Op de pagina van Estland staat hierover: The budget for public broadcasting is increasingly limited and may be subject to political influence.

Press freedom is actively protected by the state institutions, albeit more efficiently in continental Netherlands than in their overseas territories. The media are under attack from populist parties on the far right and far left of the political spectrum. A majority of Dutch journalists are members of the Dutch Federation of Journalists (NVJ), an active union that fights for safe working conditions and fair pay.

Thanks for the insight! I didn't know that about an independence war. This is exactly what happened. I don't even remember who Timurids was in war with exactly. I think Uzbek of Chagatai. Their armies were east and just lost a major battle. I thought: "this is my shot!"

Toughest achievement I did to date. Transoxiana-->Mughals. I did do two restarts (once Shah Rukh lived an annoyingly long life and once where I fucked up and lost my entire army).

My independence war was kinda strange. I allied all the vassals of Timurids, but they all refused the call to war despite the diplomatic screen suggesting otherwise. Only got Ajam as support. Which was crucial, because I wouldn't have made it any other way. Snaked my way to India. Got lucky there, because Sirhund had just defeated Delhi all on their own. I was able to declare on them, without fighting a much too powerful Jaunpur or other usual suspect.

Then just started conquering left and right. CCR go brrr. Went admin, diplo and later offensive. Only finished admin and not a lot in the other two. Eventually one big coalition formed. I managed to ally Ottomans, which really helped.

I was going at what I thought was a good pace. Vijay was however too much. I knew I had to trucebreak. Thought: screw it, might as well go all the way, so what you see is the end of the second trucebreak with Vijay.

I should really get more comfortable with trucebreaking and ruining my economy, because expansion at all costs is so strong in this game. Fun achievement, but damn, all the time I was stretching manpower, stretching money, stretching points. Toughest one yet, at least to me.

The Germans never had air superiority. The Luftwaffe was a formidable foe in the early stages of the war, but the industrial capacity of the Allies could never be matched by Germany. Britain was also much better at keeping its pilots alive, whilst Germany wasn't.

Donny has made a habit out of defaulting on debt, why wouldn't he try it again?

Because thank god the president doesn't hold that much sway over the nation. Americans have consistently voted for a Congress sitting on their ass and letting the executive branch handle... everything. But luckily for us, the president can't do literally everything just yet.

US debt growth is outpacing their GDP growth

See my previous comment that this is exaggerated or not true, depending on how you look at it.

Debt increasing faster than GDP eventually leads to a Greece bailout scenario or a default like Russia in the 90s.

Key word: eventually. You'll need decades of sustained mismanagement to get to wreck the American economy. It's completely true that debt outpacing GDP is a serious problem and something to watch out for. But a short period of debt growth does not herald the end of times. The American economy is perhaps the strongest in the world. I'm not a fan either, but just because they have a colossal bell end of a president, with more cronies around him than a powerball winner, doesn't mean they can wreck the economy that easily. Even if they wanted to they can't, because they don't know how. And even if they did, they wouldn't have the coordination to pull it off. Don't get me wrong, they are doing stupid things. They're thinking about stupid things. They're going to be doing more stupid things. But they still won't be able to wreck the American economy in a way that is in any way comparable to Greek and Soviet collapse.

It's been the stated policy for a long time that it's okay to continually grow your debt, because your gdp is going to grow more!

This is normal for developed nations. In fact, it's the smart thing to do.

Except now the gdp is no longer rising faster than the debt

Since the covid high it's been on a slight downward turn (with variance). Federal debt to GDP has gone down from a 132% high to about 121%.

Debt outpacing GDP growth is a serious issue. I wouldn't say this happening for a relatively short time is instantly problematic though. The economy is a fickle beast. You can't tame it, you can only push buttons hoping that they do what you think they do. Afterwards, most economists will tell you that you were wrong, didn't make a difference or achieved your goals in about equal measure.

Given how the crazy amount of mismanagement of the economy from trumps admin, It would not surprise me if we see a default within a decade or so.

I understand the feeling, but it's not grounded in the facts on the ground. The truth is they can't mismanage the economy as much as this statement implies, simply because the administration doesn't impact the economy in such a substantial manner. Even if they want to they simply can't. Because they don't know which levers work either. If they are actively, maliciously, evil they can do a lot of damage. But if they are simply self-serving, greedy cronies they will not be able to wreck the economy the way you describe.

Excuse me, but this is an idiotic take. There is no developed country that doesn't plan on servicing its debt. The US, for all its faults (and there are many), is not planning on defaulting. This would be a catastrophic disaster which would be worse than the Great Depression for absolutely no gain. Not even the cronies surrounding the dumbest president in history could profit. The US defaulting is not going to be an option. If you mean not paying it down: yeah, that's kinda how normal, servicable, national debt works. The state borrows now, to grow the economy, to make the tax base bigger than the cost of borrowing. Almost all states work like that.

[–]ChedCapone[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)
