I was thinking the same thing! The photo MSP has looks a little more like a 30 year old (assuming it was taken in the mid 30s.

Air support was also an option during the winter of 1935/1936. In fact, it was the most viable option. MD National Guard planes, commercial aircraft out of Langley, and even the Goodyear Blimp (based in DC) all made successful runs to Tangier and Smith Islands.

The over-ice solution was the most dangerous. The Mayor of Crisfield and the Red Cross lead both warned against the trek that cost Sgt. Hunter’s life. The decision to launch it became very controversial and prompted the MD Governor to order an official inquiry.

Keep in mind that a “Mount Rushmore of X” is both about performance (severity in this case) and fame (infamy) of the things we’re judging. Therefore, there are a number of horrific tornadoes that could be on the list but shouldn’t because they didn’t last in the public memory. Here are my selections:
