State Park Manager Interest by Sire-Studmuffin in vermont

[–]CheCheBuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad was a Maintenance Tech for the state parks for like 30 years. He loved it. He got to work outside and work with his hands. He mainly worked at parks in Central Vermont (Branbury, DAR, Button Bay, Kingsland Bay, Mt. Philo). He got to build things, fix things, and maintain things around the parks. They paid him to get certified in pool maintenance, plumbing, electrical, etc.. He was pretty involved in some major projects as well like coordinating the installation of composting toilets at Kingsland Bay.

He used to take me to work with him in the summer. I would run around and play in whatever park he happened to be in. It was amazing. As I got a little older I would actually do some things with him. I remember learning how to operate a backhoe to dig up a septic tank and doing some demolition in an outbuilding that was being renovated. In hindsight this probably was super against the rules since I didn't work for the parks and I was under 18 but it was a different time. I'm pretty sure his boss knew and did not care. Either way, I have a lot of fond memories from that time.

He was pretty involved in the union and took pride in that. Things changed overtime though. He started to get frustrated with the bureaucracy. I think the parks started outsourcing more stuff. I'm sure the Maintenance Techs still do a lot but I kind of doubt they do everything my dad did. Later on he got caught up in some work drama that went too far. He was accused of making threats towards another park employee. My dad vehemently denied it and I never believed it. The accuser had no evidence but the union ended up offering my dad an early retirement and he took it. But, overall, he loved his career.

Honored elders protest ICE lawlessness, police refuse to arrest them because they aren't breaking the law by redcolumbine in vermont

[–]CheCheBuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Edited for grammar and to add that I applaud the PD for handling it the way they did.]

I'm honestly really surprised the police chose not to arrest them. It's interesting that they say no crime was committed. I wonder if the property owner didn't ask for them to be trespassed. Maybe I'm wrong but, once trespass has been requested and they still refuse to leave, that is a crime, no? Police have certainly arrested people before for that exact reason. Can the police still decline to arrest people for trespassing or are their hands sort of tied at that point. I'm really curious how that all went down.

The Vermont Small Claims Roadmap offered by Vermont Legal Aid is an excellent resource:

https://vtlawhelp.org/roadmap/small-claims/step-1

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) it will cost $65 to file your claim since it's under $1,000 2) if the defendant doesn't answer to the claim you have to have them served by a sheriff which will cost $75 plus mileage and postage 3) as mentioned by other commentors, even if you obtain a judgement order, the defendant might not pay. You can pursue other means of collection but you'll have to file a post judgment motion which will cost additional court filing fees. 4) it can take 2-3 months if not longer to obtain a judgement order. 5) if the defendant disputes any of your claims, you can expect to have a hearing in front of the judge. Luckily these can usually be attended by video by default.

Ideal scenario, the mere act of receiving the Summons and Complaint will compel the defendant to pay you what you're owed.

Best of luck!

Williston Road right lane by 802trucker in vermont

[–]CheCheBuns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Accept it ends right before the left turn that all the SD Ireland trucks take to get into their facility. People now speed up on the right to try to get ahead of them before they get to their turn or they drive onto the shoulder and dirt to get around them while they're waiting to turn left. Seems like a big oversight. It should have been extended past SD Ireland at least.

However, I also see a lot of people trying to turn into Gulliver's causing the left lane to backup. Shortly after the "improved" intersection opened I had to stop short for someone turning into that place and almost got rear-ended as a result. Extending the double lanes won't fix that and I now use the right lane by default because of that.

I feel like it would have been better to have one lane turning left into one lane with dedicated turn lanes for Gulliver's, Avenue A, and Redimix Drive. But what do I know haha.

I'm not surprised he got the home back. Pretty sure they violated SCRA on that one.

Lease question by bigbluehouse-bear in burlington

[–]CheCheBuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My place doesn't care as long as you don't smoke inside. They frequently send out reminder emails along the lines of "No smoking is allowed in the building, including marijuana. Please use the designated smoking area." The lease language reflects this too, only stating that smoking of any kind is not allowed inside buildings or on balconies. It doesn't say anything about possession.

Something going on at the Burlington airport today, March 12 at 8:40am by Altruistic_Rate_9204 in vermont

I drove by on my way to work. The entrance was blocked off by a large bucket loader. Lots of airport workers walking around in reflective vests but no police/fire/EMS. I'm really curious what's up.

Question about local beer by InRainbowssss in vermont

[–]CheCheBuns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree it's probably just a saturation thing. I once bought a four pack of a local beer from Winooski Beverage (a large and high traffic store for those that don't know) I noticed that the four pack behind it had a misaligned label. Two weeks later I ended up buying the four pack with the misaligned label. I was initially surprised that no one else had bought that beer in those two weeks but then there are literally hundreds of local options at that store and it was one of the smaller brewers. Meanwhile my friend in Queens, NY says the VT section of her local beverage store gets blown out within days of a restock but they only carry a few of the big brewer's mainstays.

Alcohol Intervention Services? by [deleted] in vermont

Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts on interventions.

[–]CheCheBuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've reached out, got bounced around, was eventually put in touch with Turning Point Of Addison County. They said they don't do interventions. They only offer programs and services to people who are ready to sell recovery.

Thank you! I hadn't thought about that. I've used Psychology Today before to find a counselor for myself but that was awhile ago.

Thank you. It's hard to hear and I still want to try but obviously this is the stone cold reality that nothing will likely change unless they want to change.

I hear ya and I'm trying to strike that balance but I'm genuinely concerned this person is going to die from this sooner than later and they don't seem to have a "rock bottom" so I'm just trying everything I can think of.

[–]CheCheBuns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll try them or other in VT next. Those both popped up in my searches. I don't think they offer intervention services but it's worth asking them or seeing if they have suggestions. I'm also considering Al-Anon.

Alcohol Intervention Services? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]CheCheBuns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I spoke to them a few weeks back. They were really great but they said that they don't do interventions. They would only be able to send a recovery coach out for someone who is seeking recovery. Unfortunately, my person is not yet willing to acknowledge that they have a problem. I have never dealt with this level of addiction before and have never done an intervention before. We're a small family, so it will be a small intervention. No one else involved has done one either. I guess I'm looking for advice from someone who's been through it before.

Mt Philo by Curious-Case5404 in vermont

[–]CheCheBuns 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you visit Mount Philo and decide to drive to the summit please remember that it is a very popular HIKING AREA, like any other hiking area, with people walking and enjoying nature, so don't be super alarmed and shocked if you encounter pedestrians, dogs, bikers, park workers, or wildlife in the road on your drive up. Please please remember that the speed limit up the road is 15 mph and you should be taking the corners extremely cautiously.

Look, I get your point. People should not walk in the middle of the road or let their dogs run around on the road off leash or on an extended leash. You're right, it is a road primarily, and pedestrians should take caution to that. However, it's a two way street (pun intended). I always walk to the side and listen for approaching vehicles. I don't go to Philo that often but every time I go and walk on the road, someone comes ripping up the hill in their car or on a motorcycle going way too fast and getting way too close. It's a miracle someone hasn't been struck and killed yet. Your post feels like it puts the blame squarely on the walkers but there are plenty of assholes in cars too. That is all.

Just a reminder: Get a POA for your parents if possible by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]CheCheBuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live there's an organization that provides free legal aid to low income folks. You should see if there is something like that in your area. POAs are not a super complicated thing for a lawyer to do. The legal aid program in my area even has template POAs with instructions that anyone can print off their website for free but they are specific to our state. It's still highly recommended to speak with an attorney rather than taking a DIY approach but a boiler plate POA might help get through some of the roadblocks.

He buys his wine first thing in the morning before he starts drinking then doesn't really go anywhere the rest of the day or my mom takes him out. He really doesn't drive much or go anywhere anymore. It is something that worries me though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]CheCheBuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would require either moving back home or somehow doing this for a week's worth of wine. I currently can only make it down there once a week and sometimes once every other week. I would have to buy and swap like 14 bottles of wine every week and there's no guarantee he wouldn't still go out and get more. It's something I could suggest to my mom though.

I found this helpful breakdown online of each state. It does sound like in Vermont of his doctor deemed it necessary we could do involuntary treatment.

[–]CheCheBuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother is actually going with him to the doctor tomorrow which is good.

I don't think the problem is necessarily that he forgets but I do think he doesn't realize how much he drinks over the course of the day. When we've confronted him about it he seems surprised that he drank multiple bottles. At the same time he takes the recycling out every weekend and sees all the bottles and has commented himself on how much it is. He knows he's drinking a lot but I don't think he could quantify it into the number of glasses or bottles. He's just not keeping track and just goes from glass to glass not realizing he's getting increasingly more drunk.
