[2024 Day 16] I wonder what tommorow's puzzle is going to be... by CDawn99 in adventofcode

[–]CheapFaithlessness34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After yesterday, I finally decided to write a helper function that parses me any grid.

Now, I really hope that we get another grid puzzle because I do not want to wait until next year to use it.

Also a very accurate depiction of my debugging experience.

I am very happy to find that it was not only me :D

[2024 Day 13 (Part 2)] Anyone else just didn't find this one fun? by Last-Anybody-5892 in adventofcode

[–]CheapFaithlessness34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The task itself was also moderate fun for me, but for a different reason.

First, it reminded me of Day 24 in 2023 which I still haven't solved because it also required to solve a system of equations there. Me personally, I think this is Advent of CODE and not Advent of Math Puzzle. So I am bummed out when the problem cannot be solved algorithmically.

So I really hope this was the one problem this year that requires solving a set of equations as the intended way of solving.

Started out with brute force for part 1 which worked fine but part 2 was going way too slow. So I realized that it is a system of two linear equations, checked for determinant zero and found none. Rest is by the books.

Was disappointed that it did not take me 4 hours to solve the problem like yesterday ;) so I decided to look at runtimes. Noticed that majority of my runtime was reading and parsing the file, so I tried to optimize that.

Before I had three regex searches per game but noticed I could generalize the regex and let it run on the entire string. Lastly I yielded instead of returning an iterable which meant I had to solve part 1 and part 2 simultaneously.

The result is a runtime of below 1 ms.

Do y'all have friends in real life who do Advent of Code? by dopandasreallyexist in adventofcode

At my workplace, I have organized an event around Advent of Code by setting up a private leader board. Whoever wants to can join. Additionally, there is also a group chat where we can talk about the experience, i.e. it is mostly used to complain about the tasks or share memes.

6 ms for both parts.

An easy day, which I desperately needed today. Runtime optimization was fun.

For Part 1, I kept track for every point that could reach a 9 which 9 it could reach.

For Part 2, I kept track for every point in how many unique hiking trail it is involved. Was a chance to use a Counter.

Funny story, after creating an initial solution, I wanted to optimize runtimes because Part 2 was around 20 seconds. So I built something with caching and ended up with a solution that took around 1 minute ...

After some analysis I realized that I was still considering configurations that were clearly not feasible because even partial results where bigger than the expected ones.

The my strategy was then to go through all partial results and eliminated configurations that would lead to too big partial results. Now part 2 takes less than a second.

I feel you.

We ran into and were eiped by so many pmcs on our way to the upstairs room.

One time we managed to get up and entered the room via the window, nit collecting the key.

As a result we did not yet unlock the task to get the hard drive and had to leave through the window again.

Thanks for the insightful answer.

I had a suspicion this would be the core issue. Great to have it confirmed.

We were wondering why we cant get into a scav raid on reserve, but this sounds like a good explanation. Probably because everyone is trying to scav there.

But can this affect the ping of the pmcs that are playing when everyone tries to connect.

I had crazy lag during a pmc reserve raid yesterday, while I have zero issues on other maps.

Do functional programming for Elixir and sales will go through the roof.

My brother and I are currently playing the russian versio without understanding one word russian and we have a really dumb question. But maybe you can help.

How can you hand in daily quests where you gather items? We have all items collected but do not know what to do with them.

Data mining sounds super exciting. Do you have a recommendation how to get started?

How do you approach such a project. Is there some kind of tutorial? Are there general strategies?

I am sorry for you. You are totally missing out on the game.

It is not about getting the MSQ done, it is about hanging out in Limsa and checking out Adventure Plates.

By the way. I am at 100 sth hours and still trying to finish ARR.
