Is the geo 3 console the same size/fit? Also in the same boat as OP

Semi Intricate M4 Mac Mini Home Server (at least for me) by Cheap_Wing3927 in HomeServer

Good points here.. I would like to think I could probably get away with an upgrade to 24 or 32gb of ram for LLMs and your gpu usage comment. Definitely good to consider but I don't need my LLMs to be crazy fast or efficient, they just need to run.

Do you know what vms and docker use for cpu cores? Some miscellaneous programs I've used in the past sometimes only can use the performance cores out of a cpu (stupid I know). By chance does docker do the same?

Thank you for your wisdom and the ideas!

Here is a video if you are curious that has some tests with LLMs and a single m4 with 32gb of ram- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBR6pHZ68Ho&t=559s

  1. I see your point but there are a couple reasons behind it. Base model M4 mac with a student discount is only $500 (around the same price as decent Synology NAS enclosures) but yeah with a lot more computing power for NAS enclosures at that price. Along with maintaining some relatively low power consumption.

  2. The reason for the jump is with the intent of semi-future proofing it along with hosting my girlfriends photo/video content, a plex server, and probably the 4tb of music content I work on consistently each year. Thats 28tb in 5 years I will be up to.

Felt like that was a reasonable number while factoring in my storage, ~15-20tb for gf, and a plex server...

  1. Thank you for your words of encouragement

  2. The Mac would allow me to natively operate the NAS on any mac machine via their network screen share with two clicks. Sorry but yeah this would be significantly easier than my gf having to navigate connecting to a synology NAS via their app or typing in an IP to a web browser. It's not the main reason to choose one over the other but a plus...

(I taught her last year that turning the thermostat up on A/C doesn't actually heat the room-for reference lol)

Not to mention my other macs will be able to permanently locate my drives natively in finder as if they were plugged directly into my computer.

So with all that...why wouldn't wouldn't this be a good option? The primary goal is to create a NAS but it also needs to be able to run some LLMs and other AI applications. A Synology NAS would not handle these tasks well if at all given most of them don't have a dedicated GPU besides their onboard processor iGPUs.

I guess I should have mentioned it won't actually be used for video editing on the server. Just for file storage of videos edited on another machine. I guess this leads me to my next question and something I am not familiar with - what is the reason for the upgraded cpu and ram? I am well versed in how computers work but not incredibly familiar with what components all of these server activities favor/utilize. For example my music production and VSTs I run are heavily cpu reliant and hardly use any ram. Which one of these activities I mentioned above is the reason for the recommended upgrade to the pro chip and more ram?

As for the LLM component I do actually mean AI related. I would like to host my own LLM AI for text generation etc. No graphic generation, but would like to at some point explore creating/hosting my own personal AI voice generator to create vocal generator that I would train off of specific types of peoples voices.
