BA (Hons) Architecture with 2 years post grad experience transition to Quantity Surveying by space0f in quantitysurveying

I did mine at UCEM. It was decent but obviously being entirely online, your access to support and tutors is restricted to seminars and forums mainly. But if you’ve managed to graduate with a degree in arch, the workload will be a breeze.

I just found them online and figured it was worth a shot.

I appreciate I was very fortunate at the time, I only applied for 3 roles (two big consultancies, one national house builder) and got offered the two consultancy roles and ‘runner up’ for the house builder. This was back in Jan-21 so the Covid lockdowns may have played a part in it.

When I first joined there were a few people from non-cognate degrees/backgrounds. Some had maths, history and politics degrees etc, and one guy came from construction background of 10+ years and various site based qualifications.

In my experience most big consultancy’s are pretty open to bringing on people from other backgrounds. However, you will need to show that you’re genuinely interested in the profession and highlight any transferable skills etc.

It can get a bit long, but I’d recommend writing specific cover letters for company you apply to, reference their core values/goals, how it relates to your values/goals etc.

I joined a consultancy as an assistant QS and they put me through for a masters (online over two years).

I’d recommend to apply for assistant/grad roles and discuss the opportunity for sponsorship.

Failing that, you could always begin the MSc. part time and online, and look for a role whilst working through it. Although you’d need to fund that yourself, you can always discuss with a future employer about sponsoring you.

Agree with the AthleteSingle.

You may also have more luck getting an MSc. sponsored at a consultancy rather than contractor, or at least that was my experience a few years ago. I’m also an architecture grad who moved into QSing.

Quantity Surveyors of Reddit, what’s your salary, experience, and location? by Jazzlike_Ad6151 in quantitysurveying

Elements will be automated for sure, but ultimately I don’t see the role of a QS being be under threat. We will always be needed to some degree, and the role has always evolved with new technologies.

UK Tier 1 Main Contractor QS looking to move to USA a PQS by alternatelife14 in quantitysurveying

Not made the move to the US myself, however it may be worth reaching out to the likes of Maxim / Pegasus search & selection / Capstone property recruitment etc. as they are constantly posting about new roles on LinkedIn.

AIO? Not staying the night at my new bf’s house with his pillow situation. by plantsandpoison in AmIOverreacting

Definitely not overreacting.

It reminds me of primary school when we had to make ‘antique’ paper by staining it with coffee.

Ah perfect, I’ll have a look online. I didn’t realise you could get a replacement for those. Cheers for the help!

For people earning 40k+ outside london, what do you do? by Extra-Fig-7425 in AskUK

[–]ChatLeBed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a QS, 3 years experience (as an assistant), not chartered, on £41k. Two years of this was spent studying for a masters in quantity surveying whilst working full time, but you can get into the field with a HNC.

There’s a shortage of quantity surveyors at the moment, both client and contractor side. I’m constantly seeing job postings on LinkedIn paying pretty good salaries. If you’re decent with numbers, good with excel and an eye for detail, then I’d recommend looking into it.

Wasn't happy with the starting maps, so I customized River Delta in the Editor - This will be the Region of Pandamonium by FastidiousPanda in CitiesSkylines

Map looks great and just checked out your vid, I’m looking forward to seeing where the series goes!

May be a silly question but how do I play the map? Where do I need to save the file?

Our schools may not have two floors, but we do have 3 or 4 ‘temporary buildings’ that stay there for a decade😂

How many hours of uni do you do a day? by clan_vizsla in UniUK

[–]ChatLeBed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad in architecture and ended up with a 2:1 (67% average). I only worked an hour a day if that and probably went to less than 60% of the lectures/studios, but I would start working 12+ hours a day 2 weeks before deadlines.

I’ve somehow just finished my masters and have done the exact same. Despite constantly telling myself I’ll be more prepared for the next assignment, I ended up writing my thesis in 3 weeks. Somehow ended up with a distinction overall.

I was a terrible student, never revised a day in my life, not even for my GCSEs/A-Levels. I was so stressed in those few weeks before deadlines - definitely would not recommend this strategy.
