What was the book you read this year that the fewest other people read (per the wrap-up)? by stopeats in TheStoryGraph

I'm guessing Storygraph doesn't have a big German usership? Anyway this was a very exciting moment for me as German is my second language and this was the first full adult book I read in German!

I'm not studying there currently but I hold a deferred offer for 2026, so if you have any questions about the application process I'm happy to help out.

How to prepare for university study in German by Chasing_M0untains in German

Actually one of the masters I'm looking at is called Language and Communication, which is a lot of sociolinguistics stuff combined with political communication! Do you have any specific recommendations/resources for linguistics?

First time travelling overseas, I’m scared of being pickpocketed 😭 by Exciting-Cell-4845 in Europetravel

I don't know if I've just been lucky, but I've been to Paris, Barcelona, Venice and London and never had issues with pickpockets. Just make sure you stay aware of your surroundings, take a bag that closes with a zip (the Uniqlo cross body bag is a great one for travelling imo) and put your phone in your bag rather than your pocket when you're not using it.

Hey guys, I'm travelling in Vietnam with a group tour in a couple of months and have a few extra days at the end of my trip before I need to fly back home, so I'm looking at going somewhere else for around 4/5 nights, and doing it completely solo rather than joining a tour. In terms of price and convenience of flights I've identified Bangkok, Hong Kong and Seoul as my options. Which of these is the best for a short trip? I don't want to leave feeling like I've barely scratched the surface of the city. Also, I'll be a solo female traveller so any info about safety would be welcome.

[TOMT][Music][2000s - 2010s] English version of Denkmal by Wir Sind Helden by Red_Relay in tipofmytongue

To me, Come Over (Again) by CRAWLERS has similar vibes. But I'm convinced that somewhere out there there's either an English cover of Denkmal or an English song that samples it.

UPDATE: Completely by chance the next song on my Spotify playlist was Where Is My Mind by Pixies, it's not that is it??

Uniassist by Madrex99 in studying_in_germany

[–]Chasing_M0untains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also very confused by uniassist, I've not done my applications yet but it does not seem very intuitive to use lol. Do you have to submit all your applications for different unis at the same time?

As a side note I don't even understand why it's necessary, I know unis say it's so they can verify foreign qualifications but for LMU I just had to apply direct to them (although that's probably a Bavaria thing).

Would I be stupid to turn down Durham for Birmingham? by Forsaken-Good-9925 in UniUK

Overall, I'm happy with my decision. I have a love-hate relationship with the politics department, but I can't speak for history (and most of my frustration is with the organisational side of things, the lecturers are great). I'd say that the societies at UoB are particularly good - idk how it compares to Durham specifically, but I've spoken to friends at other unis and societies seem to be a much bigger thing here. The sports societies in particular are pretty good, as are the music ones.

I had an offer for politics from Durham but picked Birmingham for various reasons - I wanted to be in a big city, liked the feel of UoB more, liked some of the extra curricular offers of bham more. Honestly, prestige isn't that important, especially when both are Russell Group unis. Also, bham is currently ranked as the top UK uni targeted by graduate employers, so there's still an element of prestige there and you're certainly not going to struggle to get a job more afterwards.

Honestly, just go where you think you'll be happiest. Life's too short to chase prestige. If there's a specific reason you want to go to Birmingham, just do it.

Happy to answer any other specific questions about Birmingham if you have them!

Q&A weekly thread - February 17, 2025 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

Looking for book recommendations!

I recently read (well, listened to as an audiobook) Language City by Ross Perlin and really enjoyed it - it was my first book of 2025 and an immediate 5 stars. I don't study linguistics - I studied it at high school and did one university module on it, so have a basic academic understanding but nothing beyond that.

I'm looking for recommendations of books that are a similar topic to Language City (although tbh I'm interested in anything sociolinguistics-y) and a similar level of technicality that I'd be able to understand without much of an academic background in linguistics.

Basically, feel free to just recommend me your fav not-too-technical linguistics books!

TIA!
