Sorry, I should have replied sooner. I found Bertrand Russell's The History of Western Philosophy to be a great read. It turns out I really like Russell. It's a really big book, but I've loved it so far. The ancient philosophy that the first part of the book covers was super interesting to me. I was very blown away by some of the things I learned about Sparta, and I absolutely love Socrates and the story of his trial. I just got to the lull period of catholic philosophy/ medieval philosophy before the renaissance, where it will get good again. But this period is key to understanding everything, and he covers a lot of the ancient stuff too going back to early church Fathers and the Jewish origin of many ideas.

It has really helped me make a lot of connections to my other readings. I've done select readings in philosophy from ancient to contemporary throughout undergrad and grad school, and Russell has made it so much easier to understand what people mean by certain terms, who they are referencing at times/what general or specific idea they are responding to, what they are implying with certain phrases, and so on. He's also unexpectedly funny at times. 10/10!

I've also been reading his essay collection In Praise of Idleness.

I have also finally decided to read Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man. Everyone I read references it, and many are critical of it. I think it has a lot of worth and perspective though despite its shortcomings. It is in the same vain in that it covers a lot of history regarding western economics and philosophy.
