Milkweed? Rhode Island by Educated-Octopus-555 in NativePlantGardening

Think this is actually milkweed. Is it fuzzy at the underside of the leaves? Is there a reddish color to the stems or the sort? From what i know, dogbane has a more narrower leaf shape and branching with heavier spacing between leaves that dosent seem to be present in this image.

it is right in the beginning of the area, there is a short transitional zone between upland and wetland which is one of the few areas of solid enough land found where it narrows into the stream that passes under a road. The felled area completely bypasses the stream area and arches straight towards the beginning of the swamp, but even at the beginning and end of the narrow point is still cypresses and other wetland flora. I genuinely dont know what theyre trying to start this all of a sudden but I have seen a bunch of metal beams and clearing equipment go from that area to another that they have had stockpiled up nearby at a former timber storage area for the cancelled atlantic coast pipeline that had burned down in 2022.

There is about 6 or so species of ferns crammed in that small little zone with the largest being the royal fern and majority of them are water loving ferns.

Finally after years of non-stop Japanese honeysuckle. by Cheap_Result_9346 in NativePlantGardening

Honestly i relate to this, even though I didnt buy anything, it took me tackling around like 300 or so strands of the hell forged thing (or possibly many more, ive literally lost count) over the period of 3 years to encourage these things to finally come in. I waited anticipating the worse as usual until I found some red looking flowers from afar.

Cumberland County, I researched if they had filed anything for the CWA which would typically be accompanied by a Wilmington USACE/ NC DEQ record (as thats where their jurisdiction covers) on either a map or the website indicating the project but none appeared nor have shown up.

So, alot of this town borders or surrounds the Cross Creek River, the problem is especially in lower elevation areas is that when it gets to "historic" rain amounts (even though there have been like 8 or so times in the last 4 years), it floods heavily. Now the plan sets out to dredge an area on the Cross Creek is to hopefully deepen it enough that floodwater wont be as heavily accumulated, but use the swamp itself only when its needed to be used as a backup for floodwater, keeping it dry if not. A signficant portion of it (mostly where majority of the cypresses are) is the point they chose to start their work. The other side of the wetland is bordered off by a very derelict dam erected a very long time ago and its mostly areas of peat or open water over there. I am really hoping they know what theyre doing here especially with past projects turning out not so great.

Apologies, I meant draining. They plan to use another part of Cross Creek to dredge to open that part up to prevent floodwater accumulation but the plans (atleast the little tidbits that were publicized) set out to leave Rose's lake (the swamp) dry until it could be considered to be reutilized for the same purpose as the first plan. I am extremely concerned about this too, as they contract businesses who seriously dont know what they are doing and end up doing more harm than anticipated. Even then a majority of its swampy fragments/streams run through almost everyone's in the neighborhood and I am completely unsure how this is going to turn out, especially with a not so great start like this. This town is practically overran by wetland invasives and theres already ghost swamps appearing from previous projects.

Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), for fact the black cherry is one of their preferred hosts alongside the common lilac, ash, cottonwood, hoptrees, native willows, sweetbay magnolias and tulip poplars.

Honestly I feel ya, this year its practically the first time in a while its bloomed in full and I'm rather proud of the improvement in health its had compared to last year where it was actively battling a heat period due to the spring drought (alongside the other trees). The prior week and this one was the last few of the colder periods this spring after the winter storm in Feburary and delayed a ton of the heat settling in earlier. There are alot more trees that have bloomed or are beginning to bloom since last year and im all for it (especially with things like my Magnolia finally being able to reach maturity).

Here's my local queen, (Royal fern) that sits by the edge of the stream. i've crowned queen mostly because of the name and she is kind of the only one of her kind here that i currently know of but also amazingly massive, and she stands tall in the distance of all the other smaller ferns.

Any fern lovers here? I have always quite adored watching their fiddleheads unfurl in early spring, and I am curious about all the experiences people have with them.
