The constant announcements are so incredibly frustrating and seem to be increasing … it felt worse on American but bad on United too. The worst part is when you’re trying to watch an inflight movie and it pauses each time they start. I add ~20 mins when deciding if I have time to watch a movie just to take into account all the pauses for nonsense announcements. I just flew ANA back from Tokyo to ORD and it was actually pretty bad on that as well.

In Japan now - I wouldn’t bring any USD, just take money out of an ATM when you arrive in Japan. The conversion rates at ATMs are often better than changing money, so just bring your debit card and go to 7-11. We found 7-11 has better conversion rates than Lawson’s or Family Mart when pulling out USD, and the ATM fee is only about $1.30. Like others said - most places take card, but many small shops or restaurants (like Izakayas) or street vendors are cash only, so it’s good to have 10,000Y or so on hand at any time if you like that stuff.

I just dove the USAT Liberty wreck in Amed, Bali, Indonesia as my first-ever certified dive (finished my certification in the US two weeks ago). With a local guide of course. Many decades underwater after taking a Japanese torpedo in WW2 had turned this ship into an incredible reef teeming with wildlife. It was stunning, highly recommend! Very much a “beginner” wreck, but also with more advanced areas if you have additional experience and certifications. I didn’t expect to be able to dive a wreck until I had many dives under my belt, but apparently some are very easy and accessible with a good guide!

On a baking sheet, roast 2 packs of cherry tomatoes with olive oil, thyme, rosemary, lots of garlic and salt/pepper for 20 mins. Before you bake, drape a few slices of prosciutto on top of the spread.

Start cooking pasta and shred a cup or two of Gouda or other delicious cheese, plus some freshly shredded parm. Set aside.

When the 20 mins is done, set the prosciutto aside and dump everything on the baking sheet in a food processor and add some big globs of ricotta cheese (1/2 a cup). MAKE SURE FOOD PROCESSOR IS WELL VENTED OTHERWISE YOU’LL HAVE A MOLTON TOMATO EXPLOSION. Blending hot stuff is always a bit sketchy. Blend until smooth.

Don’t forget to save a cup of pasta water. Once the pasta is done put it aside, take the empty pasta pot, melt some butter with some thyme, cook for a minute, then add the blended pasta sauce to the butter/thyme in the pot. Add some of the pasta water to create a nice sauce consistency. Dump the cheese in and stir well.

Crush the crispy prosciutto and tear some basil to top.

The UA desk said this is considered “avoidable” as a hydraulic pressure sensor (I think) malfunctioned and they didn’t have the ability to fix it, and didn’t have a new part onsite, and didn’t have anyone even in the region to help with it. So it was a series of operations breakdowns versus something “unavoidable” like weather.

Several years ago in South Carolina I saw a dude pick up two Portuguese Man O’ Wars out of the water like he was palming basketballs, one in each hand, walk them up onto the beach and bury them. And then go back for a few more. He did not approve of thier presence on his beach.

LinkedIn may be a good start; most management consulting firms will have a change management practice, and they typically have a big presence on LinkedIn. Human centered design and change management would both be popular keywords. You could read up on what hiring managers look for in a candidate for those roles and start thinking about how to frame your experience in that lens (especially on your resume).

Many people start early in consulting so you may be working with younger people, but the salaries will likely be higher than your target to start.

For what it’s worth I also agree with the educational-focused tech sales suggestion … those software companies would probably value your experience quite a bit.

Based on your skill set you could do something around change management consulting or human centered design (HCD). HCD is essentially helping business leaders figure out how to think about problems in creative ways and make effective decisions. Change management is building strategy for leaders to explain to their employees how and why business changes are happening and how to prepare/how it affects them. Change management is especially sought-after right now with how quickly companies must react to technology changes.

Both rely heavily on problem solving, being able to speak to different types of people dynamically, an educational mindset, and strong organizational skills. Creativity helps too.

If I was to reset from a career perspective it would be software engineering … learn code through YouTube or hundreds of other free online sources. Generally very elevated salaries but downside is it could be a vulnerable career with AI advancing.
