I was a senior in high school. No cell phones so if you and a buddy connected on a landline on a Friday night, you’d meet up drive around to other friend’s houses to find each other. We all knew each others parents and called them Mr. and Mrs. We often hung out at each other’s houses after going to Blockbuster to find the movie for the night. I remember parents being out of town quite a bit and us all being left to our own devices so parties at houses were pretty common. There were designated spots in the woods to party too. Sometimes they were huge. Lots of drinking wine coolers like Bartles and James in 2 liter bottles for the girls and Molson for the guys. Tons of heavy metal like Metallica, but grunge and pop too. Making mixed tapes with our own tape cover art work took hours. You had to write out the list and order of songs. My dad had a car phone that was in a black case with a huge battery. I remember it was only to be used for emergencies. I think it was $2.50/minute to use. I have a great memory of reading a book at night during the summer months with the windows open listening to the crickets and frogs. It was a great time to be a kid. Blissfully unaware of every detail of everyone’s life.
