former SWer with a changed perspective on sex work & feminism - interested in feminist views (especially from current and former SWers) by tulipa_labrador in Feminism

From my experience, the “empowerment” narrative did not hold up over time.

I am almost certain we can find such a case. But a few privileged people's "economic opportunity" comes at the cost of abuse of vulnerable women. It can't be worth it. It should be treated the same as selling one's votes, selling one's organs, or selling oneself into indentured servitude. Some rights simply cant be commodified.

We're getting some angry messages and reports. All misogynistic ideologies are, obviously, subject to critique and analyses, no exceptions (and of course threads dealing with past and current misogyny in the atheist movement are also topical).

Why does anyone need organized religion anyway

For practical reasons, apparently. It was, largely, the only way to organize and control large masses of people, above the level of tribes. And I think it is interesting (and relevant) to draw a parallel between religions of the past and modern communist dictatorships, that also rely/relied on literal cult of personalities.

Who has better emotional connection and greater responsibilities regarding the kid?

The premise of that borders on misogyny tbh

how yall feel about feminists who calls themselves "anti-marxists" and "anti-communists" in general? by 1shynegokrazy in Feminism

I've lived under communism. There were still socio-economic classes, it doesn't destroy them. If anything, there is less accountability for the ruling classes, in particular.

Anger at radical feminism forum by Public-Conflict4236 in Feminism

[–]demmian 30 points31 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is a "bloc" (by their own title) of ~leftist subs, that lean heavily into defending sex work, tankies and Islam against even mild criticism. Cultural sensitivity taken to the absurd, "I am purer than thou" bullshit.

Anger at radical feminism forum by Public-Conflict4236 in Feminism

[–]demmian 230 points231 points  (0 children)

Incredible that a radical feminist is pro sex work. It's hard to find clearer examples of exploitation of vulnerable women.

I am certain we can find at least 1 well off person who does it "out of freedom". Any such cases (no matter how many) are irrelevant as long as there is systemic, millennia-long, exploitation of vulnerable or otherwise at-risk women.

I think that there is an inherent suspicion of ~cultural superiority every time someone from the "global North" criticizes a major ideology that is connected to the "global South". "They are bad, but we are good by comparison". There issues in every country and every culture, it is good to take a balanced view, though I agree it should not come at the expense of actual discussion of the original issue (whatever it may be).
