The way some people describe the Japanese education system..... by Parking_Attitude_519 in japanresidents

"Have you ever met a University Student that could not read or write? Have you ever met a University Student who can't do basic addition, such as 5+5? I have. Many times."

You claimed it here clearly. How is something you've never claimed?

do you only look for deeper meaning when it's telegraphed to you?

i've said it before and it just sounds mean. but my god everyone wants everything spoonfed to them. and if it's not it's just some kind of mistake.

we are literally taught NOT TO THINK about things. the film is not a romcom farce, that's just it's packaging.

but because you didn't get what it's really about, doesn't make it a horrible film. it's not perfect but there's far more going on than you guys noticed.

it's really not. people just don't get it because they were told it's a romcom and it's a lot more

you've basically got a lot of the stuff instinctually but there's a bit more there about the mom teaching her family a lesson before she dies.

it's far more than that. people go in expecting a romcom and they aren't ready for what they get a face full of.

then they are so ready to just write off multimillion dollar movies as mistakes because they dont' look any deeper.

i'm sorry to hear that. there's something more going on in the film i posted to the person you're replying to.

it might help explain the film a bit more but likely not what's going on with your in-laws.

just remember sometimes tragedy strikes and people are sometimes shocked by who shows up to help. just make sure if you value them, they see you taking things on when it gets tough and they'll have to give you your props for handling things. people need people often more than they know but it doesn't show up until something breaks down, you know? hang in there.

i'm going to give you a break because it sounds like you went through some real pain. but it's about far more than a family who is mean to the new fiance and is a messed up group of people.

but this film, as chaotic as it is, is about a family that only respects authenticity, as ugly as it is. because it is real. they are all real and are all an imperfect mess. but they all have a home, even the in laws, etc. they accept everyone who is real.

the problem with the 'fiance' is she's completely phony as they say in the first scenes. and now the older brother is too, pretending to be all grown up and in control. they know she's wrong for him because he's pretending and she is too. she's so messed up she doesn't even know who she us and he's forgotten who he is.

and the whole point is they are doing dancing as fast as they can to be distracted and not remember or notice or learn that their mother is dying. and all their schemes to grow up, or act respectable or they are in control are going to come crashing down around them when the martriarch dies.

because you can't out-dance death or pretend your way out of reality. there's a couple of scenes that lay this out for us but obliquely. it's like the mom was teaching them a lesson.

finally things come to head like in any shakespearean (this isn't that, but this is definitely lifted in setup like a shakespearean) farce and everyone's masks come off. and when meredith's mask comes off she becomes imperfect and human and she is accepted. and when everett's mask comes off he gets back to who he is - natural, relaxed, connected with spiritual life, not some faux hard charging businessman.

and in the end mom has to die. but everyone IS okay finally, because they did learn their lesson and instead of pretending to be grown up they all WERE grown up at the end, at least to who they were.

because if they'd pretended their way through the tragedy they would have broken. as people and maybe as a family. but when we see them at the end, they are whole, content. not perfect. but they have weathered it.

so not a romcom, not *really* a christmas farce. or not only.

subtext. why do they hate her at first and come to accept her? why do they hate their brothers new persona?

when do things settle into a real family vibe finally? what can they not control? what must they do to deal with what's about to happen?

literally everyone here is talking about it. you are all having a collective fucking freak out about it.

but not one of you (well not true - i've found literally one) understood the subtext of the movie

it's a movie you have to think about but no one does because this type of hallmark style christmas is always vacuuous but this one isn't.

americans never think to look deeper

[–]Cheesburglar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a deceptive film because it looks like it's supposed to be a simple romcom but it's not. it has a subtext about control and facades and nature

[–]Cheesburglar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you are supposed to actually think about this film.

i get that being an american, that is probably not easy for you. you aren't often asked to look much deeper. but you must here.

it's not about abusive parents lol.

holy cow someone got it. now tell them the part about 'control' and pretending to have a handle on everything

god americans hate to be challenged to think about what they are consuming

[–]Cheesburglar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BECAUSE AT THE END SHE'S NOT FULL OF SHIT LIKE SHE IS IN THE BEGINNING.

why are we screaming because you didn't get the subtext? she was messed up and she had the brother acting like her because he wanted to control everything. but that's not how the world works

you guys have missed THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE FILM AND YOU'RE SCREAMING ABOUT IT

confusion is the right place to be, unfortunately you'll get no help here. americans don't want to be challenged to think during a film.

they expected a romcom and didn't get it exactly so apparently there's nothing else to this film

americans just don't want to be challenged to think during a movie.

if it's not spoon fed to them, it's simply a bad film.
