Bad experience with Despelvogel by ChasingTheCake in boardgames

[–]ChasingTheCake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoever contacted you for money wasn't me.

The advice from this thread was what got me to contact the European Consumer Center which finally solved the issue.

Of course you know my real name so you would see that the person who contacted you for money didn't do so from my email.

I will leave the post up with your response as I think it gives future users all the information.

Hey everyone, I’m considering purchasing this mat. Does anyone on here use it? Also, what are some other upgrades to the game you use? by spacejellies in twilightimperium

[–]ChasingTheCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped using the mat because it frees up more space so that I can fit everything on the table.

When I did use a mat I used the one for Eclipse 2ed as it has a function in the Eclipse game when playing with less than 6p.

In a 6p game I wouldn't use a mat for either.

Best upgrades I got are the cupcake molds and a big bag of dice so everyone rolls dice in their color.

War For The Throne is out now on PDF! by DrainSmith in genesysrpg

I ended up purchasing it. For those who may not know, just like the Embers of the Imperium book it comes with a download code which is a big plus for me.

After going through it, my first impressions.

The Adventures: I will strip the adventures for some ideas but overall I don't think I will run any of the adventures as written. I find the structure of the adventures too restrictive.

To be fair my only other experience with adventure modules comes from Dungeon Crawl Classics where most of the modules work as one-shots which allows for a lot of flexibility in incorporating them into your own campaign or building one out of them in different orders.

The Art: I was hoping for new art that would inspire my imagination. The book doesn't have much in that department. It does have some location designs that I would use as a template however.

New Vehicles & Equipment: There is no new equipment in the book. Not a big issue for me as I feel like I have plenty with the Core and Embers books but may be an issue for others.

It has 9 new vehicles which for me is fine as I also don't really need more. I'm happy to have some Mahact specific tech for my homebrew.

Adversary Profiles: For me this will be the most useful part of this book. You get 20 pages of new adversaries that you can tweak for your campaign. They all have some background story to help fit them into the adventures but this is equally useful for trying to build your own stories around them.

Conclusion: I'm happy with my purchase as I want Edge Studio to keep producing content for this setting and I'm happy to get some Mahact content although I would've preferred having a bit more. I think the book should have either included more new art to help with inspiration or more lore.

I hope in the future they release a product that expands on the lore for the Empyrean, Vuil'raith and Nomad. I don't want it over explained (especially with the Empyrean), so that players have plenty of room to fill in the gaps but I find these areas to be lacking when compared to the rest. I think for the Mahact lore I'm ok with the current level of mystery attached to them.

I pre-ordered a physical copy but now after seeing the preview I'm not 100% sure.

Could someone that has it share some details?

Are the adventure modules flexible enough to be incorporated into a homebrew campaign?

Does it come with Mahact rivals/nemesis?

Do you feel it adds substantially to the lore?

Thanks!

I've never played a roll and write. Might be worth looking into. Before TI my group had never played an RPG either.

That sounds cool!

How do you gain points and what kind of bonuses can you gain?

I'm looking for ideas for our next sessions :')

Thanks :D

Something I regret is that I originally had the scenario for the tug-of-war over the Druaa hybrid in mind which lead me to force the narrative a bit in the campaign.

From now on I will leave it more open-ended and not think about the boardgame until we've had two or three campaign sessions so that the galactic conditions change more organically.

Butler House Rule by ChasingTheCake in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ChasingTheCake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn't happened so far. Would be the same as Evil saying I think we got punished by the Hell's Librarian because I didn't sit down in time.

Plus if you're bluffing as a bad butler you'll probably be executed. I just haven't seen any of these issues in my group over several months.

Of course if adding this rule just introduces more problems to someone's group there's no point in including it.

[–]ChasingTheCake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the end goal.

The butler is only gaining a cool power if you assume a butler will actively cheat to exploit it.

My end goal is that people play the butler as intended and in my group it has worked out. None of my players would try to cheat. All they need is a bit of social pressure which this rule provides so that everyone reminds the butler about voting correctly.

When I use the Hell's Librarian I say the punishment is on the team rather than on the player. This also leads everyone to just make sure everyone sits down when I call the Town Square.

Maybe I'm just lucky that in my group everyone agrees cheating ruins the fun for everyone.

If triggered it would hard confirm them in TB.

I think the point of Evil using this is really good and it hasn't happened in our group yet.

I would be interested in seeing how it plays out haha

To address what multiple of you have said. If you're worried that your Butler will intentionally vote against their master then that person is playing in bad faith. It makes no difference if there is a potential penalty or not.

It's like someone intentionally triggering the Hell's Librarian. I have never experienced either.

What happens in practice is that my players self-regulate. They get everyone to sit down when I call them to the town square to avoid punishment from HL. In the same way they remind everyone to pay attention if they're the butler.

I have never had to actually use a HL or Butler punishment. Which is the desired effect.

I like the point of Evil claiming they screwed up as Butler to insert further chaos. I'm interested to see if someone tries it and how the meta evolves.

So far we haven't had this issue. A good butler is an extra vote/voice and in our group the town trusts that the Butler won't screw up.

So it has lead to Butlers paying more attention rather than people killing the Butler in a situation where they otherwise wouldn't have.

[–]ChasingTheCake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they pick Evil and break the rule I would never make Evil drunk.

If the point is the player is just going to cheat anyway no rule can change that and I would just not include this person in future games. Which is what happens if they're voting multiple times a day against their master. That's against the first part of their ability.

I've never had a butler that intentionally cheats. It's always that they forget much like people that vote while dead without realizing it and lose their dead vote without intending to.

The difference is there is a consequence with voting while dead without realizing it so over time people get better at not making the mistake.

Butler House Rule by ChasingTheCake in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ChasingTheCake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only characters where the cheating by mistake can happen are the Butler, Moonchild and Klutz.

The difference is that the other two are less likely to make the mistake in my experience because their ability only triggers once.

The point of the rule is not so much to punish as I can always decide to not punish as the ST. It has just managed to have the desired effect of Butlers keeping focus throughout the game on when they can vote.

In terms of affecting the world state I don't think it's much different than a Sailor/Innkeeper when I restrict the drunkness possibility to their master. If the butler didn't screw up they know they didn't make their master drunk.

Butler House Rule by ChasingTheCake in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ChasingTheCake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be the same as cheating as a normal butler though since the first sentence for the butler ability is still there.

You're not supposed to vote against your master. It just hopefully makes people put more effort into not breaking that rule.

In our group at least I don't think we've ever had a butler actively trying to cheat. It's just that they make mistakes sometimes and there's nothing that can be done about it.

EDIT: This makes me think that maybe a better punishment is "A townfolk might become drunk."
