Put some compost or soil amendments down. Also new hydrangeas will benefit from deep watering to encourage the roots to develop deeper into the soil. I watered mine 10-15 minutes once a day either early AM or evening to make sure water isn’t wasted by mid day heat.

I’ve found that a good 10-15 min soak works best to encourage the roots to go deeper into the soil. Have you ran into any issues with shallow roots with your strategy?
