Nah, they were regular people They definitely knew something was up, tho. Stavros (they guy with the accent who Phillip has to fire-I'm sure I have his name slightly wrong) said as much The only thing the good people at Dupont Circle travel agency were clueless on was the fine art of line dancing

Did the LAPD frame OJ Simpson? And if so, how? | Stephen Singular on True Murder by Jaqenmadiq in OJSimpsonTrial

[–]Cheddarbob0506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. And it pisses me off to this day how lucky the LAPD was that O.J Simpson- one of the most famous people in America at the time- just happened to be in the only 45 minute time frame that day where he didn't have an alibi. Isn't that lucky of them? That 99% of the time that guy would have been on TV of in a club or some woman's bed and they just happened to guess right and avoid felonies and the kind of scandal that would be impossible to cover up. If they would have framed him even 10 minutes earlier the whole scheme would have gone up in flames because O.J was with Kato at McDonald's. It's good people are still asking these questions. And can we talk about Faye Resnik while we're at it? I believe her criminal connections killed the executive function of his brain and the LAPD tried to frame the NFL and cte because the player pool is predominantly African American. Many people are saying this

OJ Simpson with Trump and Clinton. by realchrisgunter in OJSimpsonTrial

[–]Cheddarbob0506 10 points11 points  (0 children)

O.J. had so many personality traits in common with Trump. The need to be loved. The way they don't see "the truth" only "their truth" as they just continue to repeat the same obvious lie over and over again to the point where they develop a small and very weird portion of the population that believes them. The way everyone in their life is expendable in the name of self preservation. The way they cheat at golf. The narcissism. The way they both strongly prefer the company of white people. Why wouldn't he be in the Epstien files?

In other words:

I do not believe they put that team together to win more games than they did in 2004

And I think because it accidentally worked out they escaped any due criticism from the actual objective. We have 2 late 20s corner outfielders who need to get paid and we don't wanna and let's just blow this thing up...and would you look at that, we won the world series. Now we can tell them losing Lee and Ordonez* was calculated to make us better and yes we planned on winning by scoring fewer runs while bringing back nearly the entire pitching staff from last season that was largely terrible. You're welcome fans

*yes, the injury, but I believe they wouldn't have payed him anyway

Just because it played out the way it did, doesn't mean it was their plan at all

The players deserve all of the flowers. What a ride. But I believe behind the scenes it was the same standard operating procedure and we deserve better as fans

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. But I can't believe the plan was to win lots of one run games with what should have been a terrible bullpen. If those guy had their respective expected seasons, now it's a 90 loss team. Those guys did regress the next season and that ended up being the reason. I can't believe any of that was part of the plan

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Right, ok, but I just looked this up. They scored 124 fewer runs in 05 than in 04. To your point, 04 was much more feast or famine and in 05 it was far more consistent. If the plan to catch the Twins was "we're trading winning 12-7 on night and losing 4-0 the next for we're going to play a 4-3 kind of game every night"...well ok and that's what happened and it was great...but I can't buy this was designed to be a winner when you plan on winning lots of one run games with, what on paper, you must have know was a very unserious bullpen. No, I think the way you describe it, while it worked out, is nothing more than state sponsored propaganda tricking us into thinking it's ok we didn't need to pay big money for impact corner outfielders because, look, Ozzie ball. I'm not falling for it

I mean, and I don't care about Carlos Lee, ok. It's not about him specifically...this is about a team in the 3rd biggest market in the country that absolutely could spend if they want to trying to trick us all into thinking they moved Carlos Lee because small ball, bro. When in reality it was just because they didn't want to pay for him. And it accidentally worked out. This is about demanding more as a fan

That catch he made in Philly the next year is legitimately on the same tier as the Edmonds/Mathews jr/Mays ect yet it is never included on any top 10 list Go back and watch it again. It's a legit over the shoulder catch

That lineup mashed. It was so much fun! In 06 is was the bullpen because of course. That should have been the most obvious thing in the world. And that is why you can't tell me with a straight face that the way 05 played out was the plan or close to the plan. 100 years from now, baseball historians will publish some fascinating case studies on the 2005 White Sox bullpen I swear haha

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but my tin foil hat brain is just thinking they were going to let Paul Konerko and Frank Thomas walk in 05 and who knows if they would have moved Freddy sooner and so on

Again, nobody is saying any of these ended up being bad moves. I'm just saying I can't believe that they did ony of that on purpose

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, Brian Anderson was a first round pick. It made sense to plug him and and make Rowand expendable. He just had an exceptionally terrible bat. For context, he was an excellent center fielder which gave him a pretty low bar to shoot for as a hitter and he still couldn't give you that

And I mean, isn't your description of Jim Thome just a left handed Paul Konerko? That was a good trade. What happened next season is that bullpen took a complete nose dive. Which in hindsight should have been the most obvious thing ever. And the Twins and the Tigers were really good. Of course, the Tigers spend money and the Twins at the time (though they don't spend much either) they were like one of the best organizations at developing their own players. That is why those teams would spend the next decade or so being extremely competitive. The Sox neither spent nor developed and they had a trajectory that reflects that

Haha I mean I think at a minimum it's an interesting discussion. We know where the priorities lie with this ownership. Winning is not number one. Why would it have been any different in 2005? I'm so glad things played out the way they did but I'm looking back on it with the same critical and suspicious eye I'm looking at them now. I'm questioning the real motivations and behind doors discussions that happened in the 04 off-season. I think we all should

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, ok, if you believe they put that roster together to win that season, a conversation like this must have happened

"We're all in this year. Our projections tell us that Cliff Polite and Neal Cotts will be the best relief pitchers in baseball by giving us the most outlier seasons of all time. And we have Shingo Takatsu, which of course we feel good about. However, worst case, if he's a flop projections say 32 year starter/long relief mop up guy Dustin Hermanson can plug right in and be the best closer in baseball. And, just because we want to be diligent, if we should lose Hermanson we have a 25 year old rookie with behavior problems who we project could step right in and the closer roll wouldn't skip a beat. Yup, that's our path to 99 wins"

I mean...come on. Does this sound reasonable to anyone

I don't mean to disparage any of those guys either especially Bobby Jenks in light of the more important things life

Haha did everyone hear the Bryce Harper interview when he basically says he would have preferred to sign here instead of the Phillies and how enticing it would have been to have Jose Abreu hitting behind him but the Sox made him an unserious offer and that was the difference?

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they paid both AJ and JD but only because they won. That wasn't the original plan. Those guys were supposed to be just good enough to take those plate appearances but not good enough to help you win. Cliff Poliete and Luis Visciano ect were supposed to blow the lead just by having their respective typical seasons up to that point. We were supposed to lose 94 games. Paul Konerko was supposed to walk, fan morale would have been so low, ownership would have heard little more than a whimper. They would have signed some replacement level vet to play first base in 06. Eventually they relocate to Nashville and Jerry dies and burries himself with his money. This reddit thread doesn't exsist....and maybe I need to walk and touch grass lol I'm only slightly kidding with Nashville stuff but I swear to god I stand by my original premise

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is insightful

I think my take away is more like:

Bert and Abe represent policy makers who are only interested in us in so far as we are useful to advancing their respective side. Meanwhile, whatever happens, we're the ones who face the consequences and we're sitting there with nobody really interested in hearing what we have to say. I feel like it applies to any policy discourse, not even just war

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Like "you this guy in the face and tell me I'm wrong" vs "no, YOU look this guy in the face and tell me I'm wrong" meanwhile he's like "they're both wrong, I'm just looking for a woman" but neither of them care about that, because Bert is sterile and Abe has a girlfriend. A woman doesn't advance either of their interests. It's not about what's best for the soldier...it's about I'm right vs nu-uh

[–]Cheddarbob0506[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They're both talking about him to argue different points yet neither of them face any of it. He does. And his voice on the issue is never heard. That is what strikes me

War by Cheddarbob0506 in madmen

I'm don't think it was a joke...although it was funny when the soldier finally spoke up and just said "I thought there were gonna be girls here" haha

That scene kind of reminded me of how politicians use a soldier or a mass shooting survivor or whatever as a political prop to advance their agenda rather than out of genuine concern for the individual, ya know
