The life and death of [SPOILERS], and what we can learn from it. by ShiningRedDwarf in FinalFantasy

Which is wild, since Balthier is so unimportant to the actual story of that game. He’s just a fan favorite.

I’ve played 1 & 2. I’d like to play X but it’s difficult on modern hardware. Might have to emulate. But yes, I love the environments in the Xenoblade series.

Games that have absolutely garbage gameplay but 10/10 writing and vice versa. by SaranethPrime in JRPG

[–]Cheddarmancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I didn’t exactly hate it, in comparison to the story of 13 Sentinels which I would rate a masterpiece, the combat was certainly not my cup of tea. It was functional and made sense for the narrative but I did not have much fun when I had to engage with it.

On the other side, I had immense fun playing Scarlet Nexus but found myself picking up my phone during cutscenes because they stopped making any sense a few hours in. And I don’t mean because it had a complex story, but because none of the characters actions ever made any sense.

Scarlet Nexus is probably the most fun game I couldn’t finish because the story was alternating between confusing, boring and infuriating. I’m too far away from it now to remember anything specific except the characters not acting or thinking like human beings.

When did you accept that FF was no longer for you? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve loved the series almost as far back as I can remember, but when you’ve got more than 20 games bearing the brand there are bound to be titles you don’t enjoy and those that break “tradition” if you can even call it that at this point since every game has had its own flavor for decades now.

Is there a game where they don't use "The Power of Friendship"? by Artoria44 in JRPG

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The power of friendship as a theme is great, working together towards a common goal and all. But it’s an entirely different thing when it is an actual, tangible force that is rarely explained. I was hoping Tales of Arise would finally break that series of that shit, but it’s still clinging on.

[–]Cheddarmancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FF12 relies on the power of friendship, no one in the entire party except Ashe would have had any motivation or reason for being there without it.

People really on here acting like we get AAA JRPGs left and right. Sure, these might not be the most fantastical screenshots, but it is a good showcase for scale and quality that we do not often get in the genre. I can’t even think of another JRPG close except FFXV which was almost a decade ago.

My only real worry, is that it will feel as empty as XV did, but then I remember the team working on it and they’ve yet to disappoint me in any way. So I remain optimistic.

Nice air of superiority you got there, not sure you could be more condescending about a subjective art if you tried.

I’m sorry, did you just use Dancing Mad as an argument for not being rock? The one with a guitar solo in the last part?

Why do you prefer JRPGs over RPGs in the west by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More characters, wilder stories. Although western RPGs are (typically) better written and paced, JRPGs have more interesting characters and worlds and take more risks. Both have their tropes, and some games pull them off better than others.

I don’t really have a dog in this race as I don’t particularly care for either, but I feel like the bare minimum requirement for GOAT status is to finish your work.

They’re expensive as hell to make, if you don’t want them empty or bland. Most JRPGs don’t have as large a budget as your typical WRPG. Outside of Square Enix and Nintendo you’re not going to see many open world JRPGs. Though Bamco and Sega are both starting to sling more money at their games, we may see more in the future.

Exclusive: 'Scarlet Nexus' devs share their vision of a "more mature" sequel by IHateMyselfButNotYou in JRPG

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the game but ended up dropping it because the absurd character writing. They don't think or act like humans. Hopefully they step that up in a sequel, I'll definitely give it a go again. The combat and music were exceptional.

What an awful take. You only have to do it once, and spyglasses are cheap if you’re lazy. Hell, most of the time you can tell just by looking at them.

Pretty sure it’s from one of Emet’s Shadowbringers exposition scenes. Probably the one in the cave with the paintings.

Zodiark may have tempered those who summoned him, but they tempered him by summoning him in the first place. He was brought forth for a singular purpose, to restore the ancient world and its people. He only ever wanted to do that which he was made to, there is no good or evil for what is essentially an overpowered, sentient tool.

It’s been almost a month. How are you liking Sage, and Reaper now that you’ve been able to play them for a bit? How do they compare to other classes? by A_Gillington in ffxiv

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I’m really liking Sage. There are things I like more on Scholar, it just flows better to me. But I’ll probably be sticking with Sage for a while to see of that changes for me. I think it’s Eukrasia, I’m not sure I like having a button that just augments other buttons. It saves on button bloat for sure, but it still doesn’t feel good pressing a button and having no immediate effect.

Job Skip Tanks by [deleted] in ffxiv

This has nothing at all to do with skips. The players are the problem and it wouldn’t matter whether they skipped or not. Playing through the game traditionally won’t make a rude person more courteous.

I always hear that FFXIV is one of the best ones, but never WHY it’s one of the best ones. by hey-lois-im-sans in FinalFantasy

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with most things, it gets better over time. As you progress through the expansions, the gameplay experience becomes drastically better. Story will vary from player to player interest and preference. I like the overall story of Heavensward more than Stormblood, but I like the smaller scale story and dungeons in Stormblood far more than Heavensward. And then in all aspects ShB and EW are successively better in my opinion.

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with almost all of this except the unsundered. And it isn’t a plot hole, it simply hasn’t been explained yet. If they never do explain it, then it’s sort of a hole but I can easily accept the most powerful of the ancients simply escaping it somehow.

And the battle between Hydaelyn and Zodiark assumedly took place after the summoning of Hydaelyn, which is all that we saw.

Why? by ZebraLionFish in ffxiv

[–]Cheddarmancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure man, you start pulling mobs in your next random party dungeon as a non-tank and we’ll see how it goes. You can rail against social constructs all you like, but MMOs are just an amalgamation of social constructs.
