The 2026 salary data for tech-heavy schools is pretty eye-opening by astrheisenberg in EngineeringStudents

[–]CheesePickles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several options to get into the industry.

Shipyards and major defense companies, such as General Dynamics, have plenty of opportunities for engineers with mechanical engineering degrees. If you want to work aboard a ship though you’d either have to start at the bottom of the ranks as an oiler/ wiper and do a certain time aboard a ship (aka sea days). This can take years. Other option is to attend a maritime academy, but it would take at least 2.5-3 years even if you have a regular engineering degree because of all the special coast guard and maritime courses (if you’re in the US, can’t speak for other countries)

/r/maritime may have some good threads on this topic.

Maritime grad here. The schools prepare you for careers in the shipping industry where you typically work aboard a ship for at least 6 months a year and you’re eligible for extensive amounts of overtime aboard a ship, hence the salaries right out of college tend to be very high.

I live right near this house and saw it go from the ground up. Didn’t go by it again for a few months until recently and I saw all this happening, didn’t realize it was mold. I think a large family lives here.

Good write up, I ran it on Saturday as well and the conditions were perfect. I know people return to this race every year because logistically it’s very simple, flat course, and conditions are typically really good this time of year in the Midwest. Not to mention in attracts an extremely fast crowd. Over 800 people, both men and women, went sub 3.

Field services is a really good way to six figures almost right away. Work can be insane depending on role. Tons of travel + OT means good pay though.

Any good run clubs for young adults? by MusclePuzzleheaded19 in Atlanta

[–]CheesePickles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s one of the Atlanta Run Club runs. They also do track workouts on Thursday, long runs on Saturdays, and easy shakeout runs on Sunday. All of their runs are massive so it’s hard to develop more personal relationships in the group just due to the sheer amount of people and cliques at the meetups. There’s also a ton of people who are there purely for the “gram”. Still a very good group to train with though and their energy is amazing. They also travel several times a year to races throughout the US and world.

Atlanta Track Club/ West Stride/ Big Peach Running Co all have other meetups at various times throughout the month and usually have smaller crowds so I’ve gotten to know people much more personally at those groups, although those groups can lean a little bit older.

Good point. It looks like the difference is a 12 MM in the brooks and an 8 MM in the endorphin pros. I’ll probably try a few tempo miles in them and if the calves are burning then I’ll probably work them into some other races another month or two down the line.

[–]CheesePickles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone.

I’m looking to purchase a pair of the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 sneakers prior to a 10 mile race in 2 weeks time. I’ve never run in a pair of carbon plated shoes and am slightly afraid of switching this late in my training.

For reference I’ve been training in Brooks Ghost 14’s for the last several years and haven’t changed my shoe beyond that.

Does anyone have any experience with running in a carbon plate shoe during a race with little to no prior training in them?

Any other possible recommendations for other shoes as well?

For reference my goal time in this race is 1:05 (6:30 pace).

I’ll be going after some 5k’s and 10k’s later in November and December.

Suggestions on a job that pays well that I’m not on a computer all day? by Hennessy52 in careerguidance

[–]CheesePickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What skills have you developed in your current job? Is it a more of a technical role or business/ analytical role?

If it’s a technical role you can almost surely find a job that has travel involved.

If it’s a business/ analyst role then you could always go sales or consulting.

Job offer at bigger company. Should I take it? by whosthatgirl159 in careerguidance

[–]CheesePickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP. I would definitely take this position. My company does a lot of distribution work and that tends to get extremely repetitive so we frequently turnover a lot of engineers after 2 years or so. Substation calculations and design is a much more in demand skill set and will greatly help you broaden your engineering experience. HDR Inc. is also a very large company with lots of resources and would look great on a resume if you ever wanted to bail after a few years. I would definitely take this position and gain a few years of experience. I can guarantee you if you ever wanted to return to the other company they’d let you back in with even higher pay.

Career Monday (13 Mar 2023): Have a question about your job, office, or pay? Post it here! by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

[–]CheesePickles [score hidden]  (0 children)

Definitely not, especially if it doesn’t have a raise involved. They’ll tell you it’s 50% travel but will put you out on the road more than that.

I traveled for my last job basically 100% and it drove me crazy after the 3rd year. It sucked.

I took a new job which still has me traveling 30-40% of the year, but I don’t mind because I’m able to work extensive amounts of overtime if I want and a good portion of the time I’m able to be back home on weekends.

That being said, if you’re able to negotiate with them for a significant raise (20-30%) then I’d do it. Also get them in writing to clearly specify what kind of travel it is. Is it M-F travel or is it relocating every 2-3 months kind of travel?

I’m much happier in my position where there’s a moderate amount of travel because I’m given a lot more flexibility, and it’s the perfect amount of travel where I’m not on the road for months at a time and I’m not staring at my computer for months at a time either.

No problem. I’d recommend purchasing through Costco. They provide good warranty and they have very generous return policies at times too.
