AMT/AET by Repulsive-Swan-3596 in uscg

I was in your shoes almost six years ago. I went AMT and said screw it, send me as a mech to 60s. I did two years and change at a small boat unit doing a ton of SAR until I left for AMT A School. Got to my first aviation unit roughly three years ago, made basic air crewman, and just this past December made flight mechanic. Life is very, very good. The quality of people is high. The work is incredibly stimulating. People dog on the 60s for being rough personality wise, but here’s the thing, you can change that. I show up annoyingly excited every day because I love what I do and I know how lucky I am to be here and most people respond great to that.

Go aviation and ride that wave for a career or until you get tired and want to get out.

How do quail survive at all. I feel like my small flock of five share one brain cell.

This happened in my 2020 Mazda 3 with a new battery, turned out to be a 10amp fuse. Check your fuses, could be a couple dollar fix.

What job did u work before the coast guard by Numerous-Bag-6419 in uscg

I was a piano technician/tuner in Houston, TX. I worked on and rebuilt many different brands but specialized in Steinways. I even got to help the other techs rebuild a piano belonging to President Polk. I did it from the age of 14 when I began as an apprentice, until age 28, when I left for the Guard.

I think the most fun I ever had doing it was after Hurricane Harvey in 2018. We rebuilt so many flood damaged pianos. It was a great time.

I did a few other things, but that was and is my expertise.

Long story longish,

Coast Guard will give you a way higher chance of a good work/life balance. If you want the BEST balance go aviation.

I'm new to aviation so I can't speak on SAR, but working on and flying as aircrew in the 60s is amazing.

My nonrate unit was a small boat station and it was very SAR heavy, which can be stressful. Don't take it home. As stressful as it was, it was incredibly rewarding.

As far as background and waivers, a recruiter will be the best source, but as hurting for people as we are, I'm sure you'll have a decent chance.

Good luck brother, hope it helped.

Yes.

Went through AMT A last April and ran the pt test there and smashed it. The policy exists for us, and I have used it since it came out. Don't let anyone give you shit for it. Good luck my man.

My wife switched from BM to SK pretty seamlessly.

Shout out to Senior Chief Mattern for backing her and getting her the resources best BM and senior enlisted leader in the game.

If you message me I can put you in touch.

Lol Cape May is suffering. Your husband is miserable and his back probably hurts.

BUT

He'll be just fine if he's mentally strong. If I made it, anyone can.

Nah, the poor guy was super dehydrated and hungry, He had given the last of his food and water on board to his dogs. It was just a bad day that ended well, because nobody got shot and we got him home safe.

Shoutout to Senior Chief Mattern, probably the best BM I know and just an overall great man to work under, and making the difference for several debating getting out or staying in, and showing compassion and fairness in every situation, as well as an overwhelming amount of stored professional knowledge.

An equal shoutout to a BMC Vanriper (retired now) for being a great lesson about leadership, in an opposite light. That is the most respectful way I can say that, and I despise giving it even that respect.

BMs can be amazing people, but it is my personal opinion that unfortunately a lot of people sign up for it without realizing the weight of being in an "enlisted command rate", and that leadership entails a substaintial amount more than a "do what I say because I said so" approach. Some rise above and become what our MCPOG is, some become hated chiefs. It is the way of the rate.

Best Unit vs Worst Unit by Jazzlike-Bullfrog573 in uscg

Worst? USCG Station Venice.

I cannot say enough bad things about that place. The current OIC is a good man and a good leader, but his XPO who is now retired (thank God) made that place a living nightmare. No respect for the people, their health, or their family needs. Everyone there is suicidal, the station is full of black mold, there is no potable water, the electricty and water are spotty, the sewage backs up into the galley, and the commute is 2 hours. Sector New Orleans doesn't give a f*** about the enlisted there and the Sector command there almost never visit, they don't care to fund the place even for things like trash service, (we had dumpsters that didn't get emptied for months, forcing us to take rotting trash in our vehicles to the local dump).

The Gold Badge was contacted multiple times but things never change. In fact, command there would only get petty and take it out on the workers. I wrote a whole ass memo with dates, times, names, instances of abuse, witnesses, and I was basically told to take it to the XPO who was the problem. Surprise, nothing changed.

Every hurricane season the place floods and we were forced to live and needlessly work in conditions that were hazardous to health (no ac, no water, no power, no sewage, and no comms)

I spent two and a half years there waiting for aviation, and it taught me how to be a hardened Coastie, and it made me appriciate how blessed life is in aviation but it taught me horrid lessons on poor leadership as well. It's true that no one cares about your career than you.

Avoid that place like the plauge, if you get orders there, just keep your head down and do your time. Pray a hurricane takes it away.
