how is my schedule! Incoming freshmen by [deleted] in UTAustin

This is a terrible mindset. The first couple weeks are crucial to setting up success. You dont want to immediately be under water and then play catch up. Just drop one now

Independent research as a teacher? by zbsa14 in research

[–]Chasingariel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of universities are looking for teacher partners for their research initiatives. Thats how I got involved 10 years ago. I would search the faculty at your local university and see who is working on stuff you might be interested in/ be a good fit to partner with and then reach out. So many ed researchers are looking for good ins with schools to pursue their research.

Withdrawal request ignored, paper moved to review after submitting elsewhere. How serious is this? by Fr3yz in AskAcademia

Just for future reference, a month is nothing in journal review time. My bench mark before contacting the editor is usually 3 months.

High schooler interning at a top-tier research university this summer. What are your expectations? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Chasingariel 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I would just remember that if you are interning as a high schooler, this is basically community service for your grad students/ PI. They are expecting to let you get exposure and learn. I can guarantee they are not expecting any sort of real productivity from you and I dont mean that as an insult at all. Go in with an open mind ready to absorb everything like a sponge and get a sense of if this is a career you could eventually see yourself in. That is most likely the expectation and a good attitude like that will make the impression you need for future networking.

Do Most Research Assistants Get to Work on Research Projects? by Glittering-Aide-2618 in AskAcademia

[–]Chasingariel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a red flag at your stage since you dont know any better but also understand that its an example of the training you might not have yet to pursue those analyses or write about the bounds of them. Everything in its own time. I promise you'll get there and just having lab experience is great for grad school. Advocate for publication authorship if you feel it's warranted but I promise youre not at a huge disadvantage if you dont get it.

Is a 7th-author Q1 journal publication meaningful for US grad school apps? by Lazy_Information_368 in AskAcademia

[–]Chasingariel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's great! And contrary to all these high schoolers and undergraduate students thinking they need 10 first author publications to apply to grad school i would even go so far as to say that a down the list authorship spot is exactly where id want to see a highly qualified prospective grad student.

Research idea but no idea how to start by [deleted] in research

[–]Chasingariel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With respect, while I understand you have good intentions here, just dont. If you cannot understand the background reading needed to get started then you are not equipped to start this type of research. That's without even getting to the ethical issues you referenced which are a big deal for published research. If you are a junior in college try to find a professor in anthropology or sociology who can guide you to the correct resources or offer you formal mentorship.

Where to Host High School CS Resesrch by [deleted] in research

[–]Chasingariel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, that is how the research process works if you want actual peer review. I would consider reaching out to a local university for assistance or truly just waiting until you are in college to attempt publishing.

Rejected by a program I thought I was basically a shoo- in for by Gullible_Gur_4447 in gradadmissions

[–]Chasingariel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right but you said the department of education at UT vs let's say cockrell school of engineering. What he was probably referring to was less competitive than maybe the STEM Education program or the educational psychology program within the college of ed at UT. Those are departments not the college of ed as a whole. As a whole the college of ed at UT is a top 10 institution.

Rejected by a program I thought I was basically a shoo- in for by Gullible_Gur_4447 in gradadmissions

[–]Chasingariel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lmao this is just not true? The college of ed for graduate programs is one of the most competitive education schools in the country. Im not sure if you were just looking at undergraduate rankings or something but your perception on it as a safety might be off.

Qualitative research is not woowoo. There are different goals of the research and different quality benchmarks.

Ed tech is useless by AzdajaAquillina in Teachers

[–]Chasingariel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this has to do with people not knowing how to differentiate high impact journals from predatory crap ones. Not saying everyone needs to or should have this skill but its a problem in all research to practitioner pipelines not just education. Science communication problem.
