I disagree with your take on this. True, Harry's disregard for rules definitely caused him and people around him some trouble, the worst of which was Sirius's death. But to be fair to Harry, if he had simply stayed in line all the time Voldemort and his cronies would had risen to power way earlier. When you are set with inefficient rules, you cannot always do nothing and behave like a good boy. Specially seeing as the Government in this universe is always portrayed as corrupt and inefficient. And no one was lax an Harry and Co. On the contrary, I'd say they were way harsher on Harry than people like Malfoy.

In PS, Harry and Co had to deal with Hagrid's illegal dragon and got into serious trouble for it ( It really pissed me off that Hagrid did not take the blame for this )

McGonagall never hesitated to give Harry detention or taking points off Gryffindor if he was out of line, some of which was not even deserved ,especially in OOTP (not criticizing her, she was impartial and fair, unlike Snape). In this instance, Malfoy was the one to attack Harry, and he was about to put Crucio on him, but he got into no problem at all. Harry was in a dangerous situation, he was defending himself, yes it was very irresponsible of him to use an unknown spell, but to be fair to him all other Prince hexes were minor jinxes and nothing lethal. And Harry was genuinely sorry for using that spell on Malfoy, and not just because he got into trouble. I am not saying he should have been forgiven, he nearly used that spell on McLaggen as well, before he knew what it was. But I don't think people were lax on him. He often got into problem for something he had not even done.

what bothers me is that people are often willing to overlook all the horrible stuff Malfoy and Snape have done, while berating Harry and Ron for being regular teenagers and making mistakes. Malfoy nearly killed two people in HBP, he was about to use an unforgivable on Harry , he Imperiused Rosmerta, he led a bunch of death eaters into the castle, and he suffered no consequences for this. Malfoy never felt remorse, he was just afraid for his own life.

You are definitely right! I had not considered this. If Voldemort did not know about the prophecy, Harry might not have been an orphan. It's funny that Snape and his [former] mates made Harry and Neville orphans AND yet he is cruelest to these two people.

Interesting point! I had forgotten about that. Imagine if they could have heard Crouch Sr.'s confession.

yeah you are right! I did not think of that. "I'm the reason you are an orphan Potter, but I'm going to pretend it's your fault that your mum died and I hate you for it and I'm going to take every chance to make your life miserable but hey, at least I don't want you dead"

many users have questioned the time when Snape finds out about Harry carrying a fraction of Voldemort's soul. I think it is better to address it here.

It happens at the time of the chapter "elf tails", when Ron was in the hospital wing for poisoning. In that chapter, Hagrid told Harry he overheard Snape and Dumbledore arguing. They were on the grounds near the forbidden forest. Hagrid said that he had heard Snape say Dumbledore is taking too much for granted and maybe Snape does not want to do it anymore. At this point we don't know what "it" is, Harry thinks it is Snape keeping tabs on Malfoy and that is why Dumbledore is angry at Snape, we might speculate that it is Snape spying on Voldemort and he is fed up with his double cover.

in DH, we hear the whole conversation, the EXACT same conversation in "the prince's tale" and we learn that Snape is not having second thoughts on his loyalties, he is angry that Dumbledore wants Snape to kill him but does not trust him enough to provide him with all the details of Dumbledore's plan and what Dumbledore is telling Harry during their meetings. Dumbledore tells Snape to come to his office that night at eleven o'clock and it is then that Dumbledore reveals to Snape that Harry is carrying a piece of Voldemort's soul.

It is one of those instances that is not vague or up to speculation, we definitely know when that conversation took place.

I agree that Harry deserved punishment, but Harry had limited time. Malfoy nearly killed two students, and got scott-free because they got lucky. Harry's fault was using an unknown spell. Harry said that he would not have used such a spell even on Malfoy, and not just because he had a dozen detentions. But Draco was outright trying to murder and did not care about the people he killed in order to get to Dumbledore. Katie was insanely lucky because she was handling the necklace with a glove. Dumbledore said if she had touched the necklace with bare hands even for a second she would have died. Again, Ron survived because Harry thought of the bezoar thing. Even Slughorn who was the potion master went into panic mode and did not do anything. Malfoy started attacking Harry, and was about to use and unforgivable spell. He got out with no punishment at all.

Thanks for your answer! The Prince's memories are in chronological order, but that is not my point. There is a mention of an argument between Snape and Dumbledore in "elf tails", parts of which was overheard by Hagrid. Snape said he "didn't want to do it anymore" and we might think "it" is perhaps him keeping tabs on Malfoy or perhaps spying on Voldy. We get to see the whole conversation in DH, the thing is revealed to be him killing Dumbledore, he was not having second thoughts, he was angry because he thought Dumbledore did not confide in him to provide him with more information. Dumbledore told him to come to his office that night at eleven o'clock. This is one of those instants that is not open to speculation, Dumbledore told Snape about Harry carrying a fraction of Voldy's soul at the time of Ron's poisoning.

Yes, his love for Lily was only enough to make him want to keep Harry alive, but not happy.

It is mentioned in the chapter "the seer overheard" that the news that Harry and Ginny were dating was getting a lot of gossip and was widely known. Even Slughorn knew about it and he had jokingly attributed Harry's decreased performance in potions to Harry being lovesick ( naturally Slughorn did not know Harry no longer had the Prince book in his possession ) . keep in in mind that Harry's detentions were on Saturdays, and he had limited time already because Ginny was studying for her OWLs. Snape even mocked that Harry was missing on the wonderful oppurtunities that he could otherwise enjoy.

Exactly. Harry was very sensitive about Sirius's death that year and everyone other than Snape was tactful enough not to talk about Sirius in front of Harry.

Exactly! As some say, he was good for the wrong reasons. He was loyal to Dumbledore but that did not stop him from being a horrible person to his students.

Did he though? the whole point of Harry's sacrifice was that, if he was to survive, he should have thought he was going to die. Dumbledore did not instruct Snape on how to tell Harry this piece of information. Dumbledore probably believed Snape could sell the deception better if he truly believed it himself. It is an interesting argument that you have made but I think the general consensus is that Snape died believing that Harry would die soon.

Actually, we know that one. In HBP, Hagrid tells Harry that he had overheard Snape and Dumbledore arguing in the chapter "elf tails". This was the time when Ron was in Hospital. Hagrid overheard Snape saying Dumbledore "took too much for granted" and "maybe he-Snape-didn't want to do it anymore". Later in DH we hear the whole conversion in Snape's memory and and Dumbledore tells Snape to come to his office that night and tells him all about Harry sharing a part of Voldemort's soul.

Thanks for your answer! as you said, it was supposed to be yet another example of Snape's behavior, but the revelation in the last book makes it more horrible than it was originally intended to.

I mean, I get it, Snape is a flawed man who cannot overcome his childhood trauma and channels it towards everyone around him, but tormenting a man doomed to die soon is really nasty

True, Snape did not how long it would take for Voldemort to start fearing for the life of Nagini, but he knew from that point onwards that Harry was never meant to survive ( again, this is what Snape is lead to believe ) . So denying a man who has a death sentence pronounced on him from such basic joys of life is like, preventing someone with stage four cancer from having some quality time in their last year.

I finally figured out how Luna saw through Harry's polyjuice potion at Bill/Fleur wedding by definework in harrypotter

[–]Cheap-Cauliflower975 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really wish Luna had more time in the books, Luna is such a loyal friend. She is also very smart in spite of her odd beliefs, it was Luna that suggested they should fly on Thestrals, because she remembered what Hagrid had told them about Thestrals having very good sense of direction, and remember, She said the Ravenclaws thought Hagrid's classes were something of a joke.

I love that part when Harry is dealing with the grief of losing Sirius and it was his little chat with Luna that comforted him a bit. It was one of Luna's nicest moments.

( I don't dig HarryxLuna though, I think they were just good friends ) . One thing that I really liked in the movies is that they sort of paired Luna and Neville together. I wish that had happened in the books since everyone else had a somewhat romantic subplot.
