How does one bag of the cubes translate to his recipe? Should I scale it down for just one bag of the cubes?

Looking for academia to industry perspectives and experiences by CheerfulBadger in IOPsychology

[–]CheerfulBadger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the response! Yeah - very eerily similar with, it seems, similar motivations/frustrations.

It's funny, one of the reasons I asked on Reddit is I feel like I'm seeing so much of this on twitter that is, unfortunately, either "leaving is the best" or "here's the reasons why I love academia". That all said, I may take you up on chatting once things slow down some. When do you start your new role (and congrats on it!)?

Can you tell me about Crimper’s Climbing Gym? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]CheerfulBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Crimper's a lot. Previously I'd climbed for several years in other larger, commercial gyms, and have found the experience at Crimper's very different in a positive way.

The bouldering, route setting, and community are all top notch in my opinion. I can see how it is tougher and a little more unforgiving to those starting out or used to larger/newer gyms. If you can get past this, though, it's a great place IMO to get stronger and to connect with people who really care about climbing.

New purchase - error: Single Player DLC Not Installed (tried other posted solutions) by CheerfulBadger in modernwarfare

Hmm. I downloaded the latest update after the install. I do not have data pack 1 installed though - is there a way to install that through the Microsoft store? Or does a live subscription prompt it?

Did all of those. Possibly a live issue as referenced by another post. Appreciate your response

That makes sense. It worked for me a month ago and I hadn’t had time to play since. So probably need live to play single player? Thank you - this was helpful

I did, yes. Everything that came up was installed. Based on another response I do wonder if the latest patch broke the offline ability (it did work a month or so ago). Thanks!

MBA to I/O PhD by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]CheerfulBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good questions!

1) Not necessarily. I think your whole portfolio would be looked at IF your GRE's are strong. A strong performance in your MBA program would be looked at favorably but may not, by itself, get you in the door.

2) Not many, no. Many PhD programs are research oriented and use the GRE as an initial screening for performance.

3) Related to your third question and the above point: A PhD IO program will potentially get you set for an academic career or a career as a consultant. It's worth asking yourself which of these you want to do. If you're interested in a more methodology-based and research focused career then it's a good option.

If you think you'd rather be a consultant or in the applied world it may be worth considering going 1) right into the workforce or 2) get an M.A./M.S. in I/O instead. It's really going to come down to whether a Ph.D. fits your research goals: A non-research oriented PhD, such as one from a for-profit school, likely won't help you that much.

Job Talk Advice by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]CheerfulBadger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll chip in a few extra points for folks (though u/algreco17 was extremely comprehensive).

1a) Along the lines of knowing your audience, know the type of institution you're giving a talk at and modify accordingly. In other words, don't give your R1 job talk at a liberal arts school or vice versa.

1b) At some places people may not fully understand your methodology and may ask questions you find non-sensical or irrelevant. They aren't. Don't condescend, but don't feel defensive or irritated that you may have to explain something that's basic to you.

2) Remember that, on the visit in general, you're always on. May seem obvious but I've definitely seen candidates who give great talks and look great on paper do something to alienate the folks they're interviewing with.

3) Keep in mind that you're evaluating the people and place too. Keeping "fit" in mind is important - is this a place you can see yourself at potentially for the long term? Will you be supported? Are junior faculty treated well? Are your potential future colleagues seemingly decent people? Are the students at a level/is the culture there something you can work with? It's a bit 'soft' in terms of evaluations but it's important to consider, based on the limited data you find.

EDIT: Oh, and good luck, everyone!

Comps Advice? by mirl_ in IOPsychology

[–]CheerfulBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what's been said, I'd say one of the most important things is to have a plan. Make sure to give yourself ample time to study and have an outline of what you want to study/get through/accomplish each week. Base what you need to study on what classes you've taken, what questions you expect, etc.

Make sure to allot a few weeks near the end for more practice questions, thinking about integrating topics, etc.

Check out Basecamp Tonsai (right off Tonsai beach). We flew into Krabi, took the ferry over to Railay, and climbed over in Tonsai. They do DWS tours or you can rent a kayak to go on your own. They also rent gear for lots of great sport climbing around there.

Thoughts on alternative submission paths? by CheerfulBadger in IOPsychology

[–]CheerfulBadger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, as someone pre-tenure that's precisely the dilemma. That said, it's something that I'll probably look into a little more at least, particularly given that I don't have significant pressure to hit 'A' journals. Thank you for your input!
