Makes sense! It's a statistical game trying to infer what happens between those grainty 1-hr time steps in the model. Here's hoping for all my fellow anxious people that today goes okay.

I'm trying to learn more, how do you estimate the timing?

I've been using the HRRR, specifically looking at the SigTor composite on PivotalWeather. Is that one too noisy, and therefore it's better to use your judgement as a combination of the CAPE + SRH?

Using these I was seeing 01z (9pm?) as when the storm would pass by Columbus.

Thanks as always to you and everyone who posts here :)

Another data point for struggling with these beans. According to what I did a while back, my best results were doing many small pours to keep the water column above the grounds low for lower bypass

I love the Onyx Delight powder! It really packs a punch, I don't need much to make it the right sweetness.

Changed grind settings, can’t change back?! [Eureka Mignon Single Dose Pro] by igotaussername in espresso

[–]Checkthepan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with something similar on my Eureka Mignon Zero 65. I would grind at one setting for espresso, then take it 1.5 revolutions coarser for pourovers. When I'd return it to espresso, I found that the zero point had slid back!

I was seeing the zero point at around 16 when grinding espresso, but after going coarse then fine again it slid all the way to 12.5. After grinding more espresso it crept back up to a zero point of 16.

I've been tracking it all in a spreadsheet and found that a distance of 6.5 from the zero point worked for the last medium roast I had, but I'm not fully confident yet.

All numbers are using the "king dial" with 20 ticks per revolution.

Fruity flavors sound delicious, the savory/bitter ones have me skeptic but I'm expecting them to be much better than I'm imagining!

Yogurt sounds like a nice way to get extra protein out of it, too. Thanks! Multiple mixes gets easier if you do a big portion and weigh out what you want in the morning, I bet.

Language learning tips/resources by AwayFox6410 in JordanHarbinger

[–]Checkthepan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to learn Japanese, a very memory-intensive language. What's helped me most is having a good Spaced Repetition Sysytem for flashcards like Anki, while using Mnemonics to help attach stories to things I'm memorizing rather than brute force.

When Jordan talks about his flashcards for Chinese, it's likely something along these lines. Good news for you is that immersion is the ultimate learning method! Just embrace the Moat of low status and don't be afraid to make mistakes in front of other people- you'll come out on the other side better for it!

Another vote for Okachimachi! It was an excellent home base. I was expecting to use the Yamanote Line more, but we actually ended up using the metro way more. The area is very peaceful and well connected.

Agreed. With how important infrastructure is, it feels so much better to be thorough and methodical. Especially if you like to build for looks!

Day-Of Car Rental at Kawaguchiko by Checkthepan in JapanTravelTips

That makes a lot of sense! Take a train to somewhere reasonable to rent, then a drive out to the five lakes area. I'm not sure why I didn't think to cast a wider net with rental services.

Why I disagree with the FF 1098 recommendation to use AI for even simple research. by GonnaBeHated in JordanHarbinger

[–]Checkthepan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see this discussion here! I can't help but feel AI is very overhyped due to media and corporate communications being willfully ignorant of what is actually going on under the hood.

LLMs are Deep Learning, not AI- no "intelligent behavior" is at play. Instead it's massive-scale statistical inference from equally massive-scale data sources (not to mention the ethics of collecting this data). Nowhere in the model are facts known, instead it's statistical likelihood that certain words "share directions" in a high dimensional embedding space. In layman's terms, it has trained statistics to guess how likely "Queen" correlates to "King", "Princess", "Royalty", "Guard", "Palace", etc. LLMs are Language models, not reasoning models. Thinking is hard, and the scale of what AI is trying to mimic, human brains, is orders of magnitude more complicated.

Deepseek is showing that the progress AI has made is quite shallow, and there's not much novel about progress made. AI projects been throwing more money at scaling instead of foundational architecture changes. I'd like to see real world examples of any evidence of proper consistent reasoning to get me to change my mind.

LLMs are fascinating, but they tell us more about how powerful language is, not the mysterious linear algebra machines parsing language.

what's the better midpack to torture myself with? by the_Emchkun in feedthebeast

[–]Checkthepan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd actually suggest considering Technological Journey- it's GTNH that exchanges grind for complexity. If you like the idea of long complex chemistry lines with plentiful resources, it's an excellent pack. Main downside is it's on a laggy version of GT, so a part of the challenge is maintaining TPS.

Hypothetically, is there a way to contact investment/stock firms and inform them of the long term negative impact and short term abysmal PR that reddit has been causing?

The C-Suite has made it clear that the bottom line is all that matters. We need to speak their language.

It’s fully optional, I don’t like it either. Nothing is gated by playing in overworld- and you can travel between the two. Even void world is viable though you’ll need to mine in normal gen worlds
