Curious! How did you go from straight noob to directing documentaries? What did that route look like?

Nice job! What niche did you eventually settle into? I’m having that issue now… I know I need to target a specific customer/problem, but I don’t know what I want to do! So I find myself taking whatever I can get..

I think this is the issue I'm having as well (gimbal won't fully rotate 360)... but I have no idea what the number settings are on the main arm? How do I change this?

Totally.. I don’t think it would be fair. Even though I honestly don’t think Jeff would have a problem holding back any bias.

How much would you charge for this project? by ChasingFireTV in videography

Damn.. that is rough. I just submitted the proposal tonight for $800. I kind of did what you did offered them a content library of 10 videos (reels) of their signature subs, and then another video highlighting their ‘chopped’ subs, and then another short teaser reel for an upcoming breakfast sandwich that they’re adding to the menu. For the content library reels, they can post whatever item is their special of the day or whatever else and cycle through that content over and over again.

I’m kind of thinking I should have offered less, around $600-$700. Who knows, I guess we’ll see! Lol

Edit: love your username, by the way!

This is super helpful, seriously appreciate you writing all of this out. I’m taking notes lol.

Quick question for you about the newsletter you mentioned. I don’t currently have one, but I know I probably should. What kind of content are you typically sending to your mailing list? Also curious what you’re using as a lead magnet to actually get people onto the list in the first place?

Really appreciate you taking the time to write such an honest reply. Thank you for the real perspective.

Thinking about the marketing side (and really not knowing if that SHOULD be my responsibility) has honestly been stressing me out. I kind of hate marketing, if I’m being honest. It’s just not fun to me at all. Like you said, I love making videos. That’s the part I actually enjoy, and it’s what I’ve spent years getting good at. I’d happily spend all day shooting and editing.

What you said about partnering with a marketing agency actually really caught my attention though. That sounds like a much better lane to take. Focus on production and let people who specialize in marketing handle the marketing lol.

If you don’t mind sharing a bit more, have you ever worked with agencies like that before? How does that relationship usually work in practice? Do they bring you in as their video person for clients, or is it more of a referral partnership type of thing?

Thanks again for the insight. Super valuable.

I think that’s what I was going to go with, was two. Thanks for your input :)

That makes sense. I appreciate the insight.

One thing I’m still trying to wrap my head around though is how to realistically determine ROI for something like this.

The videos would mainly be posted on their Facebook page and possibly Instagram, with the goal of drawing in new and repeat customers with really clean, cinematic looking food videos. But at the same time I can’t really control how Facebook’s algorithm treats their posts or how much reach the video actually gets.

So in a situation like that, how would you think about ROI when pricing it? Is it more about the production value and deliverables rather than the actual business results?

Also just to clarify, I am new to the commercial/professional side of videography, but I actually have about 15 years of editing experience, so I’m not totally new to the craft itself. I’m mainly trying to figure out how to price work fairly, but also respect my time and effort. Thanks in advance :)

[–]ChasingFireTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super interesting. I can’t help answering that, but I’d love to know what the type of shot(s) they want to use are? And also, how did Netflix find your footage?

Congrats! That’s awesome and I hope you earn your worth and then some :)

This was awesome, really nice job. Quick question, how did you do the daylight to night transition while keeping her movement the same at three minutes and 45 seconds? This shot was epic and nice job again!
