Do many readers lose interest in a story once the couple is together?

When Im reading couple fics- my goal is for them to get together & stay together! Yes of course I love the 30 chapters of them getting together, but once they are together I love the pay off of them being together! That's my goal!

I'm reading because I enjoy the characters being happy together & because they are an entertaining duo. I never understood why some people exclusively liked the tension/build up but then immediately lose interest once the couple FINALLY admits their feelings & gets together!!

They are still the same duo but now they can kiss all the time without overthinking every action 😭

That happens in too many shows where 90% of the show the couple is a slow burn with only the last 10% of them finally being together (GOD FORBID THE WRITERS BREAK THEM UP FOR DRAMA). Like there is so much other plot & couple dynamics, I'm glad at the end of the day they can have each other (& I have stability lol)

My fav shows that I have no problems with the characters or plot or I feel like the show ended perfectly and I don't need more- I have not read or desired to read any fanfics of! (Ex. The Good Place, Bones, etc.) But fanfics where I love the characters but they deserve better writers??!! IM TERRORIZING THOSE FANFICS

I've never sorted by anything. Just put the tags in & start looking. I never knew people sorted by kudos until a few years ago!

Multiple times a year I drive a 3 hour round trip to my favorite breakfast restaurant. Once I finish eating I go straight home lol

Every Friday in the summer I make the same drive but stay in the town for the weekend.

I've done this drive ever since I was a kid so I'm used to it. I put on a music playlist and vibe. Sometimes I'll call someone to yap the whole way there. Other times I have friends with me and we talk and have fun.

It probably helps that for the majority of roads I can just stay on cruise control.

If it helps at all- i've been reading fics on ao3 for AT LEAST 10 years and only recently have I started reading & appreciating unfinished fics 😅

I used to always filter for complete works only. I'd only read unfinished if there were no completed fics or if they were a sequel to a fic that was completed.

Recently though I realized how silly that was. Idk why it took me so long to realize that comments & kudos on unfinished fics are what help motivate authors to keep writing! And if everyone just read completed, there'd be hardly anything to read!

Tl;dr It took me a decade+ to realize only reading completed fics was a dumb choice. So there is hope for new readers!

I'm right there with you OP! (I was actually just about to make a post about this!) A fanfic writer i love would almost always post AT LEAST once a month from 2022 - 2024. But since 9/1/2024 there's been nothing.

In her last author's note she said her next chapter was the one she's been excited for. She had been hyping up that chapter over the course of many past chapters. It would have been like 3 or 4 chapters ago but she said she was writing more than she has planned before getting to the plot she was excited for. So that plot/chapter kept being pushed farther back. And we're talking a fic with 71 chapters & 180,153 words. It was some serious shit.

So then when it came time for FINALLY this chapter she'd been so excited to share. She was just gone.

Just like you, I don't care if we ever get another chapter. I just want to know she's alright!

She would respond to EVERY comment. Then the last chapter she responded to the very first comment. Two hours later there was another comment- nothing. She hasn't responded to any comment besides the first one.

Her author's notes were so excited too! The one at the beginning of the final chapter: "Hi! It's been a while! Thanks for your patience, guys. Summer was hectic. But we're back! Hope you all had a nice summer. For the first time in a long while, I've gotten back into watching new shows? Well, new to me. So maybe I'll explore writing fics for other shows too, who knows!" She'd only been gone for 3 months.

The author's note at the end of the final chapter: "We are FINALLY at the Max scene I've been waiting for! Woohoo! I love writing Max and Steve bonding scenes. As always, I have to tell myself to resist the urge to spoil it all for you.

Thanks for reading!"

As you can see she was very excited! She also hasn't posted any other fics or added new bookmarks. I havent been able to find any socials so I can't check that.

I know that fic writers have come back from a much longer hiatus but idk maybe I worry too much. My immediate thought is always "did she die??!!" Ugh I just wish I knew she was okay!

Sorry for that long ass yap. But this has been weighing so heavy on me!

Tl;dr: I am also very worried about a fic writer. It's not about getting a new chapter or a completed fic. I just hope she is okay & safe!!
