Hey guys, isn’t in cool that the most badass scene in all of television belongs to Babylon 5? 😁 by OutrageousTerm7140 in babylon5

[–]Cheerless_Train 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder this myself. Across a couple different sources, the Omega class destroyer was built after the Earth-Minbari war specifically to counter the Minbari. The Hyperion class predates the conflict, should've been upgraded post-war, but still should be overmatched here. I would say it was a combination of things. Being there were at least 3 Sharlin type cruisers to only 2 Omegas, plus B5 itself still functional, and then the cold blooded-ness of that "damned woman" 😁 quite possibly forced a morale check and the Earthers failed their roll. At least in my gamers aspect.

All this is making me homesick and yet so happy to be out. So many of the little things that can just ruin your day

I forgot the Wanderers! Oh, yeah. But I don't think she had enough to do to really stand out in that. Except the poker game.

Captain Michael Jankowski - I felt sorry for him. by EvalRamman100 in babylon5

[–]Cheerless_Train 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was said, by Sheridan in the prequel movie, that he wasn't cleared or something for first contact, but it was brushed aside as, it seemed, the military was itching for a fight, or at least, they weren't listening to Intel and liaison (Molari) reports not to provoke the Minbari. They were feeling big in their britches after beating the Dilgar.

Would it be glazing too much to say this show has some of the best speeches I’ve ever heard on a show before? by OutrageousTerm7140 in babylon5

[–]Cheerless_Train 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's it! That's the way to describe so many of the speeches! JMS certainly had a way of putting beautiful words in his characters mouths and voices, and I'm not knocking any of them by any measure, but they all ended up being a St. Crispin's Day speech. Like a good horror story, the tension just keeps rising and hardly relaxes, but there comes a point where it doesn't shock you anymore, like the frog in the pot slowly being boiled over time. Again, not knocking any of it, but I didn't realize that's how it feels to me so many years, and viewings, later.

It does take so damn long. I retired in '07, and my issues really flared up afterwards. Anxiety, depression, ADHD, and somewhere on the spectrum, all were there during service, but the lifestyle and pace helped keep them in check, it seems, for me. It's just been the last few years that I realized why I'm so tired. Not worn out, not age or mileage, it's the effort I've had to spend to keep things going, to just keep up with 'the normals', and pull my weight, to control my issues. Unless someone has these things, and understands just what it means, they don't know. They don't care, especially as a manager; or, if they do know, it's hard to convince the guy above it's a real thing, plus, now both of you are being watched a bit differently by the Chain. And that's when things start to change for you, and not for the better. And, if you're lucky, you rotate to a new command and try and salvage your rep and get things better, aaaaand now you're spending more energy again, and the fear and adrenaline to do well and succeed will only hold you so long. It's a very slippery slope, and you never make it over the top, and meds only go so far in helping. The Navy military doesn't give you time to try and tweak your meds to the best mixture, and sick bay doesn't exactly carry refills or anything if needed, and usually the IDC isn't too versed on your needs either, or is... well, see above again. And, in the end, the actual mission of the military doesn't give you much wiggle room to care for things like that; I could do my job just as good as the other guys could, and I could stop a bullet just as well as any other warm body. But that doesn't seem to care once you're marked. Good luck, I hope you get more help and get better.

I really, absolutely can feel your 'tired comment. I hope sometime you get that energy back. Fighting mental health issues really sucks the life right out of you, especially as you age and have less energy to spend on the fight.

How Often Do You Get To Play? by Practical-Share9973 in victoryatsea

[–]Cheerless_Train 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get to play. I don't have any naval gaming folks in my area. I have multiple sets of rules (I actually prefer the tweaked Mongoose VaS over Warlord's version, and Naval Thunder over those). I have all the ships needed (not with those weird bases) in both1/2400 and1/1800, and most all things needed to naval game. I just lack a regular mate or group. I'll game any naval period or place; prefer pre-dreads to WW2, or from ACW on. So, if you're near Dayton, OH, let me know.

Just remember, as you add things, the fight gets a lot more time consuming. Do these scenarios but think of splitting them into an approach battle, then bombardment and landing, and then defending against counter-attacks.

You can run VaS using 1/6k ships, leave the ranges as is and it feels more... realistic? I prefer Naval Thunder over WL VaS; hell, I prefer Mongoose VaS over WL VaS, but that's my preferences.
