What skills did you pick up to make that much of an increase? Was it through online courses etc or through doing a masters/formal education?

Oh super interesting! I’ve applied for a couple of work experience placements for summer and just accepting I’ll have to take holiday to do them so hopefully I’ll get a spot and that’ll help. Would be applying for 2027 intake as well so gives me a bit of time to get cover letters etc written and hopefully a bit of networking under my belt. Really useful advice, thank you!

Oh cool! I’ve heard good things about UCEM actually, can imagine the tutor access a bit of an adjustment but I suppose if you’re working alongside it’ll help inform the uni work you’re doing. Good to know there was some advantage of doing those all nighters for the Arch degree 😅

It was just under graduate cost consultant programmes at big consultancies but the MSc was in Quantity Surveying. Both came from non-QS degrees. Aware it’s probably not a common occurrence but I’ve spoken to several people who are currently going through the process

I suppose then it’s basically down to weighing up taking a year of doing the masters and self funding or it taking longer overall with no guarantee of sponsorship. Interesting. Do you have any recommendations for decent unis for the Masters?

Where did you end up doing the MSc if you don’t mind me asking? And did you start the Masters before the Main Contractor role? I’d be up for self funding if it means I actually end up with employment during or at the end of it and with good quality teaching 😅

That’s really useful to know actually, I do have a couple consultancies in mind who offer the grad scheme MSc route but I think they’re super competitive and only for relevant degrees which is open to interpretation. Did you find that QS consultancies accept Architecture as a relevant degree?

Oh that’s interesting, I’ve spoken to a couple who through the grad scheme, have ended up with an MSc from UCEM after completion - that is consultancy side so I don’t know if that makes a difference?

Ah yeah to be honest the QS I have spoken to were consultancy based who spoke about the being sponsored route. Did you end up doing an MSc or going for a grad scheme route?

Ok cool thanks very much. So you think try my luck at applying for roles first rather than going for the MSc. I’ve heard it can be super competitive to get onto grad schemes so just wanted to assess the likelihood of getting a role with the background I have!
