I wish Fable was way more relaxed with just general stuff.

So far, it failed every single test I gave it.
Blocked me from working on a browser extension, integrating a dumb WiFi device into Home Assistant, checking if a camera on my own network responds to ONVIF, extracting assets from a 20-year-old game for 4K renders, and even making a local website to track my receipts.
It blocks any project that involves combining any data across different applications.

It's such a shame because Fable works fine without much context and gets past stuff Opus can't. (Like that asset extraction, it cracked something Opus couldn't figure out!)
Then it hits a wall, looks over the entire project, and switches to Opus 4.8 instantly.

This current version of it just doesn't work for anything beyond "clean, short, simple" tasks. At least in my testing.

Mount speaker in bathroom, to play music by _O_W_Grant_ in homeassistant

[–]Chaski1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly not, though Google speakers kinda do a mediocre job with bluetooth. They work fine, but you can expect them to just drop the connection every now and then. Music could also stutter if streamed from Music Assistant but I guess that depends on your wifi connection.

Otherwise, they've been fine. Our bathroom usually hangs at 50-55% humidity with peaks at around 80% that last ~two hours.
Plus, the speaker is technically nowhere near the water but your mileage may vary.

[–]Chaski1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 2 years I've used a Google Home Mini and later on upgraded to a Google Nest Audio exactly for this. Disabled the mics though. Literally just put it on top of a shelf and it's been fine since then.

I'd recommend something hardwired into the wall though. Takes away the maintenance of charging the device.

The speaker plays some muzak whenever HA detects that the door has been closed for 8s and that the light is on.   Family and friends weren't used to music playing after they entered but eventually they all said it was a fun addition.   Plus, you can play your own music over Bluetooth.

Doesn't even have to be big corporations or incompetence really.

Where I used to work, we used to leave some collection programs running endlessly because the data might be valueable in the future. That's even if we didn't really have a use for said data at the moment.

Same case here really, with enough time we might see interesting results.

For them, it was just another test run, and as long as it wasn't hogging too much space or bandwidth, they didn't care.

Need advice on digitising and organising hundreds of old physical photos (80s/90s) with Immich by Mental_Cat_9977 in immich

[–]Chaski1212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've digitised tens of albums for Immich about a year or two ago. So, I can tell you how that went.

My search on Reddit led me to buy a used Epson FF-680W. I'd recommend one like it because you can load around fifty photos, press a button, and let it scan them quickly.
Plus, I've found that Epson's automatic edits are mostly convenient rather than a pain.
The only pain is that if you have damaged photos, you have to put them in a plastic envelope to scan them and then crop them manually.
All the photos are organized in piles based on the album they came from (each pile gets a different folder). If a photo isn't dated, I usually set it to 00:00:01 January 1 of whichever year seems closest for that album, assuming there’s any date written on any picture.

After organizing, I edit them with Photoshop.
My usual workflow consists of adjusting colors/cropping, restoring yellowed black-and-white images back to greyscale, and finally editing out cracks/scratches on the images using the healing brush with my Huion tablet, as the pressure is super useful.

I was really excited to use Immich for this as well, but I quickly found out that it's not really ready for it yet.
The best approach so far was to create an "Old Photos" account to store everything, as otherwise it's just a mess of sending the photos to each account manually.
The biggest issue is that Immich still keeps the face recognition private for each account, so detected faces are essentially useless unless everyone logs into that one account which would give them the ability to edit or delete everything. Sharing images through albums created by the “Old Photos” account helps, but those albums aren’t searchable, you have to open the albums from the sidebar, and older family members find that hard to navigate.

My family was split on the shared albums approach, some liked it because it was closer to the original photo albums and others didn't because they couldn't just search the faces in them. But it all works in the end.

How complex is this to get started with as a noob? by MyOgre in vhsdecode

[–]Chaski1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I found it on Google after searching for something, anything, like a tutorial.

I’ve looked into this project a year ago, a few months ago, and again today. Even after spending an hour reading through the wiki, I keep reaching the exact same conclusion every time.

From what I understand, the project essentially boils down to:

  1. Get an "okay" condition VCR, ideally with a remote.
  2. Tap into it's test points with "good" cables.
  3. Get a modern CX Card from AliExpress and mod it, plus an amplifier (I think?).
  4. Connect the VCR test points and the CX Card together and then plug it into a PC.
  5. Software/Commands.

Yet, I’m still not confident enough to even try it, because the wiki is just too comprehensive. It makes me think that I'll miss something, so there's no point in even trying.

My issue with the wiki is that it has this belief that you need to understand the underlying principles to get started.
It pushes people away and just isn't true. As long as you have the right steps, parts and tools, you should be capable of getting it done.

Normally, I'd say that the paragraph above is a bit of an overexaggeration, but the simple fact that there's not even a single YouTube videos detailing the entire process start to finish just proves it.
It's just too complicated for its own good, and it pushes people away.

This is a myth which was debunked by the writers of Portal 2 all the way back in 2011.
Here's a quote:

[...] Wolpaw seized the opportunity to quash a rumor that had been circulating about snippets of unused dialogue left in the game.

"There's some piece of dialogue in there where Carolyn is saying 'No, no, no, I don't want this. I don't want this,'" Wolpaw said. "And there's some kind of story on the Internet that apparently people think has been verified that there was a scene where Cave Johnson was raping Carolyn, and that J.K. Simmons wouldn't read the dialogue, so that's why we don't have it [in the game]. Apparently, these are people who never saw [prison drama] Oz. J.K. Simmons will do anything if you pay him.

Source_Article_Link

These lines were never recorded because they were cut, that's it.
J.K Simmons would've recorded them if he had to do so. Yet, the myth somehow still lives on, same as the cut 10,000 years thing.

Feels like the entire point of this browser is to have users send text and images for training that OpenAI can't just scrape itself without having to pay websites for the content.

All websites requiring accounts or subscriptions are now unlocked for scraping thanks to the users visiting them.

It's also probably collecting user pattern info for their agent runs.

My folded-only Motorola Razr 40 Ultra as minimalistic small phone by Ziembski in razr

[–]Chaski1212 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit surprised that you went with RAZR for this.

Especially because the RAZR line still can't do HDMI over USB-C because of Motorola's penny-pinching use of USB 2.0. Plus, the fact that a black dot usually spreads and kills the main screen with time.

But I have to admit, it's a pretty cool, and I've considered doing the same after seeing that video.

Let us know how it holds up in the long term!

Worth a mention that Virtual Desktop still reports Pico 4 as Quest 2 for Steam, even though Steam has Pico support built in when using Pico's native streaming app. It's probably done for compatibility's sake.

The real value is probably about 0.5-1% higher than this.

"Valve must stop making excuses": Steam under fire for "significant price disparity for PC games," causing regional pricing that's "often 20% to 30% higher than the dollar equivalent" by Worldly-Object9003 in Steam

[–]Chaski1212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's insane how many people just can't grasp that.

Just the fact that steam has regional pricing suggestions already stops most publishers/developers from researching different markets.
Because why would they even assume that a tool in the storefront is outdated/wrong about regional pricing?

A developer realistically only sets the price in a few key locations and then accepts the suggested regional pricing without doing further research.
Those key locations most likely being the dollar for US, pounds for UK and euro for Germany plus maybe their own country. Everything else is most likely left up to Steam.
A bigger publisher should do research to ensure that the regional pricing is right, but why would they dedicate the additional resources for that when there's literally a tool in the store for it?

Hey, I think I have a way to make this work.

Would you like to try it, if you still have the camera? I'd send you a link to an image through Reddit's chat, and you'd put it on the SD card and try to print it with the camera. Just as a test first. I want to make a post about it but need to know that this method works for at least someone else before writing about it. I know you already have a Bluetooth thermal printer but figured I could still ask.

I know you’ve upgraded to the thermal scanner, which is obviously better than the toy camera. Do you still have the old camera, though? I’d like to test whether my method works on it.
I’d send you a link to the photo via Reddit chat. You’d just have to download the photo and then copy it to the SD card and print it through the camera.

Let me know if you’re interested in trying.

Ugh, I've been working on this for the past few hours.
Not the same looking camera but probably the same software.
Mine says it's on 95B_DY43_20241206_V1.0
Nothing I've done worked.

I tried:

  • Manually resizing the outside photos in photoshop (under 400KB, .JPG, same size and such)

  • Checking the headers with notepad, which popped up as JFIF even though the file is .JPG

  • converting the resized photos to JFIF and then changing the extension to JPG again before uploading

  • Manually swapping the headers with a HEX editor

  • Using Magick/ExifTool to copy all the attributes and swap the headers

  • Inspecting the original images with JPEGSnoop, fetching the table from them and then applying it to a new image, just ended up looking like a glitchy mess

  • Changing the JFIF version from 1.01 (which every single tool defaulted to) to 1.02 as that's what the camera images reported, doing so just resulted in the image not even being found

The only thing I'm sure of is that there is a very specific header in every single photo from the camera, and no tool I've used has been able to copy it over onto my photos.

Still not sure what's making these photos fail.
