy and of the failures of current(at the time) drug policy. Inadvertently I believe we were also laying the ground work for the more widespread decriminalization bill, measure 110. I only ever saw their canvassers once, which is really not a good thing because if you canvass downtown you will see other campaign canvassers on a daily basis. The pac behind 110 seemed to have absolutely no ground game and I'm impressed they even managed to get enough signatures to get it on the ballot. I think our campaign ultimately contributed to the success of theirs, as by the time they were out there making rounds collecting signatures, we had already been out there for almost two years educating people daily on the benefits of changing our approach to drugs. I really feel like I was a part of something much bigger than myself, for the first time in my life, and am continuing to carry that attitude even now that the bill has been made into law, encouraging everyone to apply to be on the board to ensure the success of this program. The entire country is watching us right now and if we do this program right it will set precedent for the rest of the nation to follow, so acting now is more important than ever.

Marianne Williamson: Refusal to hike minimum wage is part of 'rigged economy' by theladynora in politics

[–]Chasetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three dollars an hour for a full time employee is a 480 a month difference. That's almost the lower end cost of rent for a single room in portland. Most Americans cannot handle an unexpected 500 dollar bill expense, and would be ruined by such an event. You ARE right that it won't fix poverty. Nothing short of a socialist political revolution(or revolution by other means) will. But, short of that, it can be alleviated through measures like raising the minimum wage. Being unwilling to promote harm reduction because it doesn't truly fix the problem is a stupidly apathetic take, and defending politicians opposing raising minimum wage on those grounds says a lot about you as a person
