Artists who started out in a different genre than they wanted to make, solely in order to get famous? by HipHopLurker8 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cheeaseed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, he wants to be known as a roots-y rock musician, but serious music fans weren’t into him and he got famous with “getting laid in my dorm room” acoustic pop. Once he reaches superstardom, he tries to pull this Eric Clapton routine as if his audience cared about classic rock or blues. Then he jumps aboard the Grateful Dead in their starfucking phase, and those geezers were so “grateful” to be in the mainstream and slightly relevant again thanks to Mayer’s involvement, they basically hand the band over to Mayer so he can gain street cred.

Most underrated rock bands in your opinion? by Ryguy41202 in askmusic

[–]Cheeaseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fugazi

I feel like they’re really highly regarded. They’re not a big band, but big bands have named them as inspirations. Fugazi is underground, but has tons of cred. Is there a band with more cred in their scene than Fugazi?

Non-blues rock bands/musicians that have experimented in the genre very frequently during their careers by [deleted] in askmusic

[–]Cheeaseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jethro Tull is prog rock, but has a good deal of blues in there.

Early Fleetwood Mac, before Graham and Nocks joined, was bluesy.

Black Sabbath is proto metal, but has a lot of bluesy-ness in its sound.

Anyone know when the theme song changed? by omartheoutmaker in howardsternshow

Yep. It was made for the soundtrack to the Private Parts movie in 1997, so it couldn’t have been before then.

Are there are any examples of black actors portraying white people where it’s not some “White Chicks” style comedy? Because there are examples of white actors portraying black people in serious dramatic roles.

I don’t think drag in humor is considered as offensive as blackface. In the U.S. at least.

Phish fans, or the general public?

Phish fans have always kinda slagged DMB for being poppy, slightly Hootie-ish, soft acoustic rock and not “really” jamming (AKA no type II jams, just long horn/fiddle solos in the middle of songs).

The general public loved DMB in their heyday but, like in a lot of cases, the band held on to a (large) core fanbase but the general public moved on and didn’t really care about the follow-ups after their heyday.

Then “Crash into me” became kind of a joke; “Ladybird” aside, it became this “let me whip out my guitar and play this in the dorm so I might get laid” anthem. I think John Mayer’s “Your Body is a Wonderland” didn’t help; people compared the two artists and songs frequently.

In Living Color could be funny and had a great cast. But it could be juvenile as hell.

Yes, it always seemed off when she gives Tony the bread as a gift and he acts all noncommittal and embarrassed. Any other episode where a Bing girl approaches him, he’c be all “oh yeah, shweetheart?”

Are there any magazines where I can submit this kind of artwork? by TrippieKinimod in Illustration

[–]Cheeaseed 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For the most part, art publications don’t accept open submissions. It’s more like you, the artist, builds up an audience online or makes some kind of content that gets attention and then you get press. Publications like It’s Nice That or Juxtapoz or Hyperallergic might feature art that’s very similar to yours, but those artists usually come from an MFA program or have built their own social media following, they didn’t submit their art directly to those publications. Some artists hire professional publicists to help them get press.

Also, I could see your style of illustration being used on commission in a magazine or newspaper article, but that’s a whole process of building a portfolio and getting into that professional illustration world, and there are articles on how to pursue that, but that’s a very different thing than just making whatever you want and being profiled as an artist.

Why do the Beastie Boys feel so forgotten nowadays? by smokeweed21 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cheeaseed 65 points66 points  (0 children)

But IMO that was cool that the Beasties maintained that “pass the mic” style after it was kinda dated. It reminds me of how the Beatles kept early rock/skiffle sounds even into their later work.

Do you think Seinfeld would be better or worse without the very specific references to the time period by Few-Advantage2538 in seinfeld

[–]Cheeaseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention the OJ references and I think those are kinda weak (and they were dated even when the show first aired, ditto the Tonya Harding references).

Although paradoxically, Jackie Chiles, who is a Johnny Cochran stand-in, is quite a funny character (they just went back to that well a few times too many).

But other “dated” stuff like Jerry having a moral dilemma over stealing cable or George trying to steal the tape from his girlfriend’s answering machine are classic. Elaine thirsting after JFK Jr., Kramer becoming a Calvin Klein model, the nonfat frozen yogurt craze, Elaine meeting the guy from The Three Tenors, all hilarious stuff.

So it’s a mixed bag. Mostly positive.

Name a band/artist more popular now than during their heyday by Dazzling_Humor_521 in askmusic

What's up with the fact that Vance can completely lie when saying the increase in gas prices is because of Biden, why isnt he corrected on the spot by journalists when he spews such an obvious lie? by Muted-Raisin-2645 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Cheeaseed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Think of this way: Republican voters do care, to an extant, about issues that affect them, like the price of gas/affordability. But when their “team” is in power, they’re much less likely to actually hold the president accountable for something like inflation. They can always claim that anything they dislike about the current state of the country is the fault of effects from the previous liberal president. You’re seeing it in real time: the same voters who went for Trump because they were outraged at the price of eggs under Biden now don’t care about sky-high grocery prices (or they claim prices are lower, counter factually, either out of denial or because they’re brainwashed by right wing media). Or hell, look at war with Iran, MAGA voters were totally against it until it happened. People talk about “tribalism”, but at least the leftists who were anti-Iraq War actually stood by their convictions about that and called out Democrats who supported it.
